The passage below is an excerpt from the beginning of Ian McEwan’s Atonement, a novel published in 2002. In this passage, thirteen-year-old Briony has introduced a play that she has written for a family gathering. Read the passage carefully. In a well organized essay, analyze the techniques McEwan employs in this scene to characterize Briony and Lola.
