Course Description

This course provides an introduction to the community supervision practices of probation and parole, with an emphasis on Texas practices. Topics will include the historical development of parole and probation, qualifications and duties of parole and probation officers in various jurisdictions, current theories guiding parole/probation supervision, and parole/probation supervision of specialized caseloads, including sex offenders, mentally ill persons, and substance abusers. During the course, students will be exposed to real world application through guest lectures, case studies, empirical research, and other experiences. Through discussion, written assignments, and presentations, students will have the opportunity to offer their own opinions about best practices in parole and probation and how these practices will shape the future of community supervision.
