  1. Who is Aikido Kaiso (Founder)? Write about his life and accomplishments.

  2. Who are the descendants of Ueshiba Morihei Kaiso and what is their role in Aikido?

  3. What is reigi, and why is it important?

  4. What is the role of uke and of nage in training?

  5. What is kuzushi, and why is it important to training?

  6. What is zanshin, and why is it important to training?


4th Kyu

  1. What is Aikido?

  2. Write about your lineage in Aikido.

  3. Write about the meaning of sempai and kohai, and what it means to you.

  4. What is kata, and how does it fit in training?

  5. Write about the progression of kuzushi, tsukuri, kake.

  6. What qualities do you strive to develop in your training?


3rd Kyu

  1. Write about a few of the various styles of Aikdo. What style is this dojo?

  2. Write about the differences between Budo and Bujutsu.

  3. What is ma-ai, and why is it important to consider in training?

  4. Write about the responsibility of the student to the dojo, and the dojo to the student.

  5. Write about the history/development of Aikido.

  6. Fold a hakama correctly in 5 minutes.


2nd Kyu

  1. Write about the concepts of kokyu and kokyu ryoku.

  2. Write about the concept of musubi, and how it affects your training.

  3. Write about the relationship between and responsibilities of sempai and kohai.

  4. Write about zanshin in training and what it means to you.

  5. Write about the history/development of Hombu Dojo and the Aikikai.


1st Kyu

  1. Write about the ideas of Shu, Ha, Ri, and how they relate to your training.

  2. What is the role of uke in training and of nage training? What qualities are important for each?

  3. What is kansha, and how does it relate to training?

  4. Write about the various roles of dojo members (sensei, sempai, kohai) and how they interact with each other.

  5. Discuss training- what is important, how does one develop, etc.


Shodan

  1. What is Shodan?

  2. What is Aikido?

  3. Write about shoshin.

  4. What responsibilities do we, as practitioners of Aikido, have to the dojo, to each other, and to Aikido itself?


Nidan, Sandan, Yondan: An essay to submit to Aikido World Headquarters. Topic to be determined by the Chief Instructor.
