Sinclair CC “STARS” Scholarships System

Amount: Varies from $200 to $2,250

Requirements: Student must have applied and will be attending Sinclair Community College. You must have a SCC email address and SCC student ID number. You should complete your FAFSA since some scholarships are based on financial need.. There are specific guidelines for each scholarship listed including a GPA of at least 2.0 or 2.5

Navy ROTC Scholarship

Amount: Full tuition and other financial benefits worth up to $180,000.

Requirements: Must a US citizen, between the age of 17 (9/1/11) and 23 years old, Completed high school and have taken an ACT (scores of math- 21; English – 22) or ACT (math – 520; English – 530) or be in the top 10% of class.

Ohio State Voucher Program (Foster Children)

Amount: Up to $5,000 per year for education related costs.

Requirements: You must be a current or former foster student who: was in foster care on your 18th birthday and aged out at that time OR was adopted from foster care with the adoption finalized AFTER your 16th birthday OR will have your foster care case closed between the ages of 18 and 21. You must be a U.S. citizen or qualified non-citizen. You must have been accepted into or be enrolled in a degree, certificate or other accredited program at a college, university, technical, vocational school. Other requirements listed at web site.

Nuts, Bolts and Thingamajigs Scholarships

Amount: Up to $1,500 (requires membership in FMA, TPA, or OPC)

Deadline: April 1, 2012

Requirements: Open to high school seniors who plan to attend a two year career or trade school. Student must have a 2.5 GPA and enrolled in a trade/technical program focused on engineering or manufacturing-related course of study. Members of FMA, TPA or OPC are eligible for up to $2,000 scholarship and must be members in FAM, TPA or OPC.

National DAR Scholarship - American Indian Scholarship

Requirements: Applicants must be Native Americans and proof of American Indian blood is required by letter or proof papers. Students must demonstrate financial need, academic achievement, and have a 3.0 GPA or higher. A recipient may reapply for this scholarship and be considered along with other members of the applicant pool.

OACCS Legislative Scholarship Program

Amount: Varies (250 scholarships)

Deadline: April 2, 2011

Requirements: All high school seniors are eligible if they have GPA of “C“ or better; must be able to pass the school’s entrance exam and be an OH resident. Student must be nominated by a current member of the OH Legislature. Go to http://www.ohiocareercolleges.org/Scholarships.html to print the application, list of schools offering scholarships and the legislative nomination form. Complete the legislative nomination form and send it to your OH representative or your OH Senator. Additional details are in the in the folder labeled the “Legislative Scholarship file” in the April section of scholarship file. The completed application needs to be submitted with an official transcript, two letters of recommendations from teachers, counselors, employers or others; and a written statement of approximately 250 words explaining why you want a career in the field you have listed on the application and why you will be successful.

The Cecil Huston Farm Bureau Scholarship (Greene County)

Requirements: Must be a graduating senior who plans to pursue an Ag related education in a 2-4 year program. College students who are continuing their education may apply for the Cecil Huston Farm Bureau $500.00 Scholarship (up to a maximum of 4 years). S.A.M.E - Major General Frank Barnes Scholarship

Amount: $1,500 (minimum)

Requirements: This scholarship is designed to aid students entering a full-time baccalaureate degree in the areas of science, engineering, or architecture. Applicant must rank in the upper 25% of his or her high school class or have maintained a minimum GPA of 3.2.

Amount: $1,500 (maximum)

Requirements: This scholarship is for students with at least one year of work experience who are returning to school to pursue an advanced degree or make a career change. Applicants can be in an undergraduate or graduate program in the areas of science, engineering, architecture, business administration, management or the teaching of science and math.

Women’s Alliance Inc., Scholarship

Award: $1,000 stipend plus $800 for textbook per year (renewable for 4 years)

Deadline: April 2, 2012

Requirements: Must be a senior minority female who will be attending college in the fall. Must have a minimum GPA of 2.5 and must write an essay as to why she should be considered for this scholarship.

The William Squires Educational Foundation Scholarships

Amount: $3,000 per calendar year; renewable up to 3 additional years ($12,000)

Deadline: April 5, 2012 (postmarked)

Requirements: Student must be an Ohio senior who demonstrates financial need (an EFC of under $7,999), highly motivated with a specific career goal. Student must have a minimum GPA of 3.2 with good character and academic promise. Applicant must be planning to attend an accredited post-secondary educational institution on a full-time basis by the end of 2012.  The school of choice does not need to be in Ohio but must have a program leading to a degree in the student's chosen field.

American Fire Sprinkler Association Scholarship

Award: $2,000

Deadline: April 5, 2012

Requirements: Open to high school seniors who will be attending a 2 or 4 year school beginning no later than fall 2012.

Read the "Fire Sprinkler Essay" (http://www.afsascholarship.org/afsaessay.pdf) about automatic fire sprinklers. Take a ten-question multiple-choice test. This is an open-book test and you may print the essay beforehand for reference during testing. For each question answered correctly, students will receive one (1) entry into a drawing for one of ten $2,000 scholarships. For each question answered incorrectly, you will be given one more chance at the end of the exam to answer those questions correctly. A total of ten (10) entries into the drawing is possible if the student answers all ten questions correctly.

Evalee C. Schwarz Charitable Trust for Education (Interest-free loans)

Amount: $5,000 to $15,000, with a $50,000 lifetime cap per student (multiple awards).

Requirements: The Evalee C. Schwarz Charitable Trust for Education provides interest-free loans to undergraduate and postgraduate students who demonstrate exceptional academic performance and financial need. You must be a U.S. citizen, have an Expected Family Contribution (EFC) of $5,325.00 or less as it appears on their FAFSA Student Aid Report (SAR), and attend school in the state in which you reside. You must also have an outstanding combination of standardized test scores (ranking in the top 10% of scores nationally) and grades. Law students or pre-law students are not eligible to apply. Greene County College Success Partnership Scholarships

General Requirements: A high school senior living in Greene County who has met with a college access advisor (Linda Tortorici). Requirements: Open to high school seniors planning on attending an accredited college or university. Student must have a minimum GPA of 3.5 or rank in the upper 10% of the class and have submitted an application to the college(s) of his/her choice. Special consideration will be given to descendants of SW OH Chapter of The Distinguished Flying Cross Society. You must write a 500 word essay on “What It Means to be an American”.

Requirements: Student must be a senior with at least a 2.5 GPA. Applicant does not have to be a blood donor, but blood donor applicants, or applicants that recruit volunteer blood donors to one of CBC’s fixed donor sites or community mobiles, will be given special consideration. Write an essay about your ideas for a Donor Recruitment Campaign! “As a blood drive chairperson your goal is to encourage fellow students to donate blood and/or volunteer at your high school blood drive.” Create a campaign described in 300 to 500 words, and include at least 3 support materials. UCB Family Epilepsy Scholarship Program

Requirements: Open to seniors graduating in 2012 who are US citizen living with epilepsy or a family member/caregiver of a person living with epilepsy who is seeking an undergraduate or graduate degree in the fall of 2012. Requirements: This is open to students who are a member of an Ohio-based credit union and is currently attending or aspiring to attend a university or college in the 2012-13 academic year. Create a 1- to 2.5-minute video “advertisement” answering the question, “How financially savvy are you?” In your video spotlight one or more of the following money management techniques: thrift/savings, savvy spending, and wise use of credit. After posting annual losses in the hundreds of millions for the past three years, the last of the major legacy airlines filed for bankruptcy November 29, 2011. AMR, parent to American Airlines, filed for Chapter 11 in an effort to rid itself of heavy debt and become a better competitor in the airline industry. In addition to filing for bankruptcy, the company announced spending cuts and entered into talks with its unions to decrease labor costs, alarming passengers and workers alike.



  1. What is the potential impact of this bankruptcy on workers and passengers? How have employees of other large airlines been affected by bankruptcy?

  2. What are the potential effects on the airline industry? On the U.S. economy? What restrictions are in place to limit the use of Chapter 11 as a solution for poor management?
