Quia software tutorial

I have found this to be by far the best software to create tailor-made interactive activities for use with the interactive whiteboard or in a multimedia IT suite.

First, access the Internet and go to the following site:

Here you can firstly click on to “Get a 30-day free trial”. You will need to give your e-mail address for this and choose username and password.

You can then use this username and password to log in for the next month and if you like it, persuade your school to subscribe (cost is approx. £30 per year for 1 person).

Once you are in the “Instructor Zone”, click on “Activities”. You can then create a new activity from the following options:

  • Matching, flashcard, concentration or wordsearch (usually pairs e.g. English and FL equivalents or FL and pictures)

  • Challenge board ( a range of questions which get harder and for which students can gain increasing points is the activities get harder)

  • Cloze (a traditional gap filling exercise in the form of a paragraph, with option to include choice of answer)

  • Columns (students have too columns of words, ie one in FL and one in English and they have to draw lines to match words to their correct meanings)

  • Hangman (as the name suggests – good fun to use with the Interactive Whiteboard in front of the whole class)

  • Jumbled words (words, for example in a sentence with each jumbled up)

  • Ordered List (a list e.g. of sentences that must be put in correct order. Good for simple dialogues)

  • Picture Perfect (order a list of words to reveal a picture)

  • Pop Ups (sentences with a missing word, and a choice of answers appears in a pop-up list. Good for practising grammar points)

  • Rags to Riches (IT version of the “Who wants to be a millionaire” game)

  • Scavenger Hunt (list of comprehension questions and a list of websites from which students can find the answers)
