How To Write a Higher History Essay

Step One – Analyse the Question

Step Two – Plan Your Essay

  • Any essay should always have the
  • following:
  • Introduction
  • Set your essay in context with 2-3 sentences of background information.
  • Outline the question which your essay will answer.
  • Outline the main factors you will consider.

Step Two – Plan Your Essay

  • Main Section
  • Deal with the main factors in a logical order.
  • Write a short paragraph for each of your main factors.
  • Use relevant facts/examples
  • Spell historical terms/names correctly
  • Use quotations to illustrate points or to show awareness of differing historical opinions.
  • Link the evidence for each factor back to the main question.

Step Two – Plan Your Essay

  • Conclusion
  • Summarise the main points in your answer.
  • Directly answer the question
  • Indicate what is the most significant or important evidence which helped you to reach your conclusion.

Other Points to Note:

  • Do not write in the first person ‘I think’
  • Write in paragraphs – do not use sub-headings.
  • Use your own words as much as possible.
