Data Base Management I developed two databases for the East Carolina University School of Medicine. The largest was a student information system containing data obtained from the students enrolled since the first graduating class was admitted in 1977. The data base contained information obtained during the application process such as undergraduate grade point averages, information about academic performance in medical school such as grades and standardized test scores, and information about future practice plans and personality characteristics obtained during yearly orientations. I analyzed data in this database to prepare annual reports and perform special studies for members of the faculty and staff, primarily the Offices of Admissions and Student Affairs. This database was replaced by a larger database developed by the Office of Informatics in 1990.
The second database contained information from applicants who took the pretest required for admission to training courses sponsored by the Division of Emergency Medical Services of the Department of Emergency Medicine. These courses led to certification as an Emergency Medical Technician‑ Intermediate. In addition to pretest scores, the database contained demographic information, scores on other tests administered during the training course, and the results of the certification examination administered by the North Carolina Office of Emergency Medical Services. This was primarily a research database, and I performed statistical analyses to answer specific questions about the training program.
My involvement with both these databases included participation in the determination of the information needs to be met by the database. I designed both systems and was responsible for the coding and entry of data. I wrote the programs necessary for any statistical analyses and presented the results of these analyses to various audiences.
I also helped develop a student information system for the East Carolina University School of Nursing. This database is still being implemented and includes information about student academic performance from the time students declare their intention to major in nursing until they take the examination required to become registered nurses. As with the other two databases, I participated in the process of determining the information needs to be met by the database, designed the system, and wrote the programs required to produce annual reports. While I have no responsibility for coding and data entry, I write the programs required to answer specific research questions.
