Now we go to further in the first canto and there are very nice prayers again by Bhishma pitamah. As soon as you come to this authority, he is one of the mahajans. There are twelve mahajanas.
svayambhūr nāradaḥśambhuḥ kumāraḥ kapilo manuḥ
prahlādo janako bhīṣmo balir vaiyāsakir vayam
dvādaśaite vijānīmo dharmaṁ bhāgavataṁ bhaṭāḥ
guhyaṁ viśuddhaṁ durbodhaṁ yaṁ jñātvāmṛtam aśnute [Lord Brahma, Bhagavan Narada, Lord Siva, the four Kumaras, Lord Kapila [the son of Devahuti], Svayambhuva Manu, Prahlada Maharaja, Janaka Maharaja, Grandfather Bhisma, Bali Maharaja, Sukadeva Gosvami and I myself know the real religious principle. My dear servants, this transcendental religious principle, which is known as bhagavata-dharma, or surrender unto the Supreme Lord and love for Him, is uncontaminated by the material modes of nature. It is very confidential and difficult for ordinary human beings to understand, but if by chance one fortunately understands it, he is immediately liberated, and thus he returns home, back to Godhead.] (SB 6.3.20-21)
Svayambhu, Narada, Shambhu these are three in the first line. Svayambhu means Brahma, self born. [Hindi] Brahma phela mahajan hain. Aur ye mahajan ka matalabh ye hain inko sabh pata hain aur ye bhagavan ke ananya bhakta hain. Isme phela number Brahma ka ata hain. Narada, doosara, Shambhu – Shiva bhagavan. Aur ananya bhakta hone se inko kahi parajay nahi hain. Ye hamesha safal hote rahate hain.
[Brahma is the first mahajana. And what this Mahajana means is that they know everything and they are the undeviated devotees of Bhagavan. Of these mahajanas Brahma name comes first. Secondly Narada, then Shambhu, Shiva Bhagavan and because they are unflinching devotees of the Lord they are never defeated. They keep succeeding.]
Krishneti naam, Kṛṣṇa iti naam yasya, vaachi, pravartate How our problems can bring us closer to Kṛṣṇa?
[Hindi] Kṛṣṇa ka naam jiska jivha per hain. “Krishneti naam yasya vaachi pravartate / Labhostesham jivastesham” usko hamesh labh hota hain. Inka hamesha jai hota hain. Please prakruti ke museebatonse himaat na hare. Himatt rakhiye. Himatt se museebat jaise aati hain waise nikal jati hai. agamapayino ’nityas [BG 2.14]– iska nature hain. Museebatonka swabav hain ye. Ye aagam - ye aati hain aur jo aane wala hai wo jata hi hain. Aap yaha aaye ho, aap jane hi wale ho. Jo aata hain o jatahi hain. Hamaara janma huha hain hume mrutyu hai he. Nobody… aapko million dollars ho, accha makhan ho, sab family acchi ho, you can not survive long. Jo aata hain O hamesha jata hain. Ye iska nature hain. To tu gabraya na bhil kul gabraya na, bhagavan ka naam bada de isme, bhagavan ka sharan, smarana bada do aap bhool ja hoge museebatonko. Museebat hai nahi hain aise ho jayege. Ye practical instruction hain shastronki. Doosara kuch na kare jitene jyada museebatho utana jyada Kṛṣṇa ke taraf jayein.
[Whoever’s has Kṛṣṇa’s names on the tongue, he is always benefitted. Krishneti naam, Kṛṣṇa iti naam yasya, vaachi, pravartate, labhas tesam jayas tesam. They are always gain profit. They are always glorified. Please, do not get disheartened by the miseries of material nature. Keep courage. With courage, as the miseries come, they pass away.
mātrā-sparśās tu kaunteya śītoṣṇa-sukha-duḥkha-dāḥ
āgamāpāyino 'nityās tāḿs titikṣasva bhārata [O son of Kunti, the nonpermanent appearance of happiness and distress, and their disappearance in due course, are like the appearance and disappearance of winter and summer seasons. They arise from sense perception, O scion of Bharata, and one must learn to tolerate them without being disturbed.](BG 2.14)
āgamāpāyino – that is its nature. That is the nature of problems. They aagam, they come. And whatever comes necessarily goes away. You have come here, you are about to go away. Whatever comes always goes. We have been born, death is certainly there. Nobody (is spared)… you may have million dollars, good house, good family, (still) you cannot survive long. What ever comes always goes. This is its nature. So not get nervous. Don’t get nervous at all. Increase your rememberance of Bhagavan. Increase your shelter and rememberance unto Bhagavan and you will forget the problems. It will so happen the problems are there or not it won’t matter to you. This is the practical instruction from the shastras. Don’t do anything else. As the problems increase, that much you go towards Kṛṣṇa.]
[Hindi] Jab Kaliya naag ne phani bigada diyata Jamuna ka, aur phani pee kar gopa baal aur gaay sab margaye the, to unhone Kṛṣṇa ne taraf dhyan diya ta. Ki bhai hamareko yehi bachane wala hain hamesha Kṛṣṇa per nirbhar rehete the. Krsnaji ne aa kar nag ka hatya kar diya tha. Kyonki unka ekh hi aasarata tha.
[When Kaliya nag had spoiled the water of Yamuna, and after drinking water cowherd boys and cows had died, then they (residents of vraja) had meditated on Krsna, thinking “He is only going to save us” Always they were dependent on Kṛṣṇa. Kṛṣṇa had come and killed the Kaliya because they had Kṛṣṇa as the only one shelter.]
Story: Kṛṣṇa lifts Govardan hill to protect His devotees
[Hindi] To Indra ne gusse ho gaya ta Kya kiya ta bhagavan ne, O yagna bandh kar diya tha. Indra yagna, ye Indra yagna karte the Nanda Maharaj etc. To unko poocha Kṛṣṇa ji ne “kya bath chali hain, ki bahut badi tayyarian chali”. To kaha “Indra ka yagna hain usko shanti kari do, wo barish deta hain.” To Bhagavan ne kaha hain “isse to govardhan ki pooja kare hum govardhan hill ke pooja kare isse humara faiyda hoga.” Inhone yagna bandh karvadiya. Indra bade gussa hogaya hain. Aur issne bahut bada badal samvartak badal kehete hain usko, o badal ka naam saamvartak hain. jab ye pralay hone wala hote hain na jab ye baadal aata hain. Ye chod diya usne, chod diya to ittani barish raat din hone lage to sab inaundate hogaya phani se. Gaayein marne lagi, gopi marne lage kyonki inka ashre ek hi tha Kṛṣṇa. Ye bage Kṛṣṇa ke paas. Kṛṣṇa dekha Indra ko sabak sikana padane padega, immediately he took out and pick up the Govardhan hill on His last finger of the left hand. Ye Kṛṣṇa ke reet hain. Girivaradhari. Bhakto ki dukh door karne keliye ye hai. Ye giri bhi utha lete hain. To Gopoko esa laga ke chota bacche saat saal ka ungli tang hojaye ge, ittana bhaar, to lakade rakane lage sabhi. Unko aisa laga unko ham help kar rahein hain. Humare vaisa dasha hote hain. Kyonki o balak hain, bala Kṛṣṇa.
[What had Bhagavan done when when Indra was very angry? He has stopped Indra yagna. Nanda Maharaj used to do Indra yagna. So Kṛṣṇa asked him (Nanda maharaj) “What is going on. Lot of preperations are going on.” So he (Nanda Maharaj) said: “This is Indra’s yagna. If we pacify him then he provides rain.” Then Bhagavan said: “It is better if we worship Govardhana, then we will be benefitted.” Thus he stopped the yagna. Indra got very angry. And he sent very big cloud, it is called samvartak cloud, that cloud is named samvartak. When there is catastrophe, then that cloud comes. So when he released this cloud, there was so much rain that everying was inundated with water. Cows started dying, Gopis started dying. Because they had only one shelter, Kṛṣṇa, they ran to Kṛṣṇa. Kṛṣṇa saw that Indra needed to be taught a lesson. Immediately he took out and pick up the Govardhana hill on His last finger of the left hand. This is Kṛṣṇa’s way, Girivardhari. In order to dispel the miseries of His devotees, He lifts even a mountain. So, the cowherd boys thought that He is a seven year old small boy, His finger will get tired, lifting so much weight, they started propping with their sticks, thinking they are helping Him. We also have similar situation. Because He is a small child, baby Kṛṣṇa. ]
What is the solution to our problems?
[Hindi] Bala Kṛṣṇa ka bajan bada accha hota hain.
vatasya patrasya pute shayanam balam mukundam manasa smarami [The one who keeps His lotus like feet on his lotus like mouth with His lotus like hand, i think of that Balamukundam who sleeps on the vata pathra leaf] (Sri Balamukundam Ashtakam Text#1)
[Hindi] Bas yehi karne ki reet hain. Jitana jyada museebatho – balam mukhundam manasa smarame. Koyi bade museebat nahi hain inkeliye. Ye giriko pakadakar rakh sakta hain inka rakshan kaliye raat din pakad ke rakha. How merciful He is? Ittina merciful Kṛṣṇa ko choda kar hum kaha bagein? Kahi Australia aagaya hain, yaha bhi museebat hain. Fiji chale jayo vaha bhi bahut jyada museebat hain, America jao vaha bhi museebat hain aur takleef bhi hain. Mein humesha chocha ta America bilkul heaven hain, vaha bhi hume dekh liya o plane ka plane sabh high rise building mein chela jata hain. Kahin kahin nahi reha sakte hum. Ye Kṛṣṇa ki iccha ho tohi raksha karta hain. Aur vohi baat Bhishma dev ne humesha jindagi me dekiye.
[That’s it, this is the way. However much you have problems - balam mukhundam manasa smarami. There is no problem too big for him. He can lift a mountain for their protection and kept it that way day and night. How merciful He is? Where can we run away from Him leaving behind merciful Krsna? We come to Australia, there are problems here too. Go to Fiji, there also there is lot of problems. Go to America there also there is all the more trouble. I always thought America is like heaven. There also, I have seen, planes crash into high rise buildings. Nowhere, we can remain (with problems). If Kṛṣṇa desires then only we are protected. And that we can see in Bhishma deva’s life.]
Story: Santanu conditional marriage with Ganga
[Hindi] Bhishma dev ke bare mein hum jante hain o Ganga putra Bishma dev. Santanu ye Romeo hai na. Romeo Juliat suna nahi aap, ye Romeo humesha Yamuna kinare me gumta rehata, bahut bada raja tha. Sundar sharir ta javaan ta. Aur ghum raha ta. Koyi macchi ayi yo pakad loon. Usme Ganga dekhi usko. Aur Ganga ko madat karni thi ye Vasusko. Inko shaap mila ta aapko pruthvi per janm lena padega. to ye bade gabaragaye. To inhone vinatee ki bhai “please jara mild saap dedo.” Inko saap mild kar diya gaya “koye bhi aap ko janm lena pade pur aapko maar dega to aapko uddaar ho jayega.” Kyon inhone gaay churayee thee, aur doosare vasuvone inki madat ke thi. To ye saab Vasuon ko janma lena hi hain pruthvi per o shaap tha. To jab he inko janm hi lena hain dekhe konsi ma haam kare jo hamare ko paida hote hi maar dale. Inho ne dekha Ganga barabar hain. Ye kardege sab. To Ganga ji ke paas gaye aur kaha “humare mother ho ja. Please humare ko marna hain. Janma to lena hain, immediately hume marna hain.” “Accha” kabool Karliya Ganga maaye ne. Niche hagaye to ye Romeo goomraha ta idhar udhar. Aur pahale bhi, heavenly planets me bhi, ye jaa sakta ta. To isko dekh kar, e to pani pani hogaya sundar stri dikhi. You know, Bhāgavatam me shlokh hain ke butter aur fire, makhan aur agni, dono saat nahi reha sakte hain. Fire aajaye to makhan aise hi pigal jata hain [Maharaj makes fun] bait jata hain neeche. Aap koun se isaab mein ho kya hain aap ki dasha mujhe pata nahi hain. Magar Bhāgavatam me aisa kaha hain, aap to bade acche aadmi ho, aap makhan jaisa pigal nahi jate. Dekhiye saat sou passengers hote hain ye aeroplane mein, ek do beautiful stewardes ho na …. [break]
[We know about Bhishmadeva that he was son of Ganges. Satanu the Romeo; you must have heard about Romeo and Juliet. He always roamed on the banks of Yamuna. He was a very big king. He had a beautiful and youthful body. He was wandering to catch some “fish”. He saw Ganga. Ganga had to help the Vasus. They were cursed that they will have to take birth o earth and they were very worried. So they pleaded that “Please give us mild curse” They were given mild curse “Whoever will give birth to you and then kills you then you will be emancipated”, because they had stolen cow and other Vasus had helped him. So these Vasus had to take birth on earth, this was the curse. So when they had to take birth, then they searching which mother they should have who would kill them right after birth. So they found that Ganga is suitable choice. She will be able to do all this. So they went to Ganga and said: “Please help us. Please become our mother. Please, we have to die immediately after taking birth”. “Very well” agreed Ganga mother. When she came down, the Romeo was wandering there, walking. And before, they could go to the heavenly planets. So when he saw her beauty, he got attracted. You know, in Bhāgavatam there is a verse that butter and fire cannot stay together. When there is fire, butter melts. [mimics] … and settles down. What is your state, I don’t know. However, this is what is said in Bhāgavatam. You are very good person, you don’t melt like butter. Look, if there are seven hundred passengers in aeroplane and if there is one or two beautiful stewardess, [everyone starts looking.]
[Hindi] Ganga ko dekh kar usko aisa laga ki patni mill jaye to achcha hai. Proposal rakh diya ki bhai “Shaadi karoge hamare saath?” Ganga ko bhi chahiye tha, usko bhi pasand tha, to shadi ho gayi. Baad mein Ganga ne ye sharatein rakhin ki "main kuon huin ye na puchna. Aur main kya kar rahi huin ye kabhi na puchna. Kuch kahoge to main gusse ho kar to ussi samein chod kar chali jaungee." To ye to lampat tha, isne saab kabool kar liya. “Nai, nai, kabhi nahin puchunga aur gusse bhi nahin hounga.” Aur jab pahela bachha hua to usne le ja kar pheka diya Ganga mein. Dusra hua to wahi dasha, teesra hua to wahi dasha…aise saat hue. Saton ko usne Ganga mein pheka diya. Usne kaisebi control kar liya apane ko. Usse pata tha ki main puchunga to ye chale jayegi. Aur aathwa Vasu tha, wo vishwa ka janma tha. To, khas gai curane ka kaam, ye Vasu se hua tha. To ye Vasu ko marna nahin tha. Isko yahin rahna tha zindagi bitane ke liye. To ye pata nahin tha usko. Jab aathwan hua to, ready ho kar karne lagi. Karne lagi to raha nahin gaya isse. “To kuon hai boleto rakshasi. To kyon mere bachche ko marr rahi hai”. Wo gusse hote hi wo khatam ho gaya kaam uska apna. “Ab chali main Ye bechari …Tereko akkal nahin thi, ye to rahane wala tha, aur ham aaram se rahate…isko bada karke…par ab toone patience dhiraj kho diya hai, ab main chali ja rahi huin”
[After looking at Ganga he felt like marrying her. He proposed her for marriage.Ganga also liked her and they got married.Later, Ganga put her terms of marriage that “Don’t ever ask me: who am I, what I am doing or speak angrily to me. If you do then I’ll leave you.” He was a fool, he agreed to all conditions. “No, no, I won’t ever ask you anything or get angry at you” When the first child was born, then she threw that child in the Ganges. Same happened with second and then again with third…this happened seven times. All seven were thrown in the Ganges. Somehow he was able to control himself. He knew that if he asked anything then she will leave him. The eight Vasu was born of Vishva. This Vasu was supposed to perform the pastime of stealing the cows, this he did not know. When the eight child was born, she got ready to throw the child. This Shantanu could no longer tolerate and said: “Who are you, you demon. Why are you killing my child?” As soon as he got angry her work was over. “Now I am leaving.” She told: “You did not have the intelligence…this child was destined to live...and we could have lived together and raised the child. However, now you have lost your patience, now I am leaving.”]
Story: Bhisma early life
[Hindi] To dekhiye, pahale se, Bhism ke jivan mein badi takleef rahi hai janma ke saath he. Hamare yahan baccha hai Dwarka main, uske mata ne janma hote hi choda diya. Usko pata hi nahi laga. Aura koi padosi ne usko bada kiya. Ab wo keheta hai ki mata jab mereko ye kar sakti hai, to dusra koun dhoka nahi dega mujhe duniya main. Isse behetar hai ki man Kṛṣṇa ke asare raha januin. Ye jivon ki dasha hai dekhiye.
[So you see that from the very beginning, the life of Bhisma was full of miseries right from birth. In Dwaraka a child was left by her mother. The child did not know, and was raised by neighbor. Now he says “If my own mother can do this to me, then why another cannot cheat me as well? It is better that I surrender to Kṛṣṇa.” This is the state of living entities.] [Hindi] Inhoinne bada acchha gaya hai (Bhisma ne), prarthna mein. Ye pahale yahi kahate hain. Aur hamari bhi dasha aisi hai. Ki mati hai hamari, Intelligence. Intelligence ka swabhava hota hai, thinking, feeling and willing. Ham think karte hain. Ham feel karna chahate hain, aur hamari kuch marjee bhi hoti hai. Ye sab tino iske kartavya hain, budhih ke. To ye kahate hain, ki meri mati itni ghumi hai, to please ab aisa kar, to kripa karke, ab mere ant ka samaya aa gaya hai. Meri mati tere charan ke siwa aur kahin na ghume. Itni kripa kar mere upar.
[Bhisma has very nicely sung and prayed. He says this at first. And this is our state of our intelligence. Intelligence’s nature is thinking, feeling and willing. We think. We want to feel. And we have our free will. These are the three workings of intelligence. So he says, that “My intelligence is so lost. So, please have mercy and so such that in the last moment of my life, my intelligence is fixed at your lotus feet and nowhere else. Please have this mercy upon me.”]
[Hindi] Aur dehiye, inki mati ka jab ham sochate hain, to hamara dimag kaam nahin karta hai. Janma jote hi Ganga isko le kar chali gayi. Aur Ganga ne kaha tha Santanu ko ki main isko ready kar dungi, aur jab ye javan hoga, sab sikh lega to main isse wapas de jaungi. Santanu kutch kar nahi saka. Bhaga iske pichhe … mafi mangi … aur Ganga chali gayi iske paas se. [When we think of their intelligence then our mind stops working. Soon after birth Ganga left with the child Bhism. And she had told Santanu that she will prepare the child and when he will grow into a youth after learning everything, then I’ll return him. Santanu could not do anything. Ran after her… apologized to her…however Ganga walked away.] [Hindi] To pahale pita ka sukh nahin mila isko, janma se. To mati iski ghumte rahi… ki bhai pita kaisa hoga…uske paas kyon hahin rahene diya..ye kyon mere ko le gayi… ye durdasha ye balak ki thi. Phir wahan education hua … sab hua…phir Ganga ek din le aayi niche…
[So, at first he did not get his father’s love since birth. So his intelligence remained lost, thinking … “How will be his father be?…Why she did not leave with him? Why she is taking me away?” This was the sad state of the child. Then he completed his education there…then Ganga one day brought him back.]
[Hindi] Santanu wahan loiter karta hi tha. To unhoone dekha bada accha hai… is tarah se band chhod kar, aur Ganga ka prabhava rook diya tha…To Santanu kahane laga, mera bhi bachha itna bada ho gaya hoga…ye aisa hi hoga… Phir Gangaji ne aa kar, aur usko Shantanu ko saup diya. Bahut accha anand hua isko…Ganga chali gayi wapas… kintu yuvaraj mil gaya isko. Iska naam Devavrata tha. To jab ye aaya, to Shantanu itna happy ho gaya, aur sabhi praja jana bhi bahut happy go gaye… Dekhiye mati isti… ab pita mila to mata chali gayi.
[Santanu used to loiter near the banks. He saw that how wonderfully he had stopped the flow of Ganges by creating a dam. So Santanu started saying “My child also must be as grown up. He must be like this youth” Then Ganga came andgave back his son in Santanu’s custody. Santanu was very happy. Ganga returned however, he got the prince. His name was Devavrata. When Devavrata came, then Shantanu was very happy and so were his subjects. Look at his fate… when he got father then mother walked away…]
How tolerance and constant rememberance of the Lord helps us?
[Hindi] Aur jab ye jhagada hota hai jab kutubh mein. Ki koi divorce ka sawal aata hai, ya kuch hota hai… the most suffering paryt is the children. Ho sake, to hamme bhagavan ki prarthana karni chahiye, ki hamme sahan shakti de. Aaj kal sahan shakti badi kam ho gayi hai. Aur usse ye jode bilkul tikte nahin hain, aur isme bacchon ki badi durdasha hoti hai.
[When there is familial fight…when there is a question of divorce or something like that… then the most suffering part is the children. If possible, we should pray to God, that we get the power to tolerate. Nowadays, the power to tolerate has decreased a lot. And because of that these couples don’t stick together and in that the children are the very negatively impacted.] [Hindi] Aur hamara jo swabhava hota hai, ki stri bina hamm ji nahi sakte. Stri ka bhi swabhava hota hai ki aadmi ke bina wo ji nahin sakti, par kaise-vaise hriday par patthar rakhana padta hai, aur dono alag hojate hain, kuch ho jata hai. Vedic sanskriti ka kehena ye hai, ki ho sake, jab ye din na aaye, to accha hai. Kintu complicated situations hain. Abhi anek prakar ke anya sawal hain. Pata nahin, hamare jiwan mein, hamare bhagya mein kya likha hai. Na karma hota hai, wo bhi karma padta hai. Kintu kuch bhi ho, ye kalyug mein ek suvidha Bhagawan ne kar di hai, ki koi bhi paristithi ho aapki, usme Bhagawan ka naam na chode.
[And our nature is such that we cannot live without women. Women also, by nature cannot live without men. However, somehow, we have to brace ourselves and both of them have to separate or something. Vedic culture says that as far as possible, it is good that such a thing does not happen. However there are complicated situations. There are many different types of questions. We don’t know what is in our life’s fate. What we don’t have to do, that also we have to do. However, whatever happens in this Kaliyuga, there is one benefit God has provided us, that whatever situation you are in, don’t stop taking the name of God.]
[Hindi] Niya smaran bhagavan ka chahiye. Yadi aap saath ho to badi acchi baat hai. There is nothing like that. That is a silly thing. Ek na cal sake, to aap nichit kar lo, ki bhai ek nahin chala, ab doosra aur koi nahin chalega.
[Constant rememberance of God is required. If you are together then it is very good. There is nothing like that. However, if you cannot stay together, then don’t worry, that’s all we can say. However, do this much that without God, don’t pass a single moment. Otherwise what will happen is … one will break, go for second. Second will break, go for third. Third will break, go for fourth. That is a silly thing. If one (marriage) does not last, then you make a determination, one did not last, so now, no other will last.]
By changing the partners you can never be happy. [Hindi] Ek mein nahin chala, usme shiksha lelo, ki ye nahin chala, ab hamara vanaprastha hai. Main choda diya ab saab. Jo bhi bacche hain. Hamare paas hain, tumhare paas hain, unko bada karo, aur unke liye prarthana karo. Aur raat din bhagavan mein mann laga lo. Ye shiksha hai.
[If one did not last, learn from that experience that one did not last, now its time for retirement. Leave all the stuff. Whatever children you have, whether with me or them, raise them, and pray for them. And day and night remember God, this we can learn.]
Story: Devavrata declared king by Shantanu
[Hindi] Phir itna hone ke baad jab Santanu raji ho gaya to usne ye ghoshna kar di ki ab mere baad raja ye Devavrata ho jayega. To praja badi raji ho gayi ki aisa juva hai achcha. Ye raja ho jai to ham sukhi ho jayenge. Bahut acchcha saab ne sahmati de dee, aur nischit ho gaya ki Shantanu ke baad ye raja hone wala hai. Aur bada accha jivan tha. Shanti santosh tha. Aur sabhi accha tha. Gangaji ka putra tha. Koi buri aadat koi nahi thi. Aur saab aadatein acchi thi, praja ko bada sukh tha. Kintu Kṛṣṇa ki yojana aur kuch thi. Jaisa maine kaha, ye Romeo ghumne ke liye hamesha Yamuna ke kinare par jata tha. Ek bar ghumte ghumte Satyavati dikhi isko. Phir wo prem mein pad gaya dekhtehi. “Aha kya hua, main tere prem mein pad gaya.” Bechara aur atak gaya, phir wo sote hue puchne laga, “too mere saath shadi karegi?”“Mera to baap hai, wo jaisa kahega waisa main karungi”
[Then after all this, Shantanu agreed and declared that after him Devavrata will be king. The subjects also agreed thinking that if such a qualified person becomes king, then we will all become happy. Very happily everyone gave their approval, and this was determined that after Shantanu, Devavrata will become the king. And the life was very good. There was peace and happiness and everything was good. Ganga’s son was there who had no bad habits. He has all good habits. The subjects were very happy. However, Kṛṣṇa had another plan. As I had told you, this Romeo used to wander in the banks of river Yamuna. Once while wandering he saw Satyavati. He again fell in love at first sight. “Oh what happened, I fell in love with you.” Poor fellow got stuck again with her beauty and proposed “Will you marry me?” “I have a father. I’ll do as he says”, she said.]
[Hindi] Dehiye, Bhisma ko bilkul shaanti thee, ye Devavrata ko bahut shaanti thi ki main mere pita ke paas huin. Pita ke baad main raja hone wala huin. Bilkul ananda mein reh raha tho wo. Mati jara sthir thi. Par dus stitha matir, ye oscillate hone ko lagi aur, pita ke gadbad se. Isliye main keheta huin, ki ek baar jo na chale to that’s it, cut t short. Dusra na karein kabhi
To ye jab hua, to aur mati iski vichilit ho gayi. Bhisma ke piche aur vichilit ho gayi. Phir usne pucha Satyavati ko, satyavati ne kaha “mera to pita hai”. Ye itna adhir ho gaya shaadi karne ke liye, ki wo uske pita ke paas pahuncha. To usne kaha, “tere jaisa raja, mere ladki ko milega to badi acchi baat hai, par meri ek sharat hai, ki isse jo putra honge wohi raja honge.” Ye dusri musibat. Ab issko bahut badi musibat aa gayi. Ki isne already isne ghosna kar di thi, he has already declared, ki bhai, after me our Devavrata will be the king.
[Look, Devavrata was fully peaceful that “I am with my father. After my father I will become king.” He was in full bliss. Intelligence was little stable. Duh sthitha matir, mind started oscillating because of trouble caused by father. That is why I keep saying that if it does not last once, then that’s it, cut it short. Don’t remarry. So when that happened then Bhisma’s intelligence for disturbed all the more, related to Bhism. Then he asked Satyavati. Then Satyavati said: “I have father”. Santanu got so impatient for getting married, that he reached her father. Her father said: “If a king like yours will get married to my daughter then it is a very good thing, however, I have a condition that her son will become king.” This was another problem. Now Santanu got a very big problem. He had already declared that “After me our Devavrata will be the king.”] So now again the big question came, that if he marries her, Devavrata has to step down.
[Hindi] To ab kya karien? To bechara wo vaise hi aa gaya, bada kasht hi rehene laga. To Bhism ne dekha ki baap ko kuch dukh hai, to Bhism ne pucha ki bhai, “apko kya takleef hai? Sabhi accha hai. Mere jaisa yuva putra hai. Praja saab obeying hai. Aapko kya dhukh kya hai.”Phir bechara keh nahin saka, sukch na sukch baat banana laga ye Santanu. "dekh" bole, "to ek hi ladka hai mujhe, aur tere ko bhi military shiksha, bada priya hai. Aur kahin kuch ho jaye, Bhagavan na kare, to hamare yahan to koi raja hi nahin rahega."Ye baat ka koi thikana nahin tha. Kintu lusty desires thi uski, ye Santanu ki. Phir Bhisma samjha nahin. Phir Devavrata samjha nahin, to usne idhar udhar minister ko puncha. To jo elder minister the, unhonne bataya bhai, iska dard ye hai.
[What to do now? So poor fellow (Santanu) just came back, and started living in pain. When Bhism saw that his father has some sorrow, he asked, “What is you pain point? All is well. You have a prince like me. The subjects are all obeying. What is the reason of your sorrow?” However, poor fellow (Santanu) could not tell, started making up something.Santanu told: “Look, you are my only son and you also love military training. God forbid, if something happens to you, then we will have no king at all.” There was no surety that what he told was correct. However, Santanu had lusty desires. Then, Devavrata could not understand. Then he asked the ministers. Then one elderly minister told what was the king suffering for.] [Hindi] Ye duniya mein hamesha yaad rakhaein, jiska pett dukhta hai wo sarr batata hai. Usko punche kya ho raha hai bhai, “sarr dukh raha hai.”, aur dukhta hai pett mein. Aur jiska sarr dukhta hai wo pett batata hai. Hamesha yahan ulti batein yahan hoti hain. To isko bechare ko pata nahin laga, phir wo minister ne kahah: “ki bhai, ye to kisi ke prema mein pad gaya hai, uski shaadi nahin ho rahi hai, ye baat hai, ki to step down ho ja, to kuch pata chale”
[Always remember, in this world, if someone’s stomach is in pain, he/she will tell it’s the head. Ask him what is happening, “Head is paining.” But actually pain is in stomach. And one who’s head is in pain, he tells stomach. Always, here people say the opposite (of what they intend). Then poor fellow did not understand, the minister said: “He is love with somebody, he is not getting married, is the matter. You step down, then we will find out.”] [Hindi] To Devavrata ko bechare ko bahut daya aaye, ki mere liye mere pitaji dukhi hain, to mera pharz hai ki main door kar doin inka dukh, to ye swayam uske paas gaya, Saytavati ke pita ke paas. Wahan pucha ki bhai kya baat hai, shaadi karwa do. Bole, tu, “you are the difficulty. Musibat to teri hai.”, “Kya baat hai?” “Because you are going to be king after him. I’ll marry my daughter to him. I want the issue of my daughter to be the king.”
[So Devavrata felt pity that “For me my father is sad, so it is my duty that I dispel his sorrow.” Then he himself went to Satyavati’s father. There he asked: “What is the matter. Perform the marriage.” Her father told: “You are the difficulty.” “What is the matter?” “This is your problem because you are going to be king after him. I’ll marry my daughter to him. I want the issue of my daughter to be the king.”] [Hindi] Baas itna hi, to main pratigya karta huin, main chod deta huin mera haq, aur iske jo putra honge, wo raja honge.
To isne thodi dera vichar kiya ki ye to bada acchha hai, (bole) pratiga, too to mann gaya hai par bhavishya main tere jo bachche honge, wo nahin manenge, to wo jhagada karenge. Devavrata socha ye baat barabar hai, mere bachche manate hain ya nahin hai. Itna siyana. Kintu ye sab plan Kṛṣṇa ka tha. Usne Devavrata ne bhi dekha, ki Bhagavan ki marji hai, aur inhonne bahut bari pratiyna kar lee, ki main shaadi hi nahin karunga.
[“That’s all… I make a pledge that I leave my right, and agree that her son will be the king”, said Devavrata. Then Satyavati’s father thought for a while, and said “This is a good pledge Devavrata has agreed upon. However, in future Devavrata will have children and they will not agree and fight.” Devavrata thought this is a valid thought that my children will agree or not in future. However all this was Krsna’s plan. Devavrata also saw the same way, and he took a very big pledge that “I’ll never marry”.] How to have stable intelligence in the midst of sorrows?
[Hindi] Dekhiye kitni mati, kitni idhar udhar jane lagi. Ek ghari mein raja hone wala tha, dusri dhari mein bilkul chhut gaya saab. Aur pita kaho ya kya kaho. Ye dusstitha matihi isko kehete hain. Hamari mati kabhi sthir nahin reha sakti hai. Aur unhone kal hi kaha, ki mato sthir karne ke liye, Dukha udwigna karo, to mati sthir rahegi, sukheshu vigatha sprihah. Sukh ki iccha na karo, ye bhagawan ne kaha hai. Dukheshu unudwigna manah, dukh kita bhi aa pare, to Kunti ne aur manga hai.
[Look how the intelligence gets strayed. In one moment he was the King, and in another he lost everything. You blame it on father or whatever, this is called unstable intelligence. Our intelligence never stays stable and to stabilize the intelligence.
duhkhesv anudvigna-manah sukhesu vigata-sprhah
vita-raga-bhaya-krodhah sthita-dhir munir ucyate [One who is not disturbed in spite of the threefold miseries, who is not elated when there is happiness, and who is free from attachment, fear and anger, is called a sage of steady mind.](BG 2.56)
duhkhesv anudvigna-manah, duhkhesv anudvigna-manah. If you tolerate the sorrows then intelligence will remain stable, don’t be too interested in happiness.Don’t desire for pleasure. This Bhagavan has told dukheshu unudwigna manah. However much sorrow falls upon us… Kunti has asked for more!]
vipadah santu tah sasvat tatra tatra jagad-guro
bhavato darsanam yat syad apunar bhava-darsanam [I wish that all those calamities would happen again and again so that we could see You again and again, for seeing You means that we will no longer see repeated births and deaths.] (SB 1.8.25)
[Hindi] Kaha.. Jagat Guru, hamare upar aneka musibat aati rahein. Ham teri yaad karte rahein. Dukh aane dijiye. Dukh se ghabarayiye na. Bhagavan ka smaran badha dijiye. Yehi ek reet hai.
[She said, “Jagat Guru (Kṛṣṇa), let all misfortune fall upon us. Let me just keep remembering you (O Lord)” Don’t get disheartened with sorrows. Increase your remembrance of Kṛṣṇa. This is the only way.]
[Hindi] Sukh ki iccha na karo. Ye duniya mein sukh hai hi nahin. Material life mein sukh hai hi nahin. Ham ye prison mein pade hain. Prison mein kahan se sukh hota hai. To ye asha na karo, to mati sthir rahegi. Vaisehi, isne Devrata, bechare ne man mana liya. Ki chalo bhagavan ki marji hai, jo hua hai … dekhiye mati idhar udhar jane lagi iski aur
[Don’t desire for pleasure. In this world there is no pleasure. In this material life there is no pleasure. We are in this prison. In this prison, where there is pleasure? If we do not hope for it, then the intelligence will remain stable. That is how, poor Devarata, convinced his mind, that this has happened by God’s wish. Look how his intelligence went hither-thither.]
[Hindi] Phir shaadi ho gayi iski, phir isko do teen bacche, Vicitravirya aur dusre hue, unke aur katha alag hai, magar ye mati ki baat hai, Bhism ki, aur inke rakshan ke liye, unko ghar chodna nahin hua. Itni pratigya lene ke baad bhi, itni badi musibatein thee, Kauravon ki, Pandawon ki, aur anya sabhi ki, ye unko dhyana rakhane ke liye unko wahin rehena pada. Aur hamesh yeh raj karobar mein anek jagah par unki mati idhar udhar jati rahi.
[Then Shantanu got married, then is got two sons, Vichitravirya and other, that is another story. But this is the matter of intelligence. Bhisma protected them and they did not have to leave home. Even after his solemn pledge, there were big calamities, for Kauravas and Pandavas and the rest such that he had to stay there for taking care of them and their kingdom. And in pursuance of his duties in his kingdom, his intelligence was diverted here and there.]
Prayers by Bhismadeva
[Hindi] To ye prarthana karte hain isme, ki meri mati kaise bhi sudhar jaye, aur ek hi prarthana hai ye Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam mein, gyarah (11) sloka ki, ki jo bade acche raag mein hai. Ye ham gate hain na…
[We pray, that my intelligence somehow should get improved. And there is only one prayer in Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, eleven slokas, in very nice raga. This we sing.] [Maharaji singing Damodar Astakam first verse and then Hare Kṛṣṇa Mahamanta]
[To the Supreme Lord, whose form is the embodiment of eternal existence, knowledge, and bliss, whose shark-shaped earrings are swinging to and fro, who is beautifully shining in the divine realm of Gokula, who I (due to the offense of breaking the pot of yogurt that His mother was churning into butter and then stealing the butter that was kept hanging from a swing) is quickly running from the wooden grinding mortar in fear of mother Yasoda, but who has been caught from behind by her who ran after Him with greater speed--to that Supreme Lord, Sri Damodara, I offer my humble obeisances.](Damodar Astakam Verse 1)
Hare Kṛṣṇa Hare Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa Hare Hare
Hare Rāma Hare Rāma Rāma Rāma Hare Hare (2) [Maharji singing the verse SB 1.9.32 and mahamantra twice]
[Hindi] Yehi raga me hai dekhiye, bahut sundar raga hai.
[This verse is in the same raga, it is a very beautiful raga….]
sva-sukham upagate kvacid vihartuḿ prakṛtim upeyuṣi yad-bhava-pravāhaḥ [Bhismadeva said: Let me now invest my thinking, feeling and willing, which were so long engaged in different subjects and occupational duties, in the all-powerful Lord Sri Krsna. He is always self-satisfied, but sometimes, being the leader of the devotees, He enjoys transcendental pleasure by descending on the material world, although from Him only the material world is created.] (SB 1.9.32)
Hare Kṛṣṇa Hare Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa Hare Hare
Hare Rāma Hare Rāma Rāma Rāma Hare Hare
Read the translation. [Translation is read by a devotee and repeated by Maharaj and everyone]
[Hindi] Dekhiye, ye matih ka sawal hai, aur matih ke liye ye shiksha hamne ye leni hai issme se, ki hamara mann idhar udhar jara na bhage. Hamm musibat mein aa jatein hain, to mann idhar udhar bhagne lagg jata hai. Bahut barr musibatein itni kadi hoti hai, ki usmein hamari shradhha bhi kam ho jati hai. Ye Kṛṣṇa hai, ye American puchate hain abhi ki “Is God there ?” Aare bhai, itna paap aapne kiya, jab Bhagavan tha? Doosron ko marr diya, jab Bhagavan tha ki nahin. Khud mar gaye to puch rahe ho, ki bhagawan hai?
[Look, this is matter of intelligence and for intelligence we need to take this lesson from this, that my mind does not wander hither and thither. We fall into trouble, then the mind starts wandering here and there. Many times the troubles are so strong that we start reducing our respect and faith. Is Kṛṣṇa there? These Americans ask now. “Is God there?” “O brother, when you committed so many sins, then God was there? When you killed others, then God was there or not? You yourself are dying and then you are asking whether God is there?”] mattaḥ parataraḿ nānyat kiñcid asti dhanañjaya
mayi sarvam idaḿ protaḿ sūtre maṇi-gaṇā iva [O conquerer of wealth [Arjuna], there is no Truth superior to Me. Everything rests upon Me, as pearls are strung on a thread.](BG 7.7)
[Hindi] Kehete hain Bhagava Arjun ko, ki mere siva yahan kutch nahin hai. Aur inka ye vachan ye satya hai. Ham mane ya na mane wo hai hi. Aur jo nahin manata hai, unko bhi dayalu hone se, usko bhi hava detein hain, usko bhi pani detein hain, usko bhi khana detein hain, sabhi detein hain yeh. Itne dayalu hain.
[Bhagavan says to Arjuna that besides me there is nothing. And His words are true, whether we agree or not, He is (everything). And the person who does no agree, on that person also, being kind, He gives air, water and food and everything. So merciful He is.]
[Hindi] To in dayalu ko chodd kar, hamari matih ham kahan lagayein, ye Puruṣottama māsa mein ye hamein samaj lena hai. Ki Bhisma ka udhaharan lijiye please. Inhonnein bahut kasht sahein hain, itna bada aadmi ho kar, mahajan ho kar bhi. Jitne bhi mahan purusa ho gaye hain, hamesha inke jivan mein kast raha hai. Ke sab chodna badi aasaan baat nahin hai. Aur usme bhi lagan na karna ye bahut bahaduri ki baat hai.
[Upon leaving such as merciful one, where should one fix one’s intelligence? This one should please understand in this Puruṣottama māsa by taking the example of Bhism. He is suffered lot of pains inspite of being such a big Mahajan. However great people have become, always their life has remained painful. Renouncing all this is not easy and on apart from that not marrying, that is very brave act.] Nahin. To samay se aapki shaadi ho jaani chahiye.
[If you are thinking that “I have to do like this (become celibate)”, then you have to find out one thing in your mind, that how much prema (love) you have towards God and scriptures. Only then you can live without women. If this love (prema) is not there, then don’t dream that “I’ll be able to do this.” No. Then you should get married in time.]
[Hindi] Aur yadi real vairagya hai bhakti ke hisaab se, to then with these scriptures you can pass on the life, very easily. Ye Bhagavan ke shastron se, ek hi life nahi, aneka jivan aap bita sakte ho isme se. 18,000 sloka isme hai, 700 Bhagavat Gita mein hai, 100,000 Ramayana/Mahabharat mein hai. Bahut hai. Bhagavan ke bare mein janne ke liye aur prachar karne ke liye badi avashyakta hai. Aur jinhonne ye bhog kar liya hai, aur vanaprashta stage mein jo hain, inhone, please, ab mann ko mana lena hai. Aur ghar mein rahein, maybe chhodna possible na ho to.Kintu prachar karya ke siva, inhonne kuch aur nahin karna hai. Aur pracharya karya karne ke liye, nirantar adhyayana chahiye. Ye please karein, ye Puruṣottama māsa mein, aap aapki dasho dhond lijiye, aur kaise kya karna hai wo tai kar lijiye. Aur Bhism pitahah, Aur Narada, Swayambhu, Prahlad, Bhism, Arjuna, inse abhi shiksha le le-ligiye.
[And if you have real renunciation according to bhakti, then with these scriptures you can pass on your life very easily. Through the scriptures of God, not only one life, you can spend many lifetimes from this. There are 18,000 slokas (in Bhāgavatam), 700 in Bhagavad-gītā, 100,000 in Ramayana and Mahabharata. That’s a lot. There is a great need to know about God and preach about Him and those who have already experienced, and are now in vanaprashta stage, now you please have to convince your mind. If it is not possible to leave, then stay at home. However, besides preaching activity, nothing else you should do. For doing the preaching activity, one needs to continuously study. In this Puruṣottama māsa, you please find out your situation, and decide what to do when and how and learn lessons from Grandfather Bhisma, Narada, Swayambhu, Prahlad and Arjuna.]
Hare Kṛṣṇa Hare Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa Hare Hare

[Hindi] Bhagavan ko ham prarthana karein, ki hamein aur jivit rakhaein, aur kal aisa hi samay dein, milein hum.
[Let us all pray to the Lord (Bhagavan) that He keeps us alive more, and that He gives more such time tomorrow and we meet.]
