Leitidee

To deal adequately with the challenges of doing business in today’s globalized world, a sound knowledge of English is indispensable. In fact, with higher education becoming increasingly international English is also playing a key role in the academic world. Consequently, the FHS English Language Program takes a skills-focused approach designed to help students become successful communicators in business situations as well as in academic settings. Crucially, this systematic development of key language skills also prepares course participants for any internationally recognized external exams such as BEC Higher or IELTS.

  • ENG3 builds on the foundations laid in the first year and are designed to help students make the transition from “Upper-Intermediate” to “Advanced/Proficiency”. The course covers key areas of grammar needed to pass external exams, such as BEC Higher or IELTS. This module goes into Business Administration topics in depth, while creating links with the core FHS areas of study. The development of communication skills extends to hands on activities, in this case writing business reports. The listening part sharpens and hones the ability of course participants to identify information quickly in realistic business scenario, while essay writing provides key skills in academic writing.

Speaking


  • Use English fluently, accurately and effectively in a range of general and professional topics (specifically: Business in the World Today, Doing Business Online, Project Management and Human Resource Management).

  • Express ideas and opinions clearly, as well as present and respond to complex lines of reasoning convincingly.

  • Orally summarize demanding business-oriented texts and video clips.

Writing


  • 1) Write reports in various business scenarios by showing good grammatical correctness and convincing use of business phrases and terminology. Display a style suitable to the target reader and present the main points in a clear and well-structured manner.

  • 2) Write an essay based on the themes in ENG3 with sound academic ability by developing a hypothesis and coherently expressing explanations and opinions relevant to a text or article.

Reading


  • Understand long business and academic texts and summarize them orally.

  • Read and understand the details of business articles and reports where opinions, viewpoints and implications are discussed.

  • Use techniques to answer multiple choice type exam questions in any international exam.

Listening



  • Understand business discussions, reports and talks in detail.

  • Understand speech used in abstract and complex themes, even if the accent is unfamiliar.

  • Use techniques to successfully pass the listening part of any international exam.
