WORK ON WRITING AND CHECKING THIS ESSAY

  • Follow the directions to write the essay and evaluate your work according to the guidelines.
  • Use a colored pen to evaluate the essay.
  • Work on this whenever you are not at stations working on problems #1-10, or if you complete a station early.

Your dad wants to burn the trash. You see that there is an aerosol can in the trash, and you remove it. Your dad yells at you and tells you to put it back. You patiently point out the warning on the can: “DO NOT INCINERATE!”

  • Your dad wants to burn the trash. You see that there is an aerosol can in the trash, and you remove it. Your dad yells at you and tells you to put it back. You patiently point out the warning on the can: “DO NOT INCINERATE!”
  • He still doesn’t get it, so you even more patiently explain Gay-Lussac’s Law to him.
  • You fascinate him by explaining your answer using the Kinetic-Molecular Theory of Matter.

Write an essay that explains the danger of burning aerosol cans.

  • Answer in complete sentences, using proper grammar.
  • Describe Gay-Lussac’s Law in words, stating the variables and the constant.
  • State the mathematical expression and describe it as direct or indirect.
  • Explain it using the Kinetic Molecular Theory of Matter.
    • Use appropriate terms and concepts such as:
      • Particles
      • Temperature
      • Energy
      • Volume
      • Pressure
  • Describe how the law explains why an aerosol can should not be incinerated.

Put down your pencil and pick up a pen to evaluate your work.

  • Put a star at the top of the paper if you wrote in complete sentences and organized your essay in paragraph form.
  • Underline the Gas Law Statement. Gay-Lussac’s Law : as temp increases, pressure increases. As temp decreases, pressure decreases.
  • Put asterisks above the variables. pressure* and temperature*
  • Put a check beside the constant. volume
  • Underline the equation P/T = k or P1/T1=P2/T2 or P1T2=P2T1
  • Circle the word
  • direct

Put a dot above each item listed below.

  • Your explanation of Gay-Lussac’s Law using the kinetic theory should include:
    • Particles…gas is made up of particles in constant rapid random motion colliding with each other and container (pressure)
    • Temperature…is a measure of the kinetic energy of the particles
    • Higher temp means more energy/more collisions, higher pressure
    • To keep volume constant at higher temperature, the pressure (particle collisions/unit area) increases

Draw a square around the aerosol can explanation

  • Your explanation of how Gay-Lussac’s Law describes the danger of incinerating an aerosol can should include:
    • The can contains gas particles.
    • Higher temp means more energy/more collisions, higher pressure.
    • If volume is constant, as the temp increases, pressure increases until the container is too weak to hold…and EXPLODES

EVALUATE your work on a scale of 1-4

  • 4 I followed all directions to write a well-organized paragraph, and I answered all of the prompts accurately.
  • 3 I wrote a good paragraph, but I missed 2-3 of the required items OR I covered the material but did not write a good paragraph.
  • 2 I needed to respond more carefully and clearly to the prompts. My response could have been expressed more clearly, and some of my scientific answers were not accurate.
  • 1 I did not use proper grammar, and I did not answer the scientific questions thoroughly or accurately.
