Accredited in 2003 with B+ grade by NAAC, the institution had an opportunity to devote itself to quality sustenance, enhancement and progress of the college in letter and spirit. Having established Internal Quality Assurance Cell in the college, we are constantly viewing, reviewing and analyzing our strengths and weaknesses and creating opportunities to grow multi-dimensionally so as to provide holistic education to our students. We appreciate the mechanism of IQAC developed under the auspices of NAAC to guide the Institution on the ever-going
self- assessment, monitoring and evaluation.
While preparing this self-appraisal report, we took special care of the report of the previous Peer-team which has worked as a torch-light for us through these years, keeping us aware of the areas where we needed improvement and we have tried our best to catapult our short comings. A lot of infrastructure has been added to keep pace with the modern and technologically advanced globalised world. Be it the courses, teaching-learning methods, skill development or extension activities, we have taken pains to give quality exposure and training to our students.
As we present ourselves for re-accreditation, we reiterate our commitment to continually intensify our efforts to meet the growing demands of educational scenario in the global context.

Madho Ram Daya Ram Sanatan Dharm Girls College (M.D.S.D. Girls College), Ambala City is a NAAC accredited(B+) affiliated institution of Kurukshetra University imparting education to girls in Arts, Commerce, B.Sc (Fashion and Textile Designing), PGDCA and M.A in Yoga and Health. The college is located on the outskirts of Ambala City catering to girl students of most of the rural areas/ villages in the periphery of Ambala. 35 years have stepped out of the calendar since its inception and the college is known for quality education, supplemented with skill development, in the educational milieu of Ambala. Following the pattern of the new education policy and imbibed with the principles of ‘Sanatan Dharma’, it is engendering the spirit of ‘Karmanyav Adhikaraste’ and rendering selfless service and positive contribution towards society.
The college has constantly been transmitting academic advancement along with multifarious accomplishments aiming at the total growth and personality development of its students. Aiming at reinforcing the genuine empowerment of women, the students are encouraged and facilitated towards vocational education. They are given required guidance, exposure and trainings to become financially independent by becoming entrepreneurs or grabbing job opportunities.
The college has prestigiously established itself on the map of Kurukshetra University by winning the title of ‘Best Women College of the Zone’ for many years consecutively in the past. The achievements of the students in the area of academics with high pass percentage and numerous distinctions in different subjects speak highly of the quantitative as well as qualitative results.
The District, State, University and National level achievements in N.C.C, N.S.S. and Sports add to the glorious image of the Institution. It is a matter of pride and prestige for us that our student has represented Asian Power Lifting Championship held at Korea and won Bronze Medal for the country. The college has now many kinds of latest hi-tech teaching-learning aids, equipments and facilities which accelerate its momentum on the path of developing academic competence and research acumen.

CURRICULAR ASPECTS With the mission of shaping our students into human beings who are intellectually competent, ethical, compassionate to carry forward Indian values with modern outlook and an objective to make every student employable through holistic education, the college offers B.A., B.Com (General), B.Com (Vocational), B. Sc, PGDCA and M.A. in Yoga & Health. As per the recommendation of NAAC Peer Team in the process of Accreditation (Cycle I), new vocational courses have been introduced. Besides adding vocational stream in B.Com, B.Sc. in Fashion and
Textile Design and M.A. in Yoga & Health have been introduced. The curriculum is further strengthened by a number of Add-on Courses (1 Year Certificate/2 Year Diploma/3 Year Advanced Diploma by K.U.K.) in Garment Construction, Fashion Design, Textile Designing, Web Designing, IT, Diet, Nutrition & Health Education, Cosmetology, Yoga & Health and Functional English.
Some short term courses like Fashion and Interior Designing, Herbal products and Beauty Care, Web Designing Language, HTML and Ideology of Jawaharlal Nehru are also run from time to time to equip the students with various vocational skills. Special courses on Soft-skills/English speaking are being organized to improve their communication skills and personality. Trainings like Yoga, Karate, First-aid, Disaster management aim at further enrichment of curricula. Value education is imparted through Prayer Assembly, extension lectures and extension activities executed by different quality cells.
Our major faculty development initiatives include organizing and participating in National Level Seminars/Workshops/Conferences/Orientation and Refresher Courses & trainings on ICT based teaching-learning. Networking with Industrial experts and feedback on curriculum obtained from academic peers, parents and stakeholders has facilitated the structuring and upgradationof the curriculum of vocational courses and innovative initiatives. Members of our faculty, nominated by affiliating University on its Board of Studies & Academic Council make positive contributions in making the syllabi relevant and enriched.
TEACHING LEARNING & EVALUATION
The college has a transparent admission process. Students are admitted to various courses on merit basis. As the college gets grant-in-aid, the admission of students is governed by the Govt. policy of reservation of seats for different categories of students.
Student performance is assessed with periodical tests. The college supports the educationally disadvantage students by conducting remedial classes for them. Advanced learners are given special attention to help them get even better results. The college has suitable facilities for the differently-abled students and takes initiatives to champion their cause.
Teachers unitize the syllabus and constantly monitor it. The lecture method is supplemented by assignments, group discussions, interactive sessions, field visits and various contests and competitions. The college has ‘Smart Class rooms’, fully equipped computer labs and the modern pedagogical tools like Interactive Boards, Overhead Projectors, Televisions, Video-conferencing equipment, Audio players, Multimedia Projectors, collar mikes, and other Audio-Visual Teaching-learning aids.
The college follows the continuous and cumulative assessment methods as per the University norms details of which are transparent and communicated to all the students. The class room attendance, performance, class tests and assignments together make for 20% assessment marks given to students by the teachers which is added to their score in the university examination.
Most of the classes have shown 100% results in the last 4 years barring a few ’reappears’ for some of the students in one or more subjects.
The teachers are appointed according to UGC, DHE and University norms. The college has the freedom and resources to appoint and pay temporary and additional staff.
The teachers are well motivated and consistently update their knowledge by attending Seminars/Workshops/Refreshers courses/Orientation programs and Trainings. The college has also organized a good number of state/national level seminars, workshops and trainings for faculty and student development.
Our college has a transparent system of evaluating teacher performance. They fill their ACR (Annual Confidential Report) performa every year. It includes their self appraisal on teaching, co-curricular activities, responsibilities assigned, initiatives and contribution for institutional progress. They are also involved in upgrading the whole system considering the feedback given by students, peers, parents, alumni and Management.
The atmosphere on the campus promotes harmony and commitment to higher values. The team spirit and leadership qualities are inculcated in students through involving them actively in all the co-curricular activities organized in the college.
RESEARCH, CONSULTANCY & EXTENSION
The college motivates and facilitates the faculty to pursue research programs leading to Ph. D. Out of 14 permanent faculty members, 2 have Ph. D degrees, 7 have M. Phil and PGDTE (equivalent to M. Phil) and others have PG degrees with honors. With the seed money from U.G.C., 3 faculty members have completed Minor Research Projects and one is doing MRP. Some of these are collaborative research projects. The college has Gandhian Study Centre and Nehru Studies Centre which are recognized as Research Centres and Research Associates have been doing research on these eminent personalities, writing and presenting research papers in National Seminars and getting their research findings published. These research centres are inter-disciplinary as these are being co-ordinated by the faculty of Dept. of Political Science and Dept. of History respectively. National level seminars sponsored by UGC/DHE/MHRD/ICSSR/NHRC are organized by different departments every year. As many as 17 National level seminars have been organized in the last 4 years on various topics and issues of vital importance. Research Papers have been presented by our faculty in National/International Workshops organized by other institutions also.
A National level Research Journal is published under ISSN No: 2455-7056. Three books have been published on Minor Research Projects and Eleven booklets have been published compiling Research Papers presented in these seminars. Three Catalogues have been printed showcasing the great works of eminent artists created in National level Fine arts Workshops organized in the college. Six booklets have been published compiling the Research articles of Research Associates under Nehru Studies Centre and Gandhian Study Centre. Some of the staff members have written books, Research Papers and articles and got them published.
The college magazine ‘Sanatan Surbhi’, published annually, gives a vibrant platform to students and faculty to give expression to their feelings, thoughts and creative writing skills.
Some of the teachers offer honorary consultancy in computer science, vocational subjects, career guidance and sports on honorary basis.
Our college is well known for its extension activities. There are many quality cells like N.S.S., N.C.C., Women Cell, Red Cross Unit, Legal Literacy cell, Equal Opportunity Centre, Nehru Studies Centre, Career Guidance & Placement Cell which are actively involved in social service and extension activities throughout the year. Our college has adopted two slum areas in the neighborhood where cleanliness, medical, environment protection and literacy drives are carried out extensively. The students conduct surveys, identify the problems of the residents, work out strategies to alleviate those issues and serve their cause. Besides this, the college has a wide range of extension and outreach programs with special focus on the under privileged and vulnerable sections of society. Medical camps, workshops, seminars, contests, talks, exhibitions, rallies, educational tours and awareness campaigns on social and environmental issues are frequently organized in collaboration with GOs and NGOs like Rotary International, Inner Wheel, Bharat Vikas Parishad, St. John Ambulance Association, Shri Sathya Sai Sewa Organization and People’s Welfare Society. Workshops and trainings on First-aid, Disaster Management, Yoga and Self defence inculcate essential skills in the students. Faculty members co-ordinating extension activities like N.S.S., N.C.C., Women Cell, Red Cross Unit are sent to attend the trainings and workshops to upgrade their competence in the field.
Some of the faculty members and students have got recognitions and honours for their outstanding contributions.
We are fortunate to be associated with Rotary India Literacy Mission and are actively participating in its international project ‘TEACH’.
People from the neighborhood community and from the city are invited, motivated and involved in the extension activities organized by the college. Eminent Personalities, Govt. Officers, Industrialists and Educationists are also invited in college functions, Seminars, Workshops, Career Fests, Exhibitions and Social Initiatives.
M.O.Us and agreements have been signed with various institutions/organizations for organizing academic and extension activities as well as ‘On the Job Trainings’ and placements.
The faculty exchange with the neighbouring institutions at various occasions helps in ensuring faculty development.
The college is spread over two acres with green lawns and playgrounds. The college building comprises of Administration block, Arts block, Commerce block, Labs, Library, Hostel, Canteen, Gandhian & Nehru Studies Centres, Conference room, Auditorium, Gymnasium, Shooting Range & sports arena. There are separate rooms for N.C.C., N.S.S, Career Guidance and Day Care Centre. Yoga Centre and Health Care Centre are there for medical care. The college building is periodically enhanced with new constructions and additions in infrastructure.
Optimum utilization of the infrastructure is ensured by running Add-on Courses, short-term courses, IGNOU Centre, PCP of Distance Education Courses of K.U.K. and holding competitive exams of Govt. and other organizations. Some infrastructure facilities like Computer Labs, Play-grounds are used by SBNSD Sr. Sec. School which is under the same society that manages our college. The infrastructure also provides facilities for the differently abled students.
Our college has well furnished class-rooms, labs, 5 ICT enabled smart class rooms, fully air-conditioned Conference Room (with conferencing facility) and State of the art Auditorium furnished with latest sound system, sound proofing and LED display system.
Specialized labs like Computer Labs, Fine Arts Lab, Language Lab, Innovative Audio-Visual Lab, Music Lab, Fashion & Textile Designing Labs, Cosmetology Lab, Diet Nutrition & Health Lab, Yoga & Physiotherapy Lab, and Naturopathy Lab facilitate effective teaching and learning.
The college has internet (Wi-Fi) facility which is available to every department, labs, administrative office, library and hostel through BSNL internet facility with 1 GB speed keeping in view the role and impact of technological achievements on higher education. The college has added latest electronic audio-visual devices and upgraded the ICT facilities to facilitate computer-aided teaching and enrich the pedagogical process. The innovative audio-visual lab is equipped with 3D T.V., LCD Projector, Touch Screen, Interactive Board & Interactive Panel.
There is a playground with Badminton Court/Hand Ball Court, Shooting Range, Gymnasium & a common room with the provision of indoor games.
The college Library with a good number of books, journals, periodicals and Book-bank facility provide a reading ambience and culture to the students and faculty. There are separate sections for reading, research, reference books, career guidance books, text books, magazines & newspapers, reprography and IT Zone,.
A Computer lab annexed to the library facilitates the students for online browsing, reading and downloading. The students can get the required material printed and xeroxed as this facility is available in the library itself.
The book-bank facility is available for students who are deserving or belong to underprivileged sections of society. During the last four years, the college has spent considerable amount on
purchase of books & periodicals. The library remains open from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm (on weekdays) and extended hours during examination. Most of the departments have departmental libraries. The Library services are monitored by the Library Advisory Committee.
Water coolers with R.O. systems, Generators for power back-up, CCTV cameras and fire-extinguishers are installed as welfare and safety measures.
The college hostel within the college premises has a capacity of 50 students. Elaborate arrangements have been made to provide academically conducive, safe and secure accommodation with homely ambience. Computer facility including access to internet is also made available.
The college has a mini bus to provide transportation facility to the students. There is a day-care centre and a health centre on campus with the required first-aid facilities and a visiting doctor.
The college ensures optimum utilization of budget allocated for maintenance and upkeep of the college infrastructure. Annual stock taking, maintenance, periodic repairs etc. are imperative in our institution.
STUDENT PROGRESSION AND SUPPORT
Our college is known for its quality teaching and excellent results. Our students have shown consistently good results. Most of the times we have shown 100% pass percentage and a good number of first divisions in the university examinations. The drop-out rate is negligible. About 40%-50% students join higher studies. As there is a wide range of skill based programs being taken up by the students, many of them have been successful in setting up their own business, Boutiques, Beauty-parlours, and Dance-academies etc. Many of our students have chosen teaching as their profession after completing post graduation and are employed in colleges and schools. Some of them have cleared NET/STET/HTET also. Some of our alumni are working in big concerns like ISRO.
The college keeps prospective students informed of the opportunities available in the college for academic pursuits, through an updated ‘Prospectus’ published annually before ‘Admissions’. The Prospectus includes information regarding admission criteria, procedure, fee structures, scholarships, examination system, hostel, college rules and other information as a roadmap to help the students. Library concessions and incentives are given to deserving students. The students also get a large number of scholarships given by the Government, UGC, Trusts, Societies and Philanthropists. About 300 students have benefitted from financial assistance/scholarships to the tune of Rs. 11.58lakhs during the last four years. The deserving students are issued text books from the Book-bank for the whole semester.
There is an Equal Opportunity Cell in the college which has organized meetings, lectures, seminars and workshops to bring awareness, sensitization and uplifting of the students belonging
to SC/ST categories. It has organized coaching classes for Remedial teaching and Entry in Services. The students of minority communities, weaker sections and different abilities are also helped with financial assistance, suitable teaching aids, additional classes and infrastructural support.
Along with academics, students are motivated to participate in literary, cultural and sports activities at college, inter-college, university, state, national and international level. They have proved their competence and brought laurels to the college. The college students participate in Youth Festivals every year and exhibit their skills and talents in the field of Cultural and Literary activities, Fine Arts and Quiz. The college also provides recreation and leisure time facilities like indoor/outdoor games.
There is much emphasis on Spoken English and Computer Literacy. As the students coming from rural areas are often lacking in these, a number of short term courses in these two fields are organized every year. Vocational courses for skill orientation have been introduced. Seminars, workshops, lectures, career fests and industry visits are organized to develop the students’ employability as well as their interpersonal and entrepreneurial skills.
The college has an Alumni Association which provides strong support to the students in the form of motivating lectures, book-donations and assistance in organizing functions.
The students get counselling by Women Cell and Legal Literacy cell on women related issues. Anti-ragging Committee and Career Guidance Cell also give counselling in their respective fields. Career Guidance and Placement Cell updates the students about different avenues and opportunities relating to their career and satisfies their queries. The cell invites reputed faculty and personnel from other institutions and organizations and co-ordinates the conduct of seminars, workshops, lectures and interactive sessions. Career-cum- placement fests and book-exhibitions are organized to provide platform for better exposure and awareness. The college has signed M.O.Us for On-the job trainings and placements with a number of organizations.
Although the students of under-graduate courses don’t get considerable campus placements but preparing them for competitive tests, guiding them through trainings, mock tests, mock G.Ds and interviews is a regular feature.
The Grievance Redressal Cell adopts a well defined and fair procedure for redressing grievances regarding academic matters, health services, library, transportation and other central services. Details about various welfare schemes and activities to be organized is displayed on notice boards. The college annually publishes its magazine ‘Sanatan Surabhi’ which comprises of English Section, Hindi Section, Punjabi Section, Planning Forum and News Section. Creative endeavours like articles, stories, poems and other genres find a platform for expression and publishing. There is an ‘Opinion-desk’ to provide platform to students for free expression and creative thinking and writing.
GOVERNANCE, LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT
The college has a Managing Committee with President, General Secretary and Finance Secretary as office bearers. The meetings of the Management and staff are a regular feature. The college Principal works incessantly for better organization and management.
We have a Grievance Redressal Cell and Anti-ragging Cell. The institutional environment is so homely and harmonious that such problems seldom arise. But in case any problem arises, it is dealt with and resolved quickly and amicably.
For good governance and internal co-ordination, we have various committees like the Admission Committee, Time Table Committee, Purchase Committee, Research and Publication Committee, Women Cell, Equal Opportunity Cell, Advisory Committee and a number of Co-curricular societies like Cultural Society, Literary Society, Social Sciences Society, Mathematics Society, Commerce Society and Red Cross Unit.
In keeping with the vision and mission of the college, our college Management, Principal and staff make sincere efforts to empower our students through quality education, discipline and team work and inculcate human values to enable them fulfil their ethical and social responsibilities towards humanity.
IQAC holds its meetings with staff, students and stakeholders regularly to deliberate on quality policy and motivate them to achieve targets with mutual co-operation. Analysis of previous year’s feedback from stakeholders is considered to take decisions and form policies for the next year. IQAC prepares AQAR every year towards self-assessment, monitoring, evaluation and preparation for the following year.
Faculty is motivated and given a free hand by the Management to plan, propose and execute developmental measures for upgrading infrastructure, teaching-learning aids, short-term courses and their own professional acumen and accomplishments. Management and Principal follow open-door policy. U.G.C/D.H.E/MHRD/ICSSR sponsored National Seminars are organized every year in the college. Faculty is also encouraged and facilitated to attend State, National and International level Seminars, Workshops and Conferences organized by other institutions. A number of faculty members have improved qualification, completed Minor Research Projects, written and presented Research Papers, published books and Research Articles.
The college has networked with N.G.Os and Industry for better exposure, interaction, trainings, placements and social service projects. M.O.Us have been signed in this direction.
Feedback taken from students, alumni, parents, society representatives and eminent personalities (in Visitor’s Book) visiting the campus is assimilated and provides the basis for our SWOC analysis and improvement. The teachers fill their self appraisal performa (ACR) every year which
is evaluated by higher authorities. Students’ feedback is also an important factor for appraisal of faculty and staff.
Non-Teaching staff is encouraged and permitted to enhance their qualification. Computer training has been given to the administrative staff to make use of the fully automated office system and on latest software of accounting and office management. The college has various welfare schemes for the teaching and non-teaching staff.
The college gets grant-in-aid from Government. Some funds are managed by the college Management. The college Bursar checks all the accounts. Internal audit is carried out every year by the Chartered Accountant appointed by the Management. External audit is conducted by University, DGHE and Auditors from AG office Haryana. Granting agencies like UGC, ICSSR and MHRD audit the grants released by them.
INNOVATIONS AND BEST PRACTICES
Playing its role towards environmental conservation, the greenery in the college has been created and maintained by planting trees, decorative as well as herbal plants and grassy lawns. Discretion is exercised in collection and disposal of waste. The conservation and saving of power is being supplemented with maintaining carbon neutrality through various measures. Rain water is harvested in a deep underground well and used for various purposes other than drinking.
The institution keeps on innovating ideas and methods with the objective of dynamic growth of the students, infrastructure, finances, teaching-learning aids and other constituents embodying its vision and mission.

College being on the outskirts of the city is quite far from the main bus-stand and Railway station.
Lack of Roadways facility from different adjoining rural areas becomes a disadvantage for the institution.
The institution is still facing the unmet demand of opening of new PG courses.

The college has not yet been able to instal solar energy panels to save/ conserve electricity.
