How should we remember the Mughals?

Islam

The official religion of the Mughal empire. Followers of Islam believe in the teachings of the Prophet Muhammed. Pilgrimage to Mecca (Hajj) is very important.

Persian

Art, language and ideas originating from Persia (modern day Iran).

Hinduism

A major religious belief in India during the Mughal Empire. Hindus worship many gods but the three most important are the trimurti (Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva).

Sikhism

A religion founded in the Punjab region of India in the 15th century. Sikhs believe in one god who guides and protects them.

Battle of Panipat

A decisive battle in 1526 when Babur defeated the forces of Ibrahim Lodhi to control northern India.

Administrative system

The way in which government is organised especially to collect taxes and ensure that laws are followed.

Marathas

A Hindu warrior group who were increasingly in conflict with the Mughal Empire.
