PROPOSED PROJECT NAME:

One-day Eco-Travel to a Local Scenic Spot:

The Haohe River in Nantong




SUMMARY / BRIEF DESCRIPTION ABOUT THE PROPOSED PROJECT

My tutor group, age: 17-18 years old

Divide the whole class into several groups, with 6-8 members in each group. Each group can be formed by students according to their willingness, and the rest will be allocated into groups by the teacher.

1.Self-dependant learning

Each student is required to log on websites of local traveling, or to visit libraries for geological and ecological information of local scenic spots. Meanwhile, information of tips for traveling, such as weather, clothing, safety and health in traveling and necessary articles like food and water should also be collected.

2.Cooperative Learning: All members of the group are required to put down in English the collected information, and they are required to conduct communication among groups so as to further complete the information list and draft the plans on traveling for the group.

3.Communication within the Class: Each group should recommend one member to deliver a speech on the traveling plans to the whole class. Each group should learn from each other and revise their plans, so as to form the final plans on traveling for the whole class.

4.The sharing should include pictures; or video clips if possible.






RATIONALE FOR THE PROJECT:

1.To cultivate the students’ concept on the harmonious relationship between humans and nature, educate the students to love nature, and activate the students’ awareness of environmental protection.

2.To enhance the students’ abilities of colleting, organizing, transmitting and processing information via the Internet and library.

3.To guide the students to combine the knowledge of this project with realistic life, and help them learn how to survive, cooperate and communicate.

4.To help the students practice the integrated language skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing), solve realistic problems, and learn how to put theory into learning.






EXPECTED CONTRIBUTION FROM ASIAN SCHOOLS/STUDENTS:

A. Demonstration of the Achievements

Before and after the traveling, teachers can organize communication, demonstration and competition around the following aspects, and select optimal design of the activity and well-organized English essays. After the communication and competition, outstanding students should be required to revise their essays, and be encouraged to make written proposals on the protection of eco-environment to local government, environmental protection administration and traveling administration.

1.The Best Route: Each group should be required to demonstrate in spoken English the best route from the school to the scenic spot and the best route within the scenic spot.

2.Eco-travel Tips: After the traveling, each student should be required to propose Tips for Travelers based on the ecological conditions of the scenic spot and the behaviors of the travelers. All the groups will communicate with each other with reference to “In order to protect the environment, we suggest that all the tourist Dos…,Don’ts…”.

3.Essay: All students should be required to compose an essay on their thoughts after the one-day traveling with reference to “Past, Present and Future”. Students should also be encouraged to compose a high-quality report on the ecological conditions of the scenic spot and to make reasonable proposals to local government and relevant administration, so as to promote the ecological environment.


B. Methods and Criteria for Evaluation

All students who have participated and composed the essay will be graded an A or B, so as to encourage them to participate the similar activities more and more. “Best Route”, “Best Tips for Travelers” and “Excellent Essays” can firstly be recommended by the group, and then be evaluated by students themselves. Teachers will work as the guiders and organizers here. Criteria for evaluation should cover the following five aspects:
