Chapter 5 Real-Life Case Study Activity
Are Professional Athletes Overpaid???
Focus: Free agency has significantly increased the earnings potential of professional

athletes; at the same time, however, such high salaries have led to increases in ticket prices and the perception that the best teams will always be those with the most money.

Introduction: Do you believe that current salaries for professional athletes are

justified on the basis of supply and demand, and why/ why not?

Now discuss whether salaries should be based instead on the importance of the job to society?

  • Next, read page 121 from your textbook (see attached copy). After reading the article, answer the two questions following the reading. Please answer completely and word-process your responses.

  • Now, select six (6) professional athletes, no more than two from the same professional sport. Find out the current salary of each athlete and that athlete’s salary over the past two (2) OR next two (2) seasons at the professional/ “major league” level. [Do not include income from endorsements, USE BASE SALARY]. Use the following websites or your own to assist you.

Make an Excel spreadsheet using all of your data. Analyze the data…are there any trends? Why might an athlete’s salary decrease the following season?, etc.
Major League Baseball:
http://www.spotrac.com/mlb/rankings/
National Football League:
http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/rankings/base/
National Basketball Association:
http://www.spotrac.com/nba/rankings/base/
National Hockey League:
http://www.spotrac.com/nba/rankings/base/
(For player or team information, use the drop down menu on the upper right side)

  • Now, select four (4) professional teams, no more than two from the same professional sport. Find out:

  • the current payroll of each team

  • the team’s payroll for the previous OR next three (3) years

Use the websites listed on the front page or your own to assist you.

Use the “Total Payroll” (MLB), “Total All” (NFL), or “Total Cap” (NBA & NHL)
Use this information to make an graph (using Excel or Word) for each team showing the:

Be sure to completely label your graphs. Analyze the data…are there any trends? Why might a team’s payroll decrease the following season?, etc.

  • Next, TEAM MARKETING REPORT…select two (2) professional teams from each of the

four major professional sports (baseball, football, hockey, and basketball). Find out the

current average price for each of the items listed below using the website listed:

https://www.teammarketing.com
(Then click on the “FAN COST INDEX” icon on the left side and proceed from there)

          • Average ticket price

          • Smallest-sized soda

          • Smallest-sized beer

          • Hot dog

          • Parking

          • Hat/ cap

  • Also, using the same website, find out the Fan Cost Index (FCI) for each of the teams

researched above. The FCI tracks the cost of attendance for a family of four. The FCI

includes the items listed above: four average-price tickets; four small soft drinks; two small

beers; four hot dogs; parking; and two adult-size caps.
Use this information to make an Excel spreadsheet for current prices for each of the above items. Analyze the data…are there any trends? Why might a team’s average ticket price be higher than other teams? Does location of the team matter? Does the size (seating capacity) of the stadium/ arena matter? Does length of season matter?, etc.

  • Next, find the TOTAL HOME ATTENDANCE figures of eight (8) professional teams over the last four (4) seasons, for which data is available, only two teams from the same professional sport. Use the following websites to assist you or your own websites.

DO NOT USE THE DATA FOR THE CURRENT SEASON
Create another Excel spreadsheet AND graph (Excel or Word). Do a separate graph for each team. Analyze the data…are there any trends? Why might a one team’s attendance total be more in one sport than another? Does the size (seating capacity) of the stadium/ arena matter? Does length of season matter?, etc.
Major League Baseball:
http://www.espn.com/mlb/attendance
National Football League:
http://www.espn.com/nfl/attendance
National Basketball Association:
http://www.espn.com/nba/attendance
National Hockey League:
http://www.espn.com/nhl/attendance

  • Finally, based on your research above answer the following in a one-page, word-processed essay:

    • Are professional athletes overpaid, underpaid, or paid the right amount?

    • Are fans paying too much, too little, or paying what they should to attend a professional sporting event?

    • Are the teams with the most money usually the best teams?

[In writing your essay please discuss and keep in mind the laws of supply and demand.

Also, be sure to explain and support your view to EACH question with at least two

examples. Keep in mind the trends you noticed with each activity above as well.]
