Analysis: reflective essay, comparing literary works - humorous writing; Writing: brief memoir, letter to the editor; Grammar: predicate nominatives and predicate adjectives
Week 7:

Analysis: persuasive writing, analytic and interpretive essays, comparing author’s works – author’s purposes; Writing: letters, persuasive essay, critique, to compare literary works; Grammar: degrees of adverbs & adjectives

Items Covered: Selections: Antigone; Reading Skill: summarizing, retelling to summarize, taking notes to summarize, evaluating a critic’s summaries and responses; Writing: expressive essay, persuasive essay; Grammar: participles and participial phrases, gerunds and gerund phrases
Week 14:

Topic: Further Reading presentations

Items Covered: Students will read and complete both of the following on a selected work:


  1. lead a group discussion on your book, called “Save the Last Word”

  2. present a 5-10 minute speech, in which you attempt to persuade your classmates to read your selection, called “Suggested Reading(s).”


Week 15:

Topic: Exploring Drama

Items Covered: Selections: Julius Caesar; Reading Skill: reading Shakespearean drama, using text aids, paraphrasing Shakespearean verse, analyzing imagery, reading between the lines, comparing/contrasting characters; Lit. Analysis: Shakespeare’s tragedies, blank verse, dramatic speeches, internal/external conflict, tragic hero; Writing: casting calls, character analysis, editorial, obituary; Grammar: clauses, noun clauses, adjective clauses

Week 16:

Topic: Themes in Literature: Heroes and Dreamers

Items Covered: Selections: from Places Left Unfinished at the Time of Creation, “Prometheus and the Beginnings of Humanity,” “The Orphan Boy and the Elk Dog,” “Suniata,” “An Epic of Old Mali;” Reading Skill: analyzing cultural context, generating cultural context questions prior to reading, using background knowledge to interpret cultural context; Lit. Analysis: themes in literature, myths, epic and epic heroes; Writing: times essay, myth, newspaper report; Grammar: simple and compound sentences, complex and compound-complex sentences
Week 17:
