Sahitya Akademi

To undertake publishing & promoting Indian literature in 24 languages. To build and upgrade libraries at New Delhi and Regional offices located at Kolkata, Mumbai and Bangalore.

Publication Schemes





Aims to full fill the basic objective of the Akademi dissemination of Indian Literature and making available to multilingual societies of Indian Literary masterpieces from other language into their own language, histories of literature, monographs on Indian Writers, translation of important Indian and foreign classics, anthologies of poetry, short-stories, one-act plays, literary essays etc.







a) Publication of 350 books including re-prints will be published in 24 languages recognized by Sahitya Akademi which consist award winning books, navodaya series, children literature, Indian classics, foreign classics, encyclopedia of Indian literature (Hindi version) and who’s who of Indian writers beside this many books in tribal literature i.e. Bodo, Garo, Santhali, Rabha, Kokborok etc.

b) Journals (Indian literature and Samkalin Bhartiya Sahitya) both are bi monthly.

c) National Bibliography of Indian Literature

(5 volumes will be brought out)

d) Royalty (we pay royalty to the authors 15 % on the original work 10% on translations and 5 % on originals translation)

Literary functions and programme

To celebrate centenaries of great writers, hold regional, national and international seminars, writers camps, workshops, symposiums etc., provide writers a forum for their periodical gathering by organizing meet the author, men and books etc.

i. Holding 111 seminars in 24 languages (30-40 participants each languages).

To give due honor and respect to the literary works contributed by the renowned National and International writers through National and International seminars so as to provide awareness of their works in the literary fields.

To enable creative young and old writers in Indian language to visit other countries and host foreign writer delegation under Cultural Exchange Programmes, to give award to literary works which merit appreciation and encouragement in all 24 Indian languages recognized by the Akademi, give honorary fellowships to eminent writers in recognition of their contribution to Indian Literature.

It aims to intensively undertake to increase sale of akademi’s publications, to advertise Akademi publications through literary journals, organize and participate in book exhibitions at regional, national and international level.

Translation Schemes,
Regional Literature Studies Projects,
Development of Languages, Fellowship: Coomara Swamy and Premchand, Bal Sahitya Puruskar and Yuva puruskar,

It pivots literary activities of the scheme under which translation prizes in 24 languages are given Annual. 4 Regional boards constituted for persuading inter regional studies, it seeks to develop and encourage 24 recognized languages. For development of languages, a project office set up by the Akademi at Baroda works and organizes various literary activities and conducting translation workshops. Foreign writers/ scholars are invited for his specific period to widen their literary awareness in r/o Indian Literature/ Languages, to give award to young creative writers/ children.







a) Translation Centre – the translation of ancient, pre-modern and modern Indian classic and also conduct regular workshops

-4 workshops and 4 seminars on Annual basis to be organized under all the 4 regional boards work on medieval and ancient Indian literature will be taken up.

-On receiving request for recognition more languages the development board will consider request and recommend for their promotion. Bhasha Samman given to writers/ scholars for propagation, modernization and enrichment of languages. Tribal literary and oral tradition: Periodical workshops, seminars on the theme of Tribal literature will be held.

-Anandakumara Swamy fellowship to eb offered to scholars from Asian countires to pursue literary project of their choice. Premchand Fellowship would be given to scholars doing a search on Indian literature or to creative writers from the countries of SAARC Region. Fellows and honorary fellows is reserved for immortal literature an limited to 21 only at any given time.

-Yuva Puruskar awards to young writers in 24 languages of age group below 35 years.



Translation being a potent and dynamic tool for modernization of a language. This enables the Akademi to reach out to as a wide readership as possible. Covering readers from National and International levels.

-This envisages for inter-regional studies with one linguistic group of languages and literature being compared with one other.

Modernization and improvement of Administrative functioning

It aims to provide computerization applications in the field of literary fields in head office as well as regional offices. The old and obsolete equipment/ computers to be replace.







Purchase of computers and its accessories, etc. purchase of furniture at Regional office including EPBX Fax Machine, photocopier, etc. AMC’s. purchase stationary. Training programme/ workshops strengthen the skills of staff.

Keeping pace with the advancement of technology for the enlightenment of the users/ officers and staff of the Akademi.

It is an on-going Scheme.

New projects/ schemes: National Bibliography of India Literature (NBIL), Encyclopedia of India Literature, translation of Indian Classics into European Languages, Anthology of Indian Discourse.



Aims to serve scholars, librarians, publishers and those interested in the book worlds as a valuable tool of reference. To give a compressive idea of the growth and development Indian literature through Encyclopedia. To bring together vast variety of thoughts pertaining to a certain body of discursive material.







NBIL in respect of Marathi, Sanskrit and Sindhi (in 4 Vol.) will be taken up. The Encyclopedia planned as 6 Vol. project of which 2 Vol. have already been published. Each Vol. of approx. 1000 pages in demy quarto size. For this encyclopedia, 100 of writers Al Over the Country will contribute articles on various topics. The most important Indian classic will be translated by eminent foreign language translators for which akademi will subsidice the publishing the work into foreign languages. It proposes to undertake four separate projects dealing with Anthologist.

Promoting and creating public awareness of various literary works in Indian and Foreign languages for the use of literary loving masses.

Constructing of office building a plot of Land allotted by DDA

Aims to have a separate go down in the basement for sales office and office on the 1st and 2nd Floor.







DDA had allotted 2011.65 sq. meter of plot at HAF, Pocket-B, Sector-11, Dwarka, and New Delhi. It is proposed to have the godown in the basement and Sales office on the first floor and second floor may be utilized as Writers’ Home.

Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA)

IGNCA was established to commemorate the memory of the Former Prime Minister Late Smt. Indira Gandhi. It is envisioned as a centre for research, academic pursuit and dissemination in the field of the arts.

Enlarge its programme of research and publication of fundamental texts, reference works, glossaries, dictionaries, encyclopedia, comparative history of Indian arts, thesaurus of fundamental terms, inter-dialect and inter-disciplinary glossaries and dictionaries, explore relationships of arts and science, dimensions and explore relationship between arts of India and the world. Special focus on the North-East and its cultural dimensions.

Multiple levels of Identity and their manifestation in Arts; Language and Cultural Diversity; Wisdom Tradition, Ecology, Resource Management and Sustainable Development; Religious Identities, Confluence of Traditions and Composite Cultures; Inter-cultural Dialogue and Contribution of Women to Indian Art and Culture.



Publication of critical editions of fundamental texts, monographs on tribal and folk culture, republication of texts by eminent scholars; Research and Field studies; Audio-video documentation; Conference, seminars and workshops; Exhibition and multi-media events; Production of films, CDs, audio-video recordings.

Augment the repository of primary source material - written, oral, auditory, audio-visual and pictorial of the IGNCA, to serve as the national centre for the arts and culture and support research and publication activities of its other in-house divisions, Upgrade and install modern management and technological tools and systems, Enhance reproduction of source materials in different me, Upgrade technology and set-up permanent galleries for display and exhibition.
