Thank you for your interest in The Governor’s School for the Agricultural Sciences at Louisiana State University!

We are very pleased you are applying for the program. To assist you in completing this application, please review the timeline and checklist below for important dates and requirements. If you have questions about the application process, please feel free to call the program office at the number listed below.



  • Review this entire packet before proceeding with the application process. Be sure to carefully read the “Eligibility” and “Applicant Responsibilities and Understandings” on Page 2.




  • Notify guidance counselor/school administrator and teacher reference of intention to file application. Do this as soon as possible and well in advance of the application deadline. Discuss “pre” deadlines for completing work in order to send off packet in time. Scholars who are home schooled should contact the program office for specific instructions on who may complete the forms.




  • Select one science or agricultural science teacher as per the guidelines on the respective forms, pages 6 and 7, of this application, to serve as a reference. Fill out the information lines on the tops of the forms, and then give the form to the teacher. The teacher will complete the form and send it directly to your guidance counselor/school administrator to maintain confidentiality.




  • Fill out the information lines on the top of the Guidance Counselor/School Administrator Reference Form (pages 8 and 9) and give both pages to your guidance counselor/school administrator.




  • Complete the Personal Data Form.

    • Complete the information lines on page 3 of the application

    • Complete a resume of extracurricular activities, narrative statement, volunteer or service activities, and essay as detailed on page 4.

    • Staple your responses to the form.

    • Complete the Health and Safety form on page 5.

    • You and your parent/guardian should review and sign your respective sections on page 5.




  • Give the completed Personal Data Form to your guidance counselor/school administrator.




  • Keep this page and page 2 for your records.




  • Stay in communication with your guidance counselor/school administrator and teacher reference to make sure that the application is completed appropriately and sent off by the postmark deadline.




  • Submit application, postmarked no later than January 27, 2017, mailed by the applicant’s guidance counselor/school administrator.



ELIGIBILITY: No exceptions are made to these requirements.


  • GRADE LEVEL AT TIME OF APPLICATION DEADLINE: Current juniors only.

  • ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS: Scholars should have a 3.0 unweighted GPA and a minimum composite ACT score of a 22.

  • SCHOOL ENROLLMENT: Must currently attend a public, charter, or non-public secondary school or be scholars who are home schooled.

  • LOUISIANA RESIDENCY: The primary full-time residence of at least one parent or legal, court-appointed guardian of the applicant must be in Louisiana. Military dependents based in Louisiana are eligible.

  • COMMITMENT TO PROGRAM: If accepting an invitation to participate, the scholar must commit to being in residence for the full program, July 10-21, 2017. Trips home or other absences are not allowed. Formal training unrelated to the curriculum (e.g. music practice, dance practice, or athletic training regimens for individual or team competitions) cannot be accommodated in the program.

  • GROUNDS FOR DISQUALIFICATION OF APPLICATION: Ineligibility (see above); lateness; failure to send application to the correct office; incompleteness of the application (it must be submitted in its entirety and on time); plagiarism; or falsification of information on the application.


APPLICANT RESPONSIBILITES AND UNDERSTANDINGS

  • DO NOT WAIT UNTIL THE LAST WEEK TO COMPLETE THE APPLICATION.

  • DO NOT ADD UNSOLICITED REFERENCES, RECOMMENDATIONS, OR MATERIALS. Send only those requested. Do not add newspaper clippings, photographs, research papers, certificates or other unsolicited materials. Extraneous letters of recommendation other than the teacher reference and the counselor/school administrator’s recommendation and other unsolicited materials will be removed form applications. The only exception is the optional extra letter of reference allowed if the applicant opts to respond to the Topical Essay C1.

  • STRONGLY RECOMMENDED: The applicant/counselor/school administrator may include (DO NOT STAPLE) a SELF-ADDRESSED, STAMPED POSTCARD (NOT AN EMPTY ENVELOPE) with the words “The Governor’s School for the Agricultural Sciences at Louisiana State University application received” for the acknowledgement of the receipt of the application. If this has not been received three weeks after posting the application, call the program office at (225) 578-2081.

  • NOTIFICATION OF FINAL STATUS. Notification is by email by March 7, 2017, a first-class letter to the applicant’s home address will be sent after status notification. This information is not available in advance or over the internet or by telephone.

  • UNDERSTANDINGS. The Governor’s School for the Agricultural Sciences at Louisiana State University cannot provide individual assessments or grant appeals to the selection process. Furthermore, The Governor’s School for the Agricultural Sciences at Louisiana State University is not responsible for late, lost, and/or incorrectly


DEADLINE NOTICE & PROCEDURES

POSTMARK DEADLINE: January 27, 2017

The application must be completed according to the directions on page 8 and mailed by the applicant’s guidance counselor/school administrator, postmarked no later than January 27, 2017. Scholars who are home schooled should call the program office ((225) 578-2081) for instructions on who may complete the various parts of the application.


Applications postmarked after January 27, 2017 will be disqualified. It is the applicant’s responsibility to make sure the application has been completed according to directions and that is has been mailed in complete form and postmarked by the deadline. The Governor’s School for the Agricultural Sciences at Louisiana State University is not responsible for lost, incomplete or delayed applications, or those sent to an incorrect address.

The following three responses to items A, B, and C are required. Staple your work to this form. An application missing any part may be disqualified for incompleteness. These responses receive emphasis in the selection process.



  1. EXTRACURRICULAR BULLETED RESUME

  • Format. Resume format. 3 page maximum, typed, single- or double-spaced, letter quality font no smaller than 12 points. Your name should appear at the top of each page.

  • Instructions: Divide the resume into two parts.

    • In the first part, make a bulleted list of academic agriculture/science-related activities, such as independent research projects or special study projects, or competitions in which you have been involved in the past two to three years in your school, community, or personal pursuits. Identify your role in each. List awards and honors for science and/or agricultural science related achievements and the source, reason, and date of each.

    • In the second part of the resume, make a bulleted list of extracurricular/leadership activities, including sports, jobs, personal pursuits, etc.




  1. NARRATIVE STATEMENT

  • Format. Essay format. 2 pages maximum, typed, double-spaced, letter quality font no smaller than 12 points. Your name should appear at the top of each page. Title the essay “Narrative Statement.”

  • Instructions: Introduce yourself to the selection committee. Discuss why you wish to participate in The Governor’s School for the Agricultural Sciences at Louisiana State University. Be as specific as possible about why you are willing to spend four weeks of your summer to come to The Governor’s School for the Agricultural Sciences at Louisiana State University, and why you think the committee should choose you. You may include information about your background, your interests, your pastimes (academic and nonacademic) and any other aspects of your life that will aid the committee in understanding who you are and why you want to participate in The Governor’s School for the Agricultural Sciences at Louisiana State University.

The applicant selects the reference.
