In your opinion, is globalization among the causes of the increasing incidence of divorce, crime, and drug abuse in Asia? Why or Why not?

Globalization has brought various effects not only in Asia but around the world. For some countries, globalization is beneficial but in some, it may not. Globalization has exposed various cultures to the world it introduced, impacted, and influenced one's culture over the other. Though globalization has many positive aspects for both deviations and developed nation in interconnecting the people and international firm helps cross borders and help in the economic development of a nation it also has some drawbacks. It affects the culture of the country. The major effect of globalization is manifested in the loss of one's cultural identity. Due to technological improvement and innovations, people get a lot of knowledge through telecasts, the internet of their own that makes them gain much positive information as well as, negative information, which sometimes led them to wrong decisions and options like the use of drugs and involvement in criminal activities that does not only changes and damages oneself but also the family. The impact of globalization on the developing countries often found in Asia is far worse; with no way to counter the negative power globalization has on their society, extreme poverty, malnourishment, drug abuse, violent and organized crime, divorce, and sexually transmitted diseases are on the rise. People around the world are learning how others live than the other, so people like those who live in developing countries, try to adapt, behave and live life like the people living in the well-off countries, and sometimes they tend to forget or change their values and culture.

  1. Broadly defined, Asia comprises more than 60 percent or the world’s populations-a population that practises Buddhism, Confucianism, Hinduism, Islam, and numerous other religions. Thus, do you think it is possible to carry on a valid discussion of “Asian” values? Why or Why not?

Asian culture is already diverse by itself. Countries in Asia differ in many ways such as food and cultural practices that are mainly brought about by differences in religion. Countries in the Middle East such as Saudi Arabia is mainly inhabited by 20% of the Muslim population in the world. This religion forbids pork as food that is why Arabic cuisine mainly includes chicken, lamb, and seafood on their menu. This makes it different from Korean cuisine which mostly includes beef and pork on their menu. Despite all of these, the reason behind these differences is the same reason why common linkages between these countries exist. Religion is the reason why Asian subcultures differ but it is also the reason why they are alike. Asian Culture is known for its high regard for family. This extreme family orientation can be seen in most if not all Asian countries. The idea of staying under the supervision of parents is one example of a culture that is common in different Asian subcultures. Asians tend to be highly group-oriented people who place a strong emphasis on family connection as the major source of identity and protection against the hardships of life. This strong family orientation is mainly brought about by religion. In my opinion, it is possible to carry on a valid discussion on Asian culture. In general, culture can somehow be associated with a snake undergoing shedding process, it changes its outermost most part which is most likely exposed to external factors to give way for a better one but the core remains the same. Inarguably, no culture is an absolute. Culture is always changing yet it never changes in certain aspects. Indian call center workers might have to change their lives drastically such as speaking with an American accent, wearing American clothes, and dating boyfriends, but the fact remains that they are still Indian despite all of these. Globalization causes a hybrid culture to emerge but never a new culture.

  1. Consider the following statement: “Economic development and capitalism require a certain style of doing business in the twenty-first century. The sooner Asian cultures adapt the better. “Do you agree or disagree? Explain.

The combination of both economic development and capitalism is very important in the twenty first century business world. According to Cambridge Dictionary, economic development is the process in which an economy grows or changes and becomes more advanced, especially when both economic and social conditions are improved. Moreover, Merriam-Webster defined capitalism as an economic system characterized by private or corporate ownership of capital goods, by investments that are determined by private decision, and by prices, production, and the distribution of goods that are determined mainly by competition in a free market. It may be biased toward Western management practices that Asian is the one that needs to adapt better but it is true that a lot of global companies are studying the principle of Western business. Companies are introducing greater efficiency and new management techniques. A lot of Asian’s was seen in transferring to Western management principles during its crisis while the governments passed laws about greater transparency among companies and banks, U.S. and other Western Companies acquired bankrupt Asian companies and change how they run. However, no matter how fast the pace of change, Asian companies will always retain practices that make them unique and will achieve self sufficiency and prosperity if they ensure a higher standard of both economic development and capitalism.
