Aims & Objectives




  1. To encourage students to extend the focus of their university education to include significant reflections on moral issues.

  2. To introduce students to major moral principles and relevant moral theories.

(3) To familiarize students with major areas of experience and discussion in business and society which require ethical considerations.

(4) To enable students to apply moral theories to actual business and social problems.











Course description/ Content

The course begins with a broad exploration of ethics and moral theory, and will then proceed to explore the moral dimensions and social responsibilities of business activity in modern society. The examination and detailed discussion of various moral issues and dilemmas confronting individuals involved in business decisions will connect the world of business and commerce with ethical deliberation and theory.

Course Intended Learning outcomes (CILOs)

By the end of the course, students should be able to:

Articulate three ethical approaches to moral problems, including utilitarian, deontological, and virtue ethics approaches.

CILO 2

Explain situations in business and social contexts which require moral understanding and ethical reasoning.

CILO 3

Apply ethical principles to specific moral dilemmas which arise in business and social contexts.

CILO 4

Formulate critical responses to ethical decisions made by others, providing their own assessment of the ethical soundness of those judgments.

Through small group discussions, in class debates and answers to guiding questions related to assigned reading students will apply different ethical approaches to specific situations in business and social contexts.

Midterm quiz

Short essay questions focusing on proper use of utilitarian, deontological and virtue ethics approaches will be written out, responding to moral problems and dilemmas which arise in business settings.

Final examination

A comprehensive examination consisting of long essay questions will assess students’ understanding of different ethical approaches and their insightful application to problematic cases, including critical reflections on the limits of certain approaches
