Muddy Waters

(1) An important place is held by Muddy Waters in the history of rock and roll music. (2) Many famous performers were helped by him, including Janis Joplin, Eric Clapton, and The Rolling Stones. Why? Well, Muddy Waters was one of the first musicians ever to play blues music on the electric guitar. Back in the 1940s, before there was such a thing as rock and roll, Muddy took the traditional Delta blues songs that he was used to playing in the juke joints all over Mississippi and started transforming them to play on his electric guitar. He did that with “Walkin’ Blues,” “Dark Road Blues,” and “Catfish Blues,” among others. “Catfish Blues” got renamed “Rolling Stone” after Muddy started playing it on the electric guitar.

  1. Which is the MOST effective revision of segment (1)?

    1. Muddy Waters, who an important place is held by

    2. Muddy Waters holds an important place

    3. For Muddy Waters an important place is held

    4. Correct as is

What seems not to be effective in segment 1 (in other words, which part of the segment needs to be revised)? [Hint: Are there any “be” verbs + another verb? If so, the sentence is in passive voice and needs to be rewritten in active voice.]

________________________________________________

Using POE, determine which answers address the ineffective part of the segment (in other words, change it from passive to active voice) and CROSS OUT the rest. From the rest of the answers, chose the answer that is the MOST effective way to revise.

  1. Which of the following words would best replace the underlined word in segment (2) in order to more accurately describe Muddy Waters’s relationship to some famous musicians?

    1. influenced

    2. seen

    3. addressed

    4. ignored

Use process of elimination (P.O.E.) to answer this question. On the lines below, briefly explain how you were able to eliminate the three wrong answers.

Wrong Answer #1 ________________________________________________

Wrong Answer #2 ________________________________________________

Wrong Answer #3 ________________________________________________

Tips to help you find the correct answer if you are stuck:

  • Plug it in. Put each answer in place of the segment in question and then read the rephrased sentence and the next couple of sentences. Choose the one that works the best.

  • Read the sentence aloud to yourself in your mind and consider whether it “sounds” right or awkward. If it sounds awkward, it is quite possibly in passive voice.

  • Key words in passive voice are any state of being verbs (is, am, are, be, been, being, was, were) and “by.” If both are present in a sentence, check for passive voice.

More from Muddy Waters

McKinley Morganfield was born in a town called Rolling Fork in the Mississippi Delta region of Mississippi. His parents were sharecroppers. When he was very young, Morganfield went to live with his grandmother on the Tovall Plantation in Clarksdale, Mississippi. As a toddler, he liked to play in muddy puddles and his grandmother started calling him “Muddy.” The nickname stuck. When “Muddy” got older, (1) he started working on the plantation in the corn and cotton fields. That’s where he first heard people singing the blues. By the time he was a teenager, Muddy was working on the plantation on weekdays and playing the harmonica at juke joints and parties all weekend. He learned the guitar at seventeen and started playing traditional Mississippi Delta blues songs. Songs like “Dark Road Blues” and “Walking Blues” were raw, passionate expressions of the (2) boring lives many people had to endure living in the Delta in those days.

  1. The lives of the people in the Mississippi Delta who inspired Muddy Water’s blues are more accurately described by changing the word in segment (2) to—

    1. large

    2. carefree

    3. difficult

    4. tricky
