FIRST AID NOSEBLEEDS

Nosebleeds


Nosebleeds aren't usually serious and can be easily treated.

What causes them?



  • Sneezing and blowing

  • Infection

  • High blood pressure

  • Head injury

  • Picking their nose

Actions

  • Sit the casualty down, leaning forward

  • Ask them to breathe through their mouth

  • Pinch the soft part of their nose (or they can do it themselves) for ten minutes

  • Reassure them

Further action

If the bleeding doesn't stop after ten minutes, pinch the nostrils again for two further periods of ten minutes.



If the nosebleed is severe or the bleeding doesn't stop after 30 minutes, call 911.


FIRST AID AMPUTATIONS



Amputations

  • Cutting or tearing off of a body part

  • Usually bleed heavily

Activate EMS immediately
RESPOND:

  • Wrapped severed tissue in sterile gauze and keep it cold and dry by placing it in a sealed plastic bag and putting ice on it

  • Control Bleeding

    • Direct pressure to wound

  • Elevate

  • Bandage and Protect

    • Sterile or clean dressing and bandage

  • Transport tissue and victim to hospital

  • Elevate

  • Bandage and Protect

    • Sterile or clean dressing and bandage

  • Transport tissue and victim to hospital

Wound Care Precautions



  • If wound involves metal

    • Tetanus shot may be necessary

  • Avoid direct contact with blood

  • Do NOT clean large or severe wounds

  • Do NOT scrub a wound



FIRST AID POISON

Poison Prevention

  • Keep household poisons labeled and out of reach of children

  • Wear appropriate clothing around poisonous plants or chemicals

  • Report abnormal odors

  • Do not abuse alcohol or drugs




FIRST AID COLD AND HEAT


Cold and Heat Related Prevention

  • Body temperature must be regulated
