“The Veldt” & “August 2026: There Will Come Soft Rains”



Context:

In “The Veldt” and “August 2026: There Will Come Soft Rains,” written in the 1950’s when technology was just emerging, Ray Bradbury uses such literary devices to convey the central ideas that technology has the ability to sever human relationships, consume us, and destroy our humanity by its indifference. One main objective of Bradbury’s seems to have been to exploit human fears and anxieties in an effort to force society to consider the harmful potential of technology.



Task:

Choose two literary devices used in BOTH Bradbury pieces and explore how he employs each device.



  • You will need four paragraphs in total: introduction, two body paragraphs (TEDEDEAC) and a conclusion.

  • Feel free to utilize the language of the above context paragraph to develop a hook, lead and thesis.

  • When writing your essay, you may use your completed outline and your Double-Bubble Map only. You will NOT be able to access the texts while writing the essay.

  • You will have one block period to write your essay.

  • Organize the essay by writing:

    1. Introduction (Hook, Lead, Thesis)

    2. Compare Bradbury’s use of Literary Device #1 (TEDEDEAC)

    3. Contrast Bradbury’s use of Literary Device #2 (TEDEDEAC)

    4. Conclusion (Thesis, Lead, Leave the reader thinking about why and how this topic should matter to them.)
