Course Description and Objectives: This course is designed to prepare students’ for college level reading intensive classes by providing exposure and practice in reading and writing expository, narrative, and persuasive texts.  Topics include applying critical reading skills for organizing, analyzing, and retaining material and developing written work appropriate to audience, purpose, and situation.  The course integrates fundamental reading skills:  comprehension, vocabulary and rate with foundational skills in writing a variety of academic essays.  The class will combine lecture, collaborative groups, and individualized instruction in order for students to participate in a variety of activities focused on learning from textbooks and other sources. Students Learning Outcomes

Upon the successful completion of this course, students will:

  • Locate explicit textual information, draw complex inferences, and describe, analyze, and evaluate the information within and across multiple texts of varying lengths.

  • Comprehend and use vocabulary effectively in oral communication, reading, and writing.

  • Identify and analyze the audience, purpose, and message across a variety of texts.

  • Compose a variety of texts that demonstrate reading comprehension, clear focus, logical development of ideas, and use of appropriate language that advance the writer’s purpose.

  • Determine and use effective approaches and rhetorical strategies for given reading and writing situations.

  • Generate ideas and gather information relevant to the topic and purpose, incorporating the ideas and words of other writers in student writing using established strategies.

  • Evaluate relevance and quality of ideas and information in recognizing, formulating, and developing a claim.

  • Compose a variety of texts that demonstrate clear focus, the logical development of ideas in well-organized paragraphs, and the use of appropriate language that advances the author’s purpose.

  • Develop and use effective reading and revision strategies to strengthen the writer’s ability to compose college-level writing assignments.

  • Recognize and apply the conventions of Standard English in reading and writing.

  • Edit writing for proper voice, tense, and syntax, assuring that is conforms to Standard English, when appropriate.

Blackboard: This course will be web-enhanced.  You will find a portal to UNIV 0400.02, on the Blackboard site.  It is imperative that you log in on a daily basis for class communication, journal writing, assignments, and testing.  

Attendance Requirements of Developmental Courses:

(Absences, tardiness, and late work)

A strict attendance policy will be followed. Students are expected to be on time for class and stay until the end of class. TSI liable students who fail to meet attendance requirements and completion of course work will be withdrawn from all classes and receive a grade of “U”.  

Student Contribution:

  1. Since you must be in class in order to be able to participate in the learning activities, your presence is important.  Each student is expected to take an active role in the class, and assume a self-directed approach to completing class work and homework.

  2. After two absences, I will submit an excessive absence to the Early Alert Committee.  On the fourth absence, I reserve the right to request the student’s withdrawal because of excessive absences.  Each tardy count for ½ absences.

  3. Assignments are late if they are not turned in by the end of class period; late or make-up work will not be accepted, unless the student makes prior arrangements with the instructor before the due date.

Course Grades:

  1. All developmental courses shall be graded as pass/fail and students receiving a “Z” or “U” in the class will continue to register for developmental education each term until a score of “S” is achieved or has retaken and passed the placement exam. To earn a passing grade in this course, the student must complete all assigned work, tests, and lab, and score 70 or better to receive an “S”.

  • Reading & Writing Evaluations   

  • Four essays

    • Utilizing a variety of organizational patterns or purposes

    • Grammar/editing/proofreading activities


  • Major exams

    • Mid-Term

    • (Which cover the student learning objectives for developmental reading and writing).

    • Final Exam

  • Classroom attendance and participation, and some short, unannounced quizzes on reading and lecture material, and lab

  • Man

Grading Scale

C or better (75% or better)= (S) Satisfactory

C- or D (60-74%) =  (Z) Borderline

F (0-59%) = (U) Unsatisfactory
*All papers submitted must be written legibly in pen or typed double-spaced on 12 pt. Times New Roman font.  If written in ink, it must be in black or blue ink.  Pencil is not acceptable and will not be graded.  Handwritten on white loose-leaf notebook paper or typed on typing paper. All writing assignments will be in MLA/APA style.
Course Policies

  • Group activities will frequently be used in class.  You are expected to participate with your group members and to use constructive criticism so that all class members can benefit from each other’s point.

  • You will complete impromptu (unplanned) assignments in class and will receive an accumulative check and a written comment which will be useful to you.

  • Language used in the class will be appropriate for the classroom.

  • Absolutely no cell phones allowed in class.

Academic Integrity:  Students are responsible for adhering to a certain standard of behavior when it comes to dishonest and plagiarism.  A student who engages in scholastic dishonesty which includes, but not limited to cheating, plagiarism, and collusion will receive an “F” for this course.  Academic dishonesty in unacceptable and will not be tolerated.  All persons involved in academic dishonesty will be disciplined in accordance with University regulations and procedures.  For complete information on UTPB student conduct and disciplinary procedures consult the University Handbook at:
