Scholarships
There are many scholarships available to you to help cover the financial costs of your post secondary education. Scholarships are awarded to students for a variety of reasons: academic achievement, community involvement, program area, and athletics. It is up to you to research the many available scholarships and to ensure that you will meet all of the scholarships requirements before applying. Read the six steps below to help you apply for scholarships.
Step 1 – Research

  • Visit the post secondary school website you are planning to apply to for entrance scholarships

  • Make use of Internet resources such as: www.schaolrshipscanada.com, www.studentawards.com, www.canlearn.ca, www.electronicinfo.ca, www.ontariocolleges.ca, and www.osca.ca

  • Talk to your parents and/or relatives – ask if their workplace or an organization they belong to offers scholarships and financial awards to family members.

  • Listen to the morning announcements for any post secondary scholarship announcements

  • Speak with your guidance counsellor

Step 2 - Completing the Application

  • Complete the appropriate scholarship application form well in advance of the scholarship deadline. Make sure you keep a copy for your own records.

  • Ensure all sections are accurately completed.

Step 3 – Gathering Additional Documentation

When applying for scholarships, you might be required to send in supplementary documents with your application. Here are several things to consider:

  • If you need a letter of recommendation, ensure you are asking someone who has a good relationship with you, has known you for at least the specified amount of time as requested, and will be able to provide a good character reference relevant for the scholarship you are applying for. Make sure you give at least a week’s notice.

  • Ask your counsellor or guidance secretary for a certified copy of your transcript. Make sure you ask at least a week in advance.

  • Keep extra letters of recommendation and transcripts on hand (it will save you time when applying for more than one award.

  • Ensure you all supplementary documents (reference letters, transcripts, essays, etc.) are completed and sent with your scholarship application.

Step 4 - The Essay

  • Read the instructions carefully. You might want to seek advice from a family member, friend, teacher or counsellor.

  • Give yourself plenty of time.

  • Plan – jot down the points down that you want to include. Make sure they are relevant.

  • Go for quality, rather than quantity.

  • Use clear and concise language and avoid the use of slang.

  • Ensure your essay is grammatically correct and that it meets the essay’s guidelines.

  • Review your essay. Read it aloud. Refine it.

  • Proofread. Have someone read and proofread your essay.

  • Keep a copy on file in case you might be able to use it for another scholarship

Step 5 - Sending in your Application

  • Mail your application before the deadline as a late application may not be accepted. I suggest you use a courier service where you can track your package to ensure that it has been delivered and received.

  • Print off the confirmation of receipt

  • You might want to contact the scholarship office to confirm that it has received your scholarship application package

Step 6 - Receiving the money

  • Make sure you meet all the conditions to receive the money: full-time enrollment, maintaining residency, institution you are attending, etc.

  • If you move, advise the scholarship donor of your new address.

  • If you are required to attend an awards ceremony, luncheon, etc., be there, be gracious and dress appropriately.

  • Thank the donor, when appropriate.
