Resolution 7: People should tell the truth at all times

PROPOSITION (FOR)

OPPOSITION (AGAINST)

  1. Introduction

"No legacy is so rich as honesty," says William Shakespeare. Today, we will debate whether people should tell the truth at all times. I believe that if you want to gain someone's trust, then the power of truth is very important. It makes people have a good view of you. We will make our position with the following arguments to support our position.

  1. Present the 1st argument

Our first argument to support the resolution is that you will gain respect and trust from others when you tell the truth. This is true because you will always share secrets or cooperate with honest people. For example, as soon as you show the other person that you only lied once, it can destroy that trust. They'll start to wonder, "If they lied about that, what else could they lie about?" This is important because It is difficult to gain trust and respect from others, so don't risk someone losing respect for you because of a lie.

  1. Introduction

“I believe that we should be teaching our kids, students and employees when and how to lie.” says Maurice Schweitzer. Today, we will debate whether people should tell the truth at all times. I believe that if mastered, lying the right way can actually help build connections, trust and businesses. We will make our position with the following arguments to support our position.

  1. Refute the opponent’s 1st argument

Your team said that you will gain respect and trust from others when you tell the truth. That may be true, but I think there are lies, when they are discovered, the more respect and, especially, love you receive from the other side. Because in life, we can't always tell the truth frankly. Lying to protect others, lying to make others happy or reassured, these are lies that will be respected by others. This is very important because sometimes the truth will cause negative effects on the listener.

  1. Present the first argument

Our of first argument to oppose the resolution that it is not always advisable to tell the truth. This is true because each of us has our deepest secrets or a bad thing that we hide is not a criminal crime. We know that if other people know about this secret, it will easily make us bad in the eyes of others. Or at least embarrass us, it will even have a negative impact on your life. People say "Nothing stings like truth" is not wrong in the above cases. Telling these truths is not only disheartening and hurtful but also an insult to others.

  1. Refute the opponent’s 1st argument

Your group says that lie to avoid hurting and hiding secrets for other people, to avoid the person being hurt or embarrassed. This may be true but I disagree because lying is probably one of the most common misdeeds we all commit. If a friend asks you how they look in a new, expensive dress, you pretend it's pretty and tell them they look great while they're not even perfect in that dress, or worse, you don't want to offend them and you don't want to damage your friendship. However, they may face an even greater shame if they wear it and your friendship may be damaged. In my opinion, it is not considered a moral issue that you lie to protect this or that person while it concerns their life problems, but in many sensitive situations and lying is not prioritized, the truth is the weapon that helps them to face and overcome everything.

  1. Present the 2nd argument

Our second argument to support the resolution is that as they say truth prevails in the end. For example; A husband had many love affairs in the past. If he doesn't tell his wife about it, if his wife asks about it, it will create an environment of mistrust between the two. If the husband openly shares it with his wife, it will hurt the wife for the time being, but with time she will be encouraged by the fact that her husband does not hide things from her. This is important because it will strengthen their relation. I will always prefer telling the truth all the times.

  1. Refute the opponent’s 2nd argument

Your team said that as they say truth prevails in the end. I disagree because a clever lie will make the relationship better even if they still know the truth in the end. Because but most of all, that lie will minimize the damage as much as possible to the opponent. Therefore, even if they eventually learn the truth, the relationship won't break if the lie doesn't hurt them.

  1. Present the 2nd argument

Our second argument to oppose this resolution is that telling the truth at the wrong time is worse than a lie. That is true because many young people today are always proud of themselves because they dare to speak the truth but only use the truth to poke fun at others. As for the grievances of other people that need to speak out for protection, they choose to remain silent. So, if lies do not badly affect or hurt others, on the contrary, bring trust and joy to everyone, it is still much better than "telling the truth but at the wrong time".

  1. Refute the opponent’s viewpoint

Your group said that lying without hurting the feelings of others, and lying are seen as a way to protect other people. This is maybe true but I think there is always a way to solve a problem and remain honest. People who are sick and dying have the right to know the truth so that they can make the most of their remaining time to live to the fullest. Furthermore, lying, even in good faith, creates fear that their lies might be revealed, it's even worse, where the connection between a liar and trust is very fragile. So, it's hard to gain credibility if you're caught lying. Relationships or solace built on lies won't last, and while it's hard, it's a lot better if one person is honest from the start.

  1. Present the 3rd argument

Our third argument to affirm the resolution is that we would waste less time if everyone always told the truth. This is true because we won't have to wait for a lie. For example, when you go to a job interview or a first date, if the other person doesn't think you are right for what they need, they will immediately tell you. That way, you won't have to sit at home waiting for the phone to ring, or go on a second date when there's no chance. This is very important because everyone's time is extremely valuable, so don't let your lies take up other people's time.

  1. Refute the opponent’s 3rd argument

Your team said that telling the truth helps us save time. That may be true, but I think in some cases, telling the truth takes longer than lying. Because in fact, humans know what other people want to hear, let's say someone gives a speech and they did well, and they come to you asking if they did well. If you can't lie, you'll say "no" because of the fact that they're not okay, not good. They'll keep asking until they get what they want, whereas if you lie and say "yes," they will be satisfied and stop asking questions. Therefore, telling the truth doesn't save us any time.

  1. Present the 3rd argument

Our third argument to oppose this resolution is that it is acceptable for a person to lie when telling the truth could hurt someone or embarrass them. Because there are occasions when this can be tricky. If a friend asks you how they look in a new, expensive dress, you have a great incentive to tell them they look wonderful. you do not want to offend them and you do not want to harm your friendship. This is important because if your friend's dress looks terrible, they could face a greater embarrassment if they wear it.

  1. Refute the opponent’s 3rd view point.

Your team said that telling the truth could hurt someone or embarrass them. That may be true, but I think it is not considered an ethical issue when it related to small issues, but in many sensitive situations, lying is not preferred. Because some people might take lying as a habit and it leads him to lie in every situation and harmed people. Therefore, we should not rely on lying to avoid being in bad situations, sometimes it may be useful at another time it may not work as we planned.

  1. Make conclusion

In short, no lie can be hidden, so it's best never to lie. Especially lying to the people, you love because you "don't want to upset them, don't want them to worry..." Believe me, the consequences of such tiny lies can sometimes bring harm. that you wouldn't expect. In all cases, the truth always takes precedence. No one can retort or criticize a person who dares to tell the truth, this is even better for someone like them, they can learn many lessons from that truth. So why should we be dominated by lies and not choose the truth for ourselves, this is very important.

  1. Make conclusion

In short, honesty is not always the best policy. No one wants to hear that they look heavier or less attractive. Honest people are seen as blunt, antisocial, and sick all the time. Therefore, it would be silly if you always told the truth.
