Essay Topic
The story of the swan is the ultimate symbol of the American Dream in the novel. The mothers want their daughters to have all the privileges they could not, but are disappointed that this in turn means their daughters will not truly understand them. 
Possible Themes: American Dream, Overcoming Obstacles, Assimilation & Immigrant Identity, The Challenges of Cultural Translation
Possible Symbols: Jing-mei’s pendant, Lena’s black vase, Lindo’s red candle, swan/swan feather, The Joy Luck Club, The Twenty-Six Malignant Gates book
Directions:  Explain a symbol that reflects a theme from The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tam.  Analyze how that same theme is prevalent in the story “Liberty” by Julia Alvarez, the article “Immigration and Citizenship-The ‘Anchor Baby’ Debate” by Barbara Sheehan, OR “The Turtle” excerpt from The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck.
