Society Rock Ridge High School
National High School Mathematics Honor Society
Thank you for your interest in joining the Mu Alpha Theta Honor Society at Rock Ridge High School. The Mu Alpha Theta Honor Society organization was formed in our school for the purposes of fostering interest, developing strong scholarship, and promoting the enjoyment of mathematics. The society is officially a National High School and a Two-Year College Mathematics Honor Society that was formed in 1957 and thus we will follow the general guidelines already set. However, we will, as a Chapter, make independent regulations and activities.
To Join the Society:
Students must go through an application process. Students must be eligible to apply to the society. The requirements are as follows:
Student must have completed Algebra 2
Student must have an overall GPA of 3.0 and an overall math GPA of 3.5
Students who are accepted into the Rock Ridge Chapter of Mu Alpha Theta will be required to remain in academic good standing and provide service to others and the chapter. Mu Alpha Theta is an HONOR society and therefore all members are expected to maintain an honorable character at all times. ANY honor-related offense will be grounds for immediate dismissal. Members are expected to participate in the activities of the chapter and uphold the philosophy of the society. These activities include, but are not limited to:
Attendance at monthly meetings
Members must attend all meetings. Two unexcused absences may result in exclusion from the society. If you will not be able to attend a meeting you must contact one of the advisors at least 24 hours in advance.
Members must fill 10 service hours per school year. At least 5 of the hours must be peer tutoring hours. Service hours must support the organization or mathematics in some way. Hours must be approved and signed off on by an RRHS staff member. Hours may not overlap with other service hours for which you are getting credit.
Yearly Mu Alpha Theta membership fee of $15. Checks need to be made out to Rock Ridge High School and have “Mu Alpha Theta” written in the memo line of the check. Do not turn in checks until you have been accepted into the organization.
Other activities to be decided upon by the club membership.
Complete the application form and return to Mrs. Curran in room 1212 or Mrs. O’Brien in room 1210 no later than 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 21, 2014. Do not turn in a check for dues until you find out if you have been accepted.
The Mu Alpha Theta sponsors will review applications and students will be notified of their acceptance or non-acceptance into the Honor Society in writing by Friday, October 24, 2014.
Criterion for acceptance include the following:
Overall GPA of 3.0
Mathematics GPA of 3.5
Commitment to uphold the philosophy of the society, which is “to stimulate interest in mathematics by providing public recognition of superior mathematical scholarship and by promoting various mathematical activities.”
Commitment to provide service to the Rock Ridge Community in the field of mathematics.
There will be an induction ceremony for those accepted into the Mu Alpha Theta Society. The date of the ceremony will be announced in November. The date of the induction ceremony is likely to be in May once members have met the service hour commitment. All members are expected to attend the induction ceremony.
