1 Welcome & Apologies: CW thanked the attendees, and apologies for absence were noted.
2 Minutes of Last Meeting: These were approved and signed as a true record.
3 Matters Arising:
Advertising revenues run a month in arrears, but VM & DJ have now caught up with all outstanding amounts. New advertisers are coming in and existing ones are renewing, so all seems OK at the moment. The current advertising spreadsheet may need to be replaced with a software package.
The Valentine’s Dance with Curry Supper on 15th Feb was cancelled due to low ticket sales.
Jacob Williams is working on an advertising sandwich board for the Old School Coffee Mornings.
4 Treasurer’s Report:
DJ gave brief details of income and outgoings - subscriptions received from October onwards are almost 68%, and current and deposit bank balances remain healthy, despite the low interest rates on the deposit accounts. Some affiliated groups have not yet paid their £10 fees for 2013-14.
Advertising revenue is now on track.
5 Festival, Events & Old School Update:
The 2014 Lisvane Festival will again be in the middle two weeks of June, with dates planned so far as follows: Sun 8th - Fun Run & BBQ, Mon 9th (or 16th?) – Bridge Night, Thu 12th – Village Lunch, then Griffin Fun Quiz & Curry, Sat 14th – Fete, Art Show and PTFA Dance, Sun 15th - Panthers Fun Day and Presentations, Tue 17th – WI Coffee Morning, Thu 19th – Musical Afternoon Tea, Fri 20th - Lisvane Players, Sat 21st- Family Disco, Sun 22nd - Big Lunch Picnic.
All dates for the Festival will be published and updated over the next few months, including confirmation of a Concert by the Llysfaen Singers to be arranged for either Wed 13th or Wed 20th.
Grant Funding for the Festival will no longer be available from Cardiff County Council.
The Old School Coffee Mornings have been running each Wednesday for almost a year, they provide a valuable social occasion for the community, and have been described as ‘brilliant’. They raise an average of £80 per week, and the Old School Fund now stands at around £12k.
6 Affiliated Groups Updates: Reports were provided by the following groups:
Lisvane Gardening Club (BG): There was a good turnout for the February meeting, the speaker having previously helped organise the Royal Tournament. The next meeting will be the annual Bulb Competition, which should provide a good display of Jan Bos hyacinths. The Gardening Club is also now contributing topical gardening tips to the Lisvane Village Facebook page.
Friends of Coed-y-Felin (TC): Woodland management continues, the main pond has been cleared of overgrown plants, and the Old Mill pond is to be planted with native bog plants. Work will continue for some months on the living hedge at the Ridgeway entrance, and grants will be sought when the work for the coming year has been planned.
Friends of Parc Cefn Onn (TC): The entrance upgrade is almost finished, the underpass lighting is now installed, the new handrail after the underpass is complete, as is the refurbishment of the toilet and office. The new Bat Boxes are to be installed on March 16th, rescheduled from February as the Rangers had to focus on dealing with fallen trees due to the high winds.
50+ Club (TC): The speaker at the February meeting was Val Cousins, director of a charity which takes volunteers to Belarus to help in an orphanage and hospital for disabled children. The volunteers are usually local children with behavioural problems, but seeing the conditions in Belarus is often a life-changing experience which helps them to appreciate how lucky they really are. For further details, check the website for ‘Leaves of Hope for Belarusian Children’.
Llanishen Rotary (DJ): St John’s School recently won the annual ‘Youthspeak’ competition which involved some excellent speakers. An essay and speaking competition for Year 6 pupils (up to 11 years) attracted excellent speakers from seven schools and essays from about 450 schools, with over 100 attendees at the final in the Thornhill Community Hall. The Christmas lights switch-on in Llanishen village was attended by over 1000 people, so a PA system will be used next time.
Scout Group (HA): Several new boys have joined the Beavers, with 3 girls now in Cubs and 5 in Scouts. Summer activities are being planned, and the 2015 World Scout Jamboree in Japan is to be attended by two local representatives – Joe Fletcher from Lakeside as part of the Welsh contingent, and Joe Malloy from Lisvane as a member of the International Service Team.
Historical Society (GL): The monthly LHS talks will soon end for the summer, but the Society are aiming to film a number of local residents as part of a living archive. If you wish to participate, or to nominate a suitable candidate, then please contact Gill Lawson.
Lisvane Panthers (GM): Discussions on the proposed development of Heol-y-Delyn playing field are still continuing, despite meetings being cancelled by Cardiff Council Parks Department. Many football fixtures have been affected by the recent bad weather.
7_ Grant Applications:
Joe Malloy has requested funding towards his trip to the World Scout Jamboree, and a request is also in the pipeline from Joe Fletcher. Both applications will be considered together at a future meeting.
The Memorial Hall roof needs repairs costing approx £30k, and the LCA are to consider making a grant after the Hall Trustees have firstly approached Cardiff County Council – Grants for Community Halls, and the Welsh Heritage Lottery Fund.
8_ Any Other Business & Date of Next Meeting(s):
A celebration will be planned for the LCA 50th Anniversary on 12th October 2016.
Llysfaen Singers are to hold an Easter Concert at Lisvane School on Wed 2nd April, tickets £5.00.
There has been no further update on the Churchlands planning application for over 1200 dwellings.
The funeral of Kieron Malloy took place recently. The LCA wish to offer condolences to his family, and to record thanks for Kieron’s support to the Community as a Trustee of the Memorial Hall.
Pat Howe recently passed away after a short stay at Holme Towers, with the funeral taking place on Wed 19th Feb at Thornhill Wenallt Chapel. Pat was much involved in Lisvane life and organisations, particularly in the administration and running of the Cabin Library. The LCA wish to offer condolences to her family, and to record thanks for all of Pat’s involvement over the years.
A large collection of Lisvane Newsletters and Links has been donated to the Historical Society, but the Glamorgan Archive and Cardiff Library are unable to act as a repository. Sending them to the National Library of Wales in Aberystwyth would make them too inaccessible, so alternative local storage is to be considered after the documents have firstly been scanned.
Further LCA meetings for 2014 will all commence at 7:00pm as follows:
Committee Meetings (Sundays): Apr 13th, May 18th, Jun 29th, Sep 7th, Dec 7th.
AGM: Wed Oct 15th. CW declared the meeting closed at 8:05 pm.
