ESLR:

Reflective Communicators (Think, read, write, listen, speak well)

Standard:

Literary Response and Analysis 3.12 – Analyze the way in which a work of literature is related to

the themes and issues of its historical period. (Historical approach)

Description of Portfolio Piece:

This work sample is a notebook I put together my sophomore year. We were required to read a series of short stories and essays from several important time periods throughout American history. First, we had to read a brief history of each era—Colonial America, Reason and Revolution, and Romanticism, then outline the section. Then we were to read several short stories or essays from each period,

summarize them, and respond to them.

Rationale for Selection of Piece:

I selected this work sample because I am more proud of it than any other project that I completed in high school and it clearly demonstrates my strengths in reading and responding to what I read. I love English, and I think that is obvious from the work that I put into this project. I could have done a lot less work and still received a good grade, but the final product that I ended up with is something that

I still enjoy to look back at. My teacher’s comments were a great encouragement to me, especially when she told me that I “accomplished what [she] would love to see all [her] students succeed in…” and that I “did a fine job thinking and expressing myself.” The only thing I wish I had done differently on this project is start earlier so that I would not have had to rush through the last couple of stories. I learned a lot about how the history of an era truly influences the writings that come out of it, and I learned a lot about reading stories and thinking about them, trying to come up with ways that they tie together. I think that these skills will be incredibly helpful to me as I go on to college next year.Segerstrom Fundamental High School
