English-style diet 'could save 4,000' in rest of UK

  • Eating like the English could save 4,000 lives a year in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, a study claims.

  • People in England eat more fruit and vegetables and less salt and fat, reducing heart disease and some cancers, say Oxford University experts. A tax on fatty and salty foods and subsidies on fruit and vegetables could help close the diet divide, they add.

  • The British Heart Foundation says the study shows inequalities in the nations that must be addressed by authorities. Death rates for heart disease and cancer are higher in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland than in England, according to official figures.

  • Diet is known to be an important factor. Last year researchers estimated that more than 30,000 lives a year would be saved if everyone in the UK followed dietary guidelines on fat, salt, fibre, and fruit and vegetables.

  • Now, the same experts - from the Department of Public Health at the University of Oxford - have turned their attention to differences within the UK. They looked at whether deaths from heart disease, stroke and 10 cancers linked with poor diet could be prevented in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, if everyone switched to the typical English diet. They say the diet in England is far from perfect - but should be achievable in other UK countries.

  • Hamburger tax : Lead researcher Dr Peter Scarborough of the Health Promotion Research Group said: "The chief dietary factor that is driving this mortality gap is fruit and vegetables. Consumption of fruit and vegetables in Scotland is around 12% lower than in England, and consumption in Northern Ireland is about 20% lower than in England. Consumption levels in Wales are similar. Other important factors are salt and saturated fat consumption, which are lower in England than in Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland."

  • The researchers believe one way to tackle the "mortality gap" is to bring in food taxes. Denmark recently introduced a tax on foods high in saturated fat, while other countries are toying with the idea of taxing fizzy drinks or high-calorie foods.

  • Dr Scarborough said: "Junk food taxes and subsidies of fruit and veg could be a very important tool in addressing health inequalities in the UK."

Prince Harry naked, Vegas photos published by Sun

The Sun has become the first British newspaper to publish the photos of a naked Prince Harry taken in Las Vegas. Its owner News International said it was making the move despite warnings from the Royal Family's lawyers that it would be an invasion of his privacy. The Sun said the images were widely available around the world, its readers had a right to see them and freedom of the press was being tested.

The pictures emerged from a private weekend the prince spent with friends. The two photos of the prince and a naked woman in a hotel room are believed to have been taken on a camera phone last Friday. They first appeared on US website TMZ earlier this week.

David Dinsmore, managing editor of the Sun, said the paper had thought "long and hard" about publication and added: "For us this is about the freedom of the press. "This is about the ludicrous situation where a picture can be seen by hundreds of millions of people around the world on the internet but can't be seen in the nation's favourite paper read by eight million people every day. In an editorial, the newspaper said the pictures represented a crucial test of Britain's free press.

St James's Palace had contacted the Press Complaints Commission (PCC) on Wednesday because it said it had concerns about the 27-year-old prince's privacy being intruded upon, in breach of the editors' code of practice. The palace said it had heard a number of UK newspapers were considering using the pictures, although none had until now.

In reaction to the Sun's decision, a palace spokesman said: "We have made our views on Prince Harry's privacy known. Newspapers regulate themselves, so the publication of the photographs is ultimately a decision for editors to make. We have no further comment to make either on the publication of the photographs or on the story itself concerning Prince Harry's private holiday in Las Vegas."

TMZ reported that Harry had been pictured in a group playing "strip billiards". The Sun said in a statement that in publishing the photos it was not making any moral judgement about the prince's activities. It said: "He often sails close to the wind for a royal - but he's 27, single and a soldier. We like him.”

(to sail close to the wind = gewaagde dingen doen)

    Opdracht:

    Instructies:

    • Je essay moet tussen de 350 en 450 woorden tellen;

    • schrijf het aantal woorden in de linkerbovenhoek.

    • Je mag een eigen woordenboek (Ne-Eng) gebruiken.

    • Delen uit de tekst overschrijven is niet toegestaan.

    • Markeer alinea’s door regels open te laten tussen elke alinea.

    • Schrijf met blauwe of zwarte pen.

    • Overschrijven is niet nodig als je correcties netjes zijn.

    Succes!

Harry photos: Is it normal to drink and end up naked?

    By Keith Moore BBC News

Photos of Prince Harry naked during a reported game of strip billiards - published on a US gossip website - have been defended as being merely "letting off steam". Anybody who has been out in a British city around 02:00 on a Friday or Saturday will be aware that there are some people who respond to alcohol consumption by "mooning" or otherwise removing clothing - something which can potentially lead to arrest. It does seem to be common, particularly among people who do difficult and dangerous work, like soldiers and medical students, who normally have to be in such control of their behaviour. So how normal is it for young people to take their clothes off when they have been drinking?

Fox espouses* a theory that it's the British and American attitude to alcohol that is to blame for disinhibited** behaviour, rather than the chemical reactions of alcohol in the body. "It provides the perfect excuse, because people can blame their behaviour on the drink. They can say, 'It was the drink talking' or 'I was not myself'." It's that loss of inhibitions*** that Dr Glenn Wilson, who is a professor of psychology at Gresham College in London, says is the main function of social drinking.

The nudity, he says, "all feels a bit naughty, a deliberate breach of taboo. Some people will have a drink or a cigarette because it seems like a slightly naughty thing to do. I would put this in that category.” Far from being a moral collapse, Wilson says that the prince's behaviour is pretty much keeping in character. "It implies that people who drink are more extroverted and relaxed kind of persons - the opposite to uptight. It does display an extrovert trait in Harry but I think we all knew that about him anyway."

But while Fox argues that getting naked in front of other people after drinking is not an uncommon thing among young British men, freelance men's magazine journalist Piers Hernu disagrees. "It's quite unusual," he says. "Most people return home at the end of the night fully clothed, they're not missing a cardigan or a shoe and certainly not any trousers or pants. When we're drunk, bad ideas seem quite good - there's definitely a loss of quality control."

    (*espouses = steunt / **disinhibited = ongeremd / *** inhibitions = remmingen)
