SFU - 2015/2016 Admission Requirements for BC High Schools Admission to SFU is competitive. In the past, the average for admission has ranged from 80% to 90%, depending on the program. All students must write the English 12 provincial exam and meet BC high school graduation requirements. Information on Distributed Learning courses: DL courses (i.e. distance learning/online learning courses) can be used to meet your admission requirements as long as the course is 100% complete by April 30th. Your DL provider must report your grade to the ministry of Education to ensure SFU receives your official grade electronically in May. DL courses completed after April 30 can be used to meet course pre-requisites but will not be used for admission purposes.
If you repeat an approved grade 11 or 12 course the higher course mark will be used for admission, either your first course attempt or your new mark. (Note that enrollment in first-year writing intensive courses require higher grades than admission grades. See their FAQs) 1. Completion of the last three years of full-time secondary education in English in Canada or another country where the principal language of instruction is English. A minimum blended grade of 60% or C in one of English 12, English Literature 12 or English 12 First Peoples, or their equivalents, is required.
2. Completion of the last four years of full-time secondary education in English at a recognized International school where the principal language of instruction in the country is not English. A minimum grade of C or 60% in senior level English is required. 3. Completion of IB English A1/A2 or English Literature and Performance (HL or SL) with a minimum grade of 3. 4. Completion of a three unit transferable English course or certified W (writing intensive) course with a minimum grade of C- 5. Completion of the IELTS (International English Language Testing System) with a minimum overall score of 6.5 with no part less than 6.0. 6. Completion of TOEFL IBT (Test of English as a Foreign language internet based test) with an overall score of 88 or better with a minimum score of 20 in each of the four components (listening, speaking, writing, reading)
Of the following ways: 1. A minimum grade of 60% or C in the equivalents in a senior level math course or pre-calculus 2. A minimum score of 3 in IB HL or SL math studies; 3. A minimum D grade in GCE A/AS/O level math 4. A grade of C- or better in a 3-unit math or certified Q (quantitative) course that transfers to SFU (for college and university transfer students). NOTE: A minimum grade of 70% is required in one of the acceptable Math courses used for admission in order to enroll directly in Q courses. For more information see new admission standards. Additional Requirements: Within the first three terms at SFU, students must either score at least 20/30 in our Q Placement Test, or achieve at least a C grade in the Foundations of Analytical and Quantitative Reasoning course (FAN X99-4) Diverse Qualifications Admission – More than Grades Of course, we want academically well-qualified students. But we’re also interested in those who meet our minimum admissions standards and have demonstrated commitment or excellence in other endeavors, or who have succeeded in their studies in spite of difficult circumstances. Through our Diverse Qualifications program we select up to 10% of new students, taking these achievements into account. To be considered under this policy, you must meet the minimum admission average (67% for secondary school applicants or 2.00 for post-secondary transfer applicants). You must also the English Language requirement and the Quantitative and Analytical skills requirement as detailed below. Note: If you have been required to withdraw from a recognized university, you are not eligible to apply under diverse Qualifications. Prospective student athletes applying under the diverse Qualifications process should be aware that admission to the university under diverse Qualifications does not guarantee eligibility to play as a varsity athlete. English Language Admissions Standard (please refer to calendar for a comprehensive list of the nine ways to meet the English requirement for UBC). Final grade of 70% in either Grade 11 or Grade 12 English (or equivalent course, including provincial examination where applicable) Graduation from high school with a minimum average of 70% (or higher for many programs) Completion of specific high school courses depending on where you’re applying from and what program(s) you’re applying to. DISTRIBUTED LEARNING COURSES: If you are currently taking, or plan to take Distributed Learning course (e.g, online courses, distance learning, or courses at another school) to meet your admission requirements, include these courses in the list of courses you will complete this year in the academic profile section of the UBC application, and do not provide an in-progress grade. Completion dates for Distributed Learning Courses:
If you wish to use your Distributed Learning course in the calculation of your competitive admission average, the course MUST be 100% complete by February 01, 2016 and your Distributed Learning provider submit the final grade to the Ministry of Education so that it appears on your Ministry of Education Student Secure Web in time for you to self-report these grades in March/April. Distributed learning courses completed by June 30, 2016 can be used to meet pre-requisites but will not be used in the calculation of your competitive admission average. Submitting your grades In the online application, you will be asked to provide some details about your current and most recent academics, including: Courses you are currently taking or will complete during your final year of high school; and Grades you’ve earned in Grade 11 and Grade 12 courses already completed. Please note that for all currently attending BC high school applicants who have not yet graduated, your admission decisions will be based on a combination of the grades you self-report in March/April and your Personal Profile. After you have submitted your online application, you will be contacted with specific instructions on your next steps so please make sure to watch your email. Grades for completed courses When you are prompted to enter your grades for completed courses, use only final grades that are documented on your online Student Secure Web EdAccess account or your high school record. This means you may want to have your report card from the previous year handy when you complete the online application. Please not that all course and grade information submitted is always verified against official records from the BC Ministry of Education. *1 a language other than English at the Grade 12 level is recommended for all students planning to complete a Bachelor of Arts degree. Students without a language 12 must take a language as part of their university studies. What UBC means by “APPROVED GRADE 12 COURSES” Applicants to UBC are required to write the BC Provincial Exams that are needed for graduation. This requirement may be satisfied with one of Principles of Mathematics 11, Pre-Calculus 11, IB Math Studies, or foundations of Mathematics 12. Grade 11 Language courses at the beginner’s level are not accepted for admission. If you entered the BC school system after grade 9, you may be eligible for exemption from the Grade 11 Language course requirement. To apply for exemption, UBC needs a written statement from the school principal or counsellor indicating your date and grade of entry into the BC school system and UBC reference number. Statements must be emailed to language11.waiver@ubc.ca by February 15, 2016 If you have a diagnosed learning disability, you may be eligible for exemption from the Grade 11 Language requirement. UVIC - Victoria www.uvic.ca ADMISSIONS - BRITISH COLUMBIA (includes YUKON): YEAR ONE The academic qualifications for consideration from secondary school is high school graduation with a competitive admission average. The admission average is calculated using all required grade 12 courses. Each faculty determines their cutoff and it changes on an annual basis due to limits on enrollment and the competitiveness of certain programs. The actual cutoffs for the previous year are posted on the website and generally range from 75-90%. Students graduating prior to June 2008 were required to write provincial examinations for all courses being used to meet admission requirements if an exam was offered for that course. Students graduating in June 2008 and beyond, must have written provincial examinations in any subject where it is mandatory in order to meet BC Graduation Program requirements. When a student elects to write an optional grade 12 provincial exam, the higher of the school mark or the blended grade (school mark and provincial exam result combined) will be used in the admission average calculation.

POST-SECONDARY CREDENTIALS: Citation: Individual Courses that you take, usually anywhere up to 6 months in length, provides the opportunity for continuing education, upgrading of skills. Career objective and gain valuable workplace skills Diploma: 2 Year prescribed program: (Max 60 credits), prepares students for entry-level positions, students have a more enhanced knowledge and are better prepared for advancement. These credits are usually transferable toward the Degree program.
Students are required to complete a broad range of course offerings balanced with in-depth study in specific disciplines. Students who hold an Associate Degree are admitted to the University with priority over other transfer students.
