Assignment: Choosing one of the prompts below (done in class), your assignment is to write a five paragraphessay based on The Catcher in the Rye . Your essay will follow the specified essay format with an introduction, thesis, topic sentences, cited evidence, and a concluding paragraph. Throughout your essay, you will also want to be sure that you have provided your readers with enough context about the novel so they can understand your essay. Do not assume that the reader has read the novel, but do not feel that you need to summarize the story in its entirety in order to support your thesis. The only source you will use for this essay will be the novel, The Catcher in the Rye. Please do not use any outside sources.

Requirements:



  • Five Typed Paragraphs (Unless prior arrangements have been made)

  • MLA Format (to be discussed in class)

  • Maximum Two Quotes per paragraph

  • Separate work’s cited page (should ONLY consist of The Catcher in the Rye)

The Catcher in the Rye Essay Topics
1. In a well-written essay, determine what is wrong with Holden by analyzing Holden’s behavior and relationships among his peers at school and family at home. Is Holden an insane person in a sane world, or is he a sane person in an insane world? What are the criteria for insanity or sanity? How does Holden’s world and Holden fit into your examination of what is sane or insane?

2. Does Holden truly understand who he is? According to Holden, he is not a phony, he is a pacifist, and he would make a good “catcher” for children. Write an essay examining how Holden characterizes himself. Explain whether or not you believe he is fully honest with himself and others.


4. In a literary work, a minor character may possess traits that emphasize the distinctive characteristics and qualities of the main character. Write an essay analyzing how the relationship between various minor characters and Holden illuminates the meaning of the work.
5. Write an essay in which you explain what Holden is searching for or struggle with throughout the novel. Assess to what extent it succeeds and analyze how it contributes to the meaning of the work as a whole. Explain why or why not his efforts have paid off.
6. In The Catcher in the Rye, J.D. Salinger uses many symbols (a concrete object that represents an abstract idea) to support the thematic idea that maturation and the loss of innocence are an inevitable rite of passage for all of humanity. Prove this thematic statement using three different symbols of your choosing. Discuss each symbol’s meaning and how it connects and aides the development of Salinger’s message.
