Societies

There are total nine Societies established in the college as per the instructions of Chandigarh Administration. Each student has to opt for three societies at the time of admission. All the societies work throughout the year in different spheres.


Drug De-addiction Society

The convener of the society is Ms. Mona Singh Associate Professor in History. As Drug Addiction is a ground reality of youth today the main focus of the society is to educate and inform the student of the intense need to understand and disperse accumulated knowledge on the pressing need of addiction in all its forms.The activities include:



  • Orientation workshop for students

  • Village Sohana adopted by the students

  • Human Chain displaying poster on “Drug Abuse”

  • A full length feature film on substance abuse Requiem for a Dream was screened for

the students.

  • A Public Information Meet was organized for the whole College with the help of Alcoholics Anonymous and Al-Anon Chandigarh to spread the message of a Drug Free Environment. The society undertook many programmes to work towards distribution of pamphlets on de-addiction supplied by self-help groups.

Gender Equity Society

The convener of the society is Ms. Shashi Wahi. Associate Professor in Political Science .Gender equity means fairness of treatment for men and women, according to their respective needs. This may include equal treatment in terms of rights, benefits, obligations and opportunities. In the development context a gender equity goal often require built –in measures to compensate for the historical and social disadvantage of women.

  • A Talk on “Rules of Law, Equality and Reservation”

  • Dr. Shurti Bedi’sTalk on ‘Women Rights with Legal Perspective’

  • International Women Day was celebrated. Dr. Manju Malhotra, Prof. Department of History, Punjab University, Chandigarh delivered a Talk on Gender Discrimination and Women Empowerment” on 8th march 2011. She highlighted issues like female foeticide, sexual harassment and domestic violence.

Best Out of Waste Society

The convener of the society is Dr. Simmi Arora, Associate Professor in Fine Arts. Main activities are:



  • Preparation of jhanki of Janamashtami

  • Painting Demonstration was given by a professional artist Mr. Laxman Parsad

  • Three days workshop to create 3D landscapes of Yamuna river its surroundings with the use of waste material.

  • Celebration of Chandigarh Carnival from 22nd to 24th Nov. 2013 “Theme years of Indian Cinema” was held at Leisure Valley, Sector-10, Chandigarh. Our Fine art students have participated to prepare float for Chandigarh Carnival


Community Hygiene and Sanitation Society

The Convener of the society is Dr. Harphool Singh, Associate Professor in Defence Studies.




  • Orientation Programme

  • Cleaniness drive in the College Campus

  • Society visited Satya Sai Baba Old Age Home, Sector 29, Chandigarh to know abouit their wellbeing and sensitized the students about their duties towards the society. The students took the pledge to serve the needy and neglected section of the society.

  • Cleaniness drive at Ram Darbar was carried out and followed by Tree Plantation.


AIDS Awareness and Healty Society

The convener of the society is Mr. Rajinder Singh Associate Professor in Punjabi Dept.



  • Orientation workshop.

  • Essay writing on CHALLENGES OF AIDS AWARENESS ON WORLD Aids Day

  • A rally was also organised at sector-17 plaza, by the AIDS awareness and health society in collaboration with the state aids control society Chandigarh.

Traffic Awareness and Road Safety Society

The convener of the society is Mr. Dalbir Singh Associate Professor in Mathematics



  • Orientation Workshop.

  • The members of a society pledged to obey traffic rules while driving their vehicles on road and wear helmet as and when they drive two wheelers.

  • Organized“WEAR HELMET CAMPAIGN” at the main gate of the college from 1st August to 6th August. 2011 and checked the two wheelers crossing the road. Enrolment performas were also filled by the members of the society.

  • More than 60 volunteers of the society visited Children Traffic Park, Sector-23, Chandigarh on 30.9.2013. Under the guidance of Sh. Sukhdev Singh, Sub-Inspector and Mr. Desh Raj, Head Constable, our volunteers learnt much more about traffic rules.

  • Organised an exhibition on road safety rules on 8th November, 2012 in the college campus. It was organised in collaboration with Chandigarh Traffic Park, Sector-23, Chandigarh

Environment Awareness Society

The convener of the society is Dr. Karambir Singh Associate Professor in Sociology



  • Orientation workshop

  • Van-Mahotsva was celebrated by organizing plantation drive in the month of July. About 250 saplings were planted in the college campus. In the month of August an Awareness Rally highlighting the use of conventional energy was organized

  • A talk on “Reduce, Reuse and Recyle “ was delivered by Ms. Tejinder Kaur , Vice Chairperson DeshBhagat Group of Institutions and CEO, Hara Punjab.

  • The Department of Geography in collaboration with the Environment Awareness Society and Environment Department celebrated “The International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer” by organizing various activities.

  • The Environment awareness society and the department of Environment Education participated in Jadi-Bootidiwas organized by Patanjaliyog trust, Chandigarh and Bharat Swabhiman N.G.O. Students of the college prepared and displayed the posters related to the environmental issues on August 04,2013.

  • A “SaveEarth” campaign was held during the festive season as the intensity of pollution goes very high due to bursting of crackers during this season.


Preservation, Promotion of Culture & Heritage Society

The convener of the society is Dr. Sahib Singh ,Associate Professor in Public Admistration and Dr, S.S Minhas Associate Professor in Hindi



  • On behalf of Chandigarh Administration, our college students welcomed the Common Wealth games baton by presenting folk dances (luddi, bhangra, gidha and Dhola) at Cricket Stadium ,Sec 16, Chd on 3rd July 2010.

  • The society celeberated Teej in which girls attired in colourful dresses performed gidha and sang teej songs

  • Kite flying competition was organized on 9thfeb 2011 on the occasion of celeberation of basant panchami. Principal Dr.Sham lata applauded the role of the society for inspiring the students for keeping the healthy tradition alive.

  • Our college folk dance luddi and folk song team who represented Chandigarh in the 16th National youth festival organized by the Ministry of youth Affairs and sports, Govt. of India at Udaipur(Rajasthan) from 12 to 16 Jan2011 and brought laurals by bagging the 2nd and 3rd position respectevily under the guidance of Dr. Sahib Singh and Mrs. Mona Singh contigent incharges of the teams.


Literary Society

The convener of the society is Dr.Indu Bala Singh Prof. in English Dept.Main activities are:



  • A debate contest was held on the topic ‘Are Women really respected in India?’

  • Three students were selected to participate in the Elocution Competition on the topic ’Decline in Human Values’ which was held at SatyaSaiSeva Organization.

  • Students also participated in Inter- College Fest, ‘PANACHE’, 2013 for debate & poetry recitation

  • Two films made by Dr. Indubala Singh along with the Functional English students of the college, Hum Kisi Se KumNahinand‘Aaj Ki taazaKhabar’were screened in the Multi-Media Hall in which the students themselves conducted the programme. The films were also screened at PGGCG-42 and got an overwhelming response.

  • A workshop on TV anchoring was also organized and students were given instructions for Television Anchoring & News Presentation and were taken for a visit to the Doordarshan Centre at Chandigarh.

Student Council

Selection: The 4 office bearers-President, Vice President, Secretary and Joint Secretary are elected directly by the students of the campus. Elections to the Students Council in various departments is held generally in the month of September on a date and time as may be fixed by the Dean Student Welfare, Panjab University, Chandigarh.

Activities:

  • To promote healthy corporate life on the campus.

  • To ensure maintenance of proper Academic Atmosphere and orderliness on the College Campus.

  • To help in allocation of amalgamated fund for different authorized purposes and activities connected with Student Welfare.

  • To assist in organizing various cultural, religious and sports functions.



3.6.5How does the institution promote the participation of students and faculty in extension activities including participation in NSS, NCC,YRC and other National /International agencies?

The college attracts the students to undertake wide spread co-curricular enrichment activities through NCC(Army Wing, and Naval Wing ),NSS, Societies, NGO’sand other forms of community outreach programme. There are two NCC wings in the college. The teaching faculty in charge is as under:



  • Army Wing : Dr Mahender Singh

  • Naval wing: Dr. Parshant Gaurav

The National Cadet Corps unit in our college has been working hard to groom the leaders of tomorrow into disciplined and patriotic citizens who form the second line of defence. Our college has produced a large pool of trained youth ready for induction into the armed forces of the country.

NCC cadets of the Army wing participated in the local Independence Day and Republic Day Parade at the parade Ground, Chandigarh as well as in other activities organized by the Directorate.


2011-12 Naval wing

  • A Contingent of 8 cadets who participated in the Independence Day and Republic Day Celebrations at Parade Grounds, Sector-17, Chandigarh, was adjudged the best in the city.

  • In the Annual Athletic Meet of the college, the naval contingent won the first prize in march-past.

  • Our Naval Cadets excelled in various training camps.

3.6Give details on social surveys, research or extension work (ifany)undertaken by the college to ensure social justice and empower students from under privileged and vulnerable sections of society?

NSS unit of the college have been coordinating Socio-Economic Survey of the adopted village RamDarbar. The village has been supported from all the angles. They have been encouraged to send their children to schools. Keep the environment clean by keeping their surroundings clean. They have been educated for good health services e.g. giving proper vaccination to their children, proper way of cooking their food. Drug De-Addiction Societyhave adopted Village Sohana to keep it Drug free. Institution helps the students by awarding Scholarship, Extra Class and fee Concession for the students. The college had organised a self defence training camp for the girls with the help of Chandigarh police. There is a cell for differently abled students to encourage them to scale new heights in their life.
3.6.7 Reflectingon objectives and expected outcomes of the extension activities organized by the institution,comment on how they complement student’s academic learning experience and specify the values and skills inculcated.
Objectives

Extension activity conducted by the institution always imbibes academic learning experience, values and skills in the institution as whole.These activities fresh the environment of the institution as well. The major strength of this college is its ability to ensure holistic development of students to make them enlightened citizens; equal opportunity provides knowledge and quality education to all sections of society. It aims to pursue excellence towards creating manpower with high degree of intellectual professional and cultural development to meet the National and Global challenges.The college encourages extension activities to promote institutional Social responsibity and social justice contributing to good citizenship,service orientation and holistic development of students
