Question 1 (1/3). Answer 1a and 1b.

1a The following text contains 10 errors of grammar. Correct them and explain your corrections with reference to rules of grammar and/or contextual clues.
1 Rescue archaeology in Scotland

2 The Scottish history is being lost irretrievably and with a critical rate beneath the

3 earthmovers and cement beds of redevelopment. That fact has emerged from meetings

4 at Perth and St Andrews during the past few days.

5 More than seventy historic Scottish towns are being thought to be threatened,

6 with Perth and St Andrews among the most important ones. In the countryside

7 thousands of sites, from the earliest prehistoric middens to the remains of the last

8 century, have laid unexplored.

9 Before the seventeenth century was documentary evidence about Scottish

10 communities sparse. The country had not the same conscientious habit with to record

11 its history as medieval England.

12 In St Andrews, where little has changed during the past 300 years,

13 archaeologists detect sinister signs. ‘The town centre is a conservation area, but it is

14 calculated that in the past decade one tenth of the medieval borough has been

15 destroyed by piecemeal development. All hope of recovering informations have been

16 lost’, says one archaeologist and adds: ‘As long as change was leisurely, Scotland’s

17 archaeology was secure. That is no longer the case; so we should sounded the alarm a

18 long time ago.’

1b The examples below contain language choices that may not be definitely wrong, but they are awkward and unidiomatic. Suggest ways of revising and improving them. Explain what you have done and why.

Describe briefly the similarities and differences between the two texts as regards field,

tenor, mode and purpose. Then show how such differences are reflected in lexical and grammatical choices, making explicit comparisons between the two texts.

0 The hot air in EU ‘traveling circus’

1 The monthly pilgrimage of the European Parliament from its headquarters in Brussels

2 to its second seat in Strasbourg is producing 20,000 tons of carbon dioxide a year,

3 equivalent to the greenhouse gases produced by 13,000 round-trip flights from London

4 to New York, according to a study due for release Wednesday.

5 The study, commissioned by the Parliament’s Green group, shows that the

6 commute to the legislature’s monthly plenary session in Strasbourg – involving 3,000

7 staff members, officials, lobbyists and journalists, as well as 15 truckloads of

8 documents – produces emissions equivalent to the carbon dioxide produced annually

9 by 4,000 London households, or by the entire population of the Turks and Caicos

10 Islands in the West Indies.

11 The report comes just weeks after the European Union committed itself to cut

12 greenhouse gas emissions by 20 percent by the year 2020.

13 It will undermine the EU’s efforts to take the moral high ground on climate

14 change at a time when leading environmental officials have been pressing EU citizens

15 to avoid unnecessary car travel to help reduce production of greenhouse gases. Road

16 transport accounts for about one-fifth of the EU’s total carbon dioxide emissions.

17 The report, conducted by Professor J.W. of the University of York, will also

18 embolden already growing opposition to the Parliament’s double location in Brussels

19 and Strasbourg, which costs EU taxpayers $270 million a year and has become

20 a symbol of the Union’s waste and profligacy.

1 People have found a number of ways to make writing easier. This guide will teach you

2 some of those ways. So have a look at these suggestions.

3 Builders have blueprints. Cooks have recipes. Shoppers have shopping lists.

4 Teams have plays. Things go better if you think about them first. It’s the same with

5 writing. The more you plan, the less time you waste, and the fewer mistakes you

6 make. Writing without a plan is like travelling without a map. Always write down

7 your plan. Whatever form it takes – list, outline, anything – get it onto paper. Three

8 questions will help you make your plan:

9 Why are you writing?

10 What are you writing about?

11 How will you get from beginning to end?

12 Writing always has a purpose. Suppose you want to write to your friend Pat about the

13 latest news of events at school. Then you want to inform and amuse her, perhaps even

14 shock her. You need to list the things that have happened. And perhaps it involves a

15 story about what some people that Pat knows did.

16 A last word about plans. They tell you what you will need. A plan for a

17 bookshelf says how much lumber to buy. A plan for writing says how much

18 information you’ll have to put in. You don’t want to bore Pat with too much

19 information, do you?

20 Now you’ve got a plan. It’s writing time and you’re ready to roll.

Question 3 (1/3). Write an essay of about 500 words on ONE of the following topics.
1. Does religion have a role in public life? Discuss.

2. The gender gap.

Read the extract below, adapted from The Guardian, and then give your opinion.

The term ‘gender gap’ has existed in the United States for 25 years. It refers to the relative strength of the Democrats, the force of the centre Left, among women, and the comparative dominance of the Republicans, the standard-bearers of the centre Right, among male voters. And the tendency of voters in France, Germany and Italy has also been for women to lean to the left, men towards the right. The broader pattern in the democratic world has been similar. Why do you think this is the case?
3. Cars and transport.

The first car appeared on British roads in 1888. By the year 2019 there may be as many as 29 million vehicles on British roads.

Alternative forms of transport should be encouraged and international laws introduced to control car ownership and use.

What are your views? Use your own ideas, knowledge and experience, and support your arguments with examples.
