The Grade 9 Breaking Barriers Essay Contest is a chance for students to share their personal stories and show how they have used Jackie Robinson’s values to face their own barriers. Entries for this year’s contest are due February 21, 2012, and students have the option to enter by mail or online.

*The Grand Prize includes:

A trip to a game of the 2012 Major League Baseball® World Series®

AND

One laptop computer for the winning student



AND

One laptop computer for the student’s designated 9th-grade teacher



AND

Class visit from Sharon Robinson, daughter of Jackie Robinson



AND

One class set of Promises to Keep books



AND

One class set of Breaking Barriers T-Shirts



All students must write the essay according to the instructions and rubric provided; however, submission to the contest is optional and only permitted with parent/guardian signature.

Rubric

Scholastic (and I) will evaluated essays on the following criteria:



Length: 500—1,200 words _____/10

Grammar, usage, mechanics, spelling _____/10

How well the essay expresses the student's barrier _____/20


How well the essay expresses how one or more of the values-courage, determination, teamwork, persistence, integrity, citizenship, justice, commitment, and excellence-is/are used to face and/or overcome the barrier _____/20
How well the essay is organized _____/20
How effective the essay expresses the writer's point of view

All essays must be factual and based on the student's real-life experience. Fictional stories will be disqualified from the contest.


Prizes:Grand Prize: One (1) Grand Prize will be awarded from all eligible entries. Grand Prize student winner will receive a 3-day/2-night trip for 2 (for Grand Prize student winner and his/her parent or legal guardian) to a game of the 2012 World Series, selected by BOC in its sole discretion. The Grand Prize package includes the following: 2 round-trip airfare tickets to an airport near the World Series location (estimated retail value: $800.00) or ground transport based on home location of Grand Prize student winner; 2 game tickets to a 2012 World Series Game (estimated retail value: $800.00); 2 nights of hotel accommodations (estimated retail value: $600.00); Ground transport to and from airport, if needed (estimated retail value: $300.00); Ground transport to and from the game (estimated retail value: $300.00); Meal stipend (estimated retail value: $300.00). In addition, Grand Prize student winner will receive a laptop computer (minimum estimated retail value: $1,200.00). One (1) Grand Prize 9th-grade teacher (as designated by the student on his/her entry form) and classroom winners (i.e., the teacher and classmates of the Grand Prize-winning student) will receive a class visit from Sharon Robinson, daughter of Jackie Robinson (estimated retail value: $1,500.00); one class set (30 books) of autographed copies of Promises to Keep by Sharon Robinson (estimated retail value: $510.00); and one class set (30 T-shirts) of Breaking Barriers T-shirts (estimated retail value: $450.00). In addition, the designated teacher of the Grand Prize-winning student will receive a laptop computer (minimum estimated retail value: $1,200.00).
