The summative portion of your mark (30%) is as follows:

Research Essay - 15%

Presentation - 5%

Exam - 10%


Choose a General Topic

Choose an Ancient Civilization

  • The Islamic Middle East

  • African Kingdoms

  • India

  • China

  • Japan

  • The Maya

  • The Aztecs

  • The Inca

  • The Byzantine Empire

  • The Mongol Empire

  • The Persian Empire

  • Another approved civilization




Choose a Topic Area

  • Government and Law

  • Individual rights and social structures - e.g. slaves, women, nobility, merchants

  • Economic Structures and Trade

  • Knowledge – philosophy, medicine, science

  • Arts – literature, sculpture, painting, architecture etc.

  • Religion

  • Military traditions

  • Another approved topic


Develop a Research Question and Subtopics – Due by May 4th

  • You will need to narrow your research within the broad topic area

  • You must develop a research question –

e.g. What was the status of women in Incan society?

What developments occurred in art and philosophy?




  • Develop some areas or subtopics that you will need to research to be able to fully answer your research question

    • e.g. marriage laws, rights to children, tasks, famous women, etc.

    • can be in mind map form – Google wonder wheel may be useful


Do Your Research

  • You must consult a minimum of 3-5 sources, including at least one primary source.

  • You must take notes in appropriate format, using noodle tools or note-taking sheets

  • In any case, you must

    1. Note the source in MLA format

    2. track page numbers

    3. include analysis (how does this answer your research question?)

Develop Your Thesis

  • Your Thesis is your argument that you will prove using the evidence that you have found and researched

  • It should answer your research question

    • Weak thesis – The pyramids of Egypt took many people to build

    • Strong thesis – Building the pyramids of Egypt would have been impossible without the slave labour made available through military and political conquests.


Submit the Draft Outline – Due Wednesday, May 18th

Your draft outline must include the following process work:



  • Research question and subtopics (original and revised)

  • All research notes (3-5 sources/pages)

  • Draft thesis and proposed paragraph topics (around 4 )


Write the Research Essay – Due Tuesday, June 7th

  • Essay must be word-processed, double-spaced 1000 - 1300 words

  • Include citations and works cited in proper MLA format

  • You will have Monday, June 6th in the lab to begin


PLAGIARISM will result in a zero being assigned to your essay. You will be required to re-do the essay on a topic of MY choosing and you will be required to write in class under my supervision outside of class time. Failure to complete the summative project can result in failure of the course.
Create the Group Presentation – June 13-15 (Monday - Wednesday)

You will, with the other students who have researche your civilization, present it to the class. This should be a power point (or similar) presentation. You will have June 7-10 in the lab to work on this.


You will need to cover the following topics:

  • Timeline overview

  • Geographic overview

  • Political overview

  • Present your own topics

    • Thesis and evidence overview (in 2-3 slides each)

  • Legacy of this civilization for the modern era

  • You may bring in appropriate food, costumes or props to illustrate your civilization more fully.
