HSC (Advanced) English 2004 / 2005

The HSC (Advanced) English course is designed to assist students to become sophisticated users of English in order to enhance their personal, social and vocational lives. The course provides students who have a particular interest and ability in the subject with challenging learning experiences and opportunities to enjoy breadth and variety through the integration of the modes of reading, writing, speaking, listening, viewing and representing.

Course Requirements
In the HSC (Advanced) English course students analyse and evaluate texts, and the ways they are valued in their contexts.

Text Requirements

  • The close study of at least five different types of text, one drawn from each of the following categories:-

- Shakespearean drama

- Prose fiction

- Drama or film

- Poetry
- Non-fiction or media or multi-media texts

  • A wide range of additional related texts and textual forms

The course has two sections and the requirements listed above apply to both sections.

Section 1
Content common to the Standard and Advanced course where students analyse and explore texts and apply skills in synthesis.

The Area of Study is examined in the HSC by one 2-hour paper which is identical for both Standard and Advanced students, and which involves a reading section, a writing section and an essay section.

Section 2
Modules which emphasise particular aspects of shaping meaning and representation, questions of textual integrity, and ways in which texts are valued.

Three Electives (one chosen from each Module), which are unique to the Advanced course, are examined by a second two-hour paper in the HSC.

Study in the HSC course requires close study of particular texts, supported by students’ own wide reading. (BOS English Stage 6 Syllabus - Advanced p. 49-56)

The details of the HSC (Advanced) English course are elaborated more fully in the BOS Stage 6 Syllabus document which is available on the Board of Studies website: www.boardofstudies.nsw.edu.au This website is worth regular visits by both students and parents as it is constantly updated with resources, specimen examination questions, examiners’ reports, marking criteria and useful links to other sites.
