AP Essay Template Worksheet

Writing

General: Now it is time to write your essay. Remember to be direct, use simple clear language, make sure that everything you discuss supports your thesis(your thesis was developed on the worksheet side), explain how everything you discuss is in support of your thesis, and stay organized.

Thesis Paragraph:

  1. Have a brief opening sentence that outlines the topic of the essay. You may even just find a way to restate the prompt:

  2. The second sentence should be your thesis statement. Refer back to your worksheet to your answer to the prompt and your reason why you believe this answer is correct. Make the first part of your thesis statement your answer to the prompt and the second part the reason(s) you believe your answer is correct

    1. Remember use simple, clear language

    2. Don’t fluff

    3. Don’t ever use I or my

Body Paragraphs:

  1. Each Topic Area that you came up with on your worksheet is going to be the Topic of each paragraph of your essay. Every thing you talk about in the paragraph has to relate to the TOPIC!!!! Also everything you talk about in the paragraph must be used to prove your Topic is correct.

    1. Opening sentence: This must clearly outline what the major topic of the paragraph is going to be.

      1. Examples of typical topic areas(these are just typical, but not mandatory)

        1. Political

        2. Social

        3. Economic

        4. Governmental

      2. Examples of first sentences: The topic area is in bold

        1. The political differences between the Northern and Southern colonies was affected by the ability of southern colonies to develop cash crops on large plantations.

        2. The colonists had attempted to unite for defensive purposes since the 17th Century.

        3. The economic system of colonial America often left frontiersmen like the Paxton Boys and Regulators fighting for survival:

    2. The rest of the paragraph needs to be sentences that introduce facts that provide proof that your thesis is correct as it relates to the topic area. Facts should be introduced in 2-3 sentence groups(Call them fact strands). The first sentence introduces the fact, and the second sentence explains how it proves your thesis is correct.

      1. Example: Due to the introduction of cash crops like rice, indigo, and tobacco into the southern economy in the 17th Century large plantations dominated much of each colony preventing large urban areas from developing in a majority of the colony.. Thus the Political structure of the Southern colonies revolved around colonial legislatures more than local governments which were more prevalent in the North due to the fact that most people lived on small farms in developing towns because the weather was more conducive to small farming than cash crop farming

    3. In some cases you may have 2-3 large paragraphs that have 5-6(or more) fact strands. In other cases you might have many smaller paragraphs containing 1-2 fact strands. Either is fine, what is most important is that everything you discuss in your paragraph relates to the topic sentence of the paragraph.

Conclusion Paragraph:

        1. The Conclusion paragraph should be a short 2-3 sentence summary of your thesis.
