For this assignment, write a 2-3 page response to either “Words that Wound” (pg 296) or “Amusing Ourselves to Death: Is The Onion Our Most Intelligent Newspaper?” (pg 341).
Your essay should include:


  1. brief summary of the essay in your intro (explained on p. 63)

A summary is a brief statement of major points. It should present only the main idea, not details. Your summary must:



  1. evaluative comments (explained on p. 65)

Link the reading to your own experiences. How does the reading relate to your own experiences? Can you recall other material your have read or events you have experienced that are related to the reading?

  • These paragraphs should contain topics sentences linking the ideas of the article to your person experiences.

  • The bodies of these paragraphs should contain examples from both the article and your life.




  1. analysis of the reading (explained on p. 66-7)

Comment on any aspect of the essay, such as the author’s fairness or accuracy, his or her method of presentation, the quality of the supporting evidence provided, or the intended audience. In analysis, you must ask critical questions of the text.

  • These paragraphs should contain topic sentences that include the title of the article and/or the author and a judgment about the article and/or its ideas.

  • The bodies of these paragraphs should explain why you feel how you do about the author’s ideas. Get specific.


Overall:

  • Edit carefully for fragments and run-ons.

  • Use Times New Roman, 12 point font, double space, remove extra space after paragraphs

  • Use a creative title, not the title of the assignment

  • Make sure each paragraph has a topic sentence.
