I-American Unit Final Essay Assignment

100 points Essay/Major Project Grade

How do race, family tradition, and/or culture affect identity for individuals living in America?
Your final essay will ask you write a 5 paragraph MIELCon essay (an introduction, three MIELCon body paragraphs, and a conclusion) that answers our guiding question for this unit. For this essay, you will be asked to choose three different characters from the texts we have read and come up with a common thesis that answers our guiding question.
It’s been a while since we read some of the texts from this unit, so before we begin writing, let’s take some time to refresh our memories!
THINK-PAIR-SHARE PRE-WRITING: Look back over the texts we have read and your I-American chart to brainstorm similarities in how race, family tradition, and/or culture affects identity for characters from the texts we have read.

Which three characters from which three texts would you like to write about for your essay?

I. PARAGRAPH ONE: INTRODUCTION. We will work on introduction writing later – after we have written your body paragraphs; for now, I would like you to just write your thesis statement which will eventually be placed as the last sentence of your introduction.
If you need more guidance in writing your thesis statement, feel free to use the following fill-in-the-blank templates:

By looking at Character #1 from “Text #1,” Character #2 from “Text #2,” and Character #3 from “Text #3,” it is apparent that minorities living in America often reject their family culture in order to identify themselves as Americans.

Character #1 from “Text #1,” Character #2 from “Text #2,” and Character #3 from “Text #3” identify positively with their cultural heritage.

Although Character #1 from “Text #1” and Character #2 from “Text #2” positively identify with their racial backgrounds, Character #3 from “Text #3” does not.

Character #1 from “Text #1,” Character #2 from “Text #2,” and Character #3 from “Text #3” are all teased because of their race which negatively affects their sense of racial identity.

While living in America, Character #1 from “Text #1,” Character #2 from “Text #2,” and Character #3 from “Text #3” continue to practice traditions that connect them to their cultural backgrounds.
