Essay #2: Higher Education
Write a 3-4 page essay in response to one of the topics listed below. You will write this essay using the articles/essays from the Norton Reader as reference. Include a “Works Cited” page at the end of your essay, as well as parenthetical citations throughout your paper. As always, begin with a strong thesis statement and include logical reasons and supporting examples to make your case. There are no specific requirements on how many references and quotations you include in your paper, but you should demonstrate that you are able to sustain your discussion with a variety of relevant quotations and support.
Should all high school students (and even elementary school students) be encouraged to go to college? Also, should schools create curriculum with the basic philosophy that all students CAN and WILL attend college? Is a college education for all students a realistic goal?
Which is better—a college education that encompasses a wide range of courses across many disciplines (liberal arts), or a college education which is focused on one specific major and one discipline?
