Essay Competitions and Prizes

What are essay competitions and prizes?

As you progress through your medical training and career there will be numerous opportunities to compete for medical prizes and awards. Such competitions are generally held by medical research, training, specialty or associated bodies, or by charities or educational institutions with an interest in particular aspects of medicine.

Awards and prizes differ in topic and type of award as well as in the level of work and original research required. The task to be undertaken by participants is almost always research followed by submission of an essay or written report. Winning participants are also often given the opportunity to present their findings at a conference and some will be supported in publication.

What are the benefits?

The benefits of taking part in competitions of this nature are many. Simply taking part gives you the opportunity to:

  • Research and write about an aspect of medicine which interests you

  • Gain valuable research experience

  • Publish or present your research - original research and written papers can lead to publications whether you win a prize or not

For those who are lucky enough to win an award there are additional benefits:

  • National prizes and awards can help you stand out from your peers

  • Winners will often be given the opportunity to publish their papers – which can lead to additional points on your foundation programme application

  • Winners will almost always be given a financial award

Where can you find out more?

Finding out about the prizes and awards for which you can compete is not always easy. Some prizes will be well advertised through your medical school, others will require more initiative to find. The following list details a wide range of prizes and awards which were available to students in the academic year 2014. The majority of these awards will be available for students in the next academic year, and there are likely to be others not listed here. To research opportunities visit the websites shown on the following list, also talk to tutors in your department and conduct detailed web searches. If you have an interest in a specific area of medicine, research organisations involved in this area and see if they offer any prizes or awards to medical students.

Here is a short list containing a number of links to various different Royal Societies/Colleges' prizes and awards pages that are updated throughout the year.
