Strong and resilient communities – services and assistance that: help homeless people and low-income households to gain affordable and appropriate housing; promote community partnerships; and encourage participation in the local community by individuals, families, business and government.
Outcome 4 reflects the government’s commitment to building the capabilities of communities and providing affordable housing. In contributing to the fulfilment of these commitments the department will:
work together in partnership with service providers and local communities to better deliver, integrate and coordinate FaCSIA's programmes to meet local needs;
providing support services to people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.
Supporting Financial Management (Output Group 4.2) will contribute by:
supporting community agencies to assist people who are in financial crisis through the provision of emergency relief and financial counselling services;
fostering the improved use and management of money through community‑based family income management projects and financial counselling services; and
undertaking research to inform policies to reduce problem gambling, particularly those policies which advance the objectives of the National Framework on Problem Gambling 2004-2008.
Community Recovery (Output Group 4.3) will contribute by:
developing a range of measures to assist communities in crisis, including as a result of natural or man‑made disasters;
providing financial assistance and personal support to those affected by natural and man‑made disasters, where appropriate; and
encouraging whole-of-government approaches to community recovery from disasters through the Australian Government Disaster Recovery Committee, chaired by FaCSIA.
Community Partnerships and Delivery (Output Group 4.4) will contribute by:
funding programmes and activities and providing grants to develop community capacity to identify and resolve local issues, explore opportunities, and build greater economic self-reliance, strength and resilience in areas of greatest need;
assisting people to become involved in their community through supporting volunteering and providing training to build community leadership and initiative;
working with service providers and communities to develop integrated and coordinated programmes and services that meet local needs;
funding programmes and activities that facilitate partnerships between business, community groups and government to address community issues; and
providing support to the Prime Minister's Community Business Partnership and implementing its agreed recommendations.
