If the drop is too short, death comes through gradual strangulation; if too long, the jerk of the rope rips the head off. History has shown that capital punishment methods are painful, the application of the death penalty is at times racist, and innocent people are sometimes executed. Thesis/Claim America’s death penalty not only violates the 8th amendment’s ban on cruel and unusual punishment, #1 the methods are often applied unfairly, #2 usage is barbaric for a civilized democratic society, and in #3 states that have the death penalty the evidence shows this form of punishment does not deter crime. TS/claim: #1 America’s methods of execution can all be considered inhuman and savagely brutal. OPINION Evidence: During an electric chair execution in Florida in 1990, inmate Jesse Tafero’s head bobbed while ashes fell from it for four minutes (King 45). Cite your evidence! Analysis: These incidences show a lack of respect for human life. OPINION Analysis: Treating people inhumanly, regardless of their criminal behavior, does not justify this gruesome, cannibalistic torture. OPINION Evidence: During a botched lethal injection in Texas, it took over 24 minutes to kill a man (Douglas 8). Cite your evidence! Analysis: The abolition of the death penalty is associated with a civilized society. “This shows we actually do mean business when we say we have reverence for life." said Archbishop Desmond Tutu. QUOTE Analysis: A person should never have to be put to death with humiliation and severe degradation. OPINION CS: Life in prison with out the possibility of parole can be considered a death sentence, living in the inside of a cell for the rest of a criminal's life is painful. When a life is taken because of criminal behavior such as murder, society should never lower its standards of justice. The value of "ANY" human life, even that of a murderer is sacred. MY OPINION, no repeating TS

  • Each body paragraph must connect to your thesis details/support at all times.

Sample rebuttal (3rd paragraph in essay)

  • Sample rebuttal (3rd paragraph in essay)
  • (TS) Supporters of the death penalty claim that capital punishment is quick, painless and extremely effective; these supporters are against the perpetrator who acted in a violent manner and believe this person doesn’t deserve to live. (Evidence supports thesis/claim)According to a poll in Texas in 1999, 55% of deaths by lethal injection were not administered quickly. The average time it took for the convicted to actually die was well over 4 minutes. (Deathpenalty.org) (Analysis supports details) This shows that the process is not as quick as many believe. A four-minute death is not, by anyone’s standards painless, in fact it is quite the opposite because allowing a person to suffer needlessly is inhuman. (Evidence supports thesis/claim) Amendment 8 in the Bill of Rights, states “that no punishment shall be cruel or unusual.” (Constitution of United States, Amendment 8). (Analysis supports details)No matter the offender, no matter the crime, there is no way that putting someone to death whether it be by lethal injection or firing squad is retribution for the crime. (CS) Capital punishment in the United States under a democratic form of government allows criminals to at least be shown the decency and value of life even if the person stays in a 4 by 4 jail cell forever. Barbaric methods used are not justified regardless of the crime.

Concluding your paper Without repeating any sentences in your intro or body paragraphs, think what overall message you want to leave the reader with. A social significance. “A Call To Action” Passionately make 2-3 statements regarding your side only.

  • To sum up, in a civilized society, people do not have to act barbaric when punishing the guilty perpetrator. Human beings can rise above a senseless act such as murder, to show that the ideals of a democratic system far out way a punishment using the exact cruel method that the murderer exhibited. Sitting in jail, locked up for the rest of one’s days, with no quality of life what so ever is a much more dignified way for our country to prevent further crimes like murder from happening. Incarceration without the possibility of parole is a clear message that can be given to anyone that takes the life of an innocent person.
