  1. Pleural diseases:

1- Knowledge and understanding:

  • Enumerate the different etiological factors, pathogenesis, clinical presentations, complications and possible treating modalities in pleurisy, pleural effusion, pleural fibrosis, pneumothorax and mesothelioma.

  • Mention the difference between transudate and exudate regarding causes of each, physical aspect, different chemical tests, bacteriological, cytological investigations that could be done to reach a final diagnosis of the cause.

2- Practical skills:

  • Elicit clinical signs of different presentations of pleural diseases.



3- Intellectual skills:

  • Formulate the relationship between pleural disease and general examination as signs of heart failure or generalized lymphadenopathy.

4- Transferable skills:

  • Retrieve evidence based guidelines for diagnosis of pleural effusion.




  1. Pneumonia and drug induced lung disease

1- Knowledge and understanding:

  • Define Pneumonia, know different classification, pathogenesis, clinical presentation, investigations and antibiotic choice according to presentation.

  • Know the severity grades of pneumonia and indication of hospitalization and ICU admission.

  • Enumerate different causes of non-infectious pneumonitis and haw to manage each condition.

  • Describe different types of reactions to different drugs and how to manage each condition properly.

2- Practical skills:

  • Perform accurate method of specimen collection for proper diagnosis.

3- Intellectual skills:

  • Modify initial empiric antibiotic therapy according to the results of investigations.

  • Decide how to manage drug induced lung diseases according to the reaction.

4- Transferable skills:

  • Retrieve evidence based guidelines for diagnosis, treatment and prevention of Pneumonia and drug induced lung diseases.

  1. Bronchial asthma and pulmonary embolism

1- Knowledge and understanding:

  • Define asthma, mention its epidemiology, risk factors, clinical presentations of its phenotypes pathogenesis, main pathological features, different investigations including pulmonary function characteristics, and recent treatment modalities including treatment of emergency attacks and maintenance treatment, stressing on inhaler therapy as the fastest and the safest option available.

  • Describe mechanism and risk factors of thrombosis, aetiology of different causes of embolization, clinical features of acute and chronic presentations, indications of different diagnostic techniques, complications, prophylaxis and long term management of pulmonary embolism.

  • Enumerate the indications of ICU admission for both bronchial asthma and pulmonary embolism.

2- Practical skills:

  • Elicit signs of respiratory distress.

3- Intellectual skills:

  • Suggest a short and long term strategy to manage asthma and pulmonary embolism.

4- Transferable skills:

  • Write a scientific report describing the nature of bronchial asthma and the patient’s needs in workplace.

  • Retrieve evidence based guidelines for management of bronchial asthma and pulmonary embolism.




  1. Interstitial pulmonary diseases and lungs in collagen vascular diseases

1- Knowledge and understanding:

  • Describe different etiological factors for idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis and hypersensitivity pneumonitis, epidemiology, pathogenesis, clinical features, different investigations including pulmonary function, CT picture, differential diagnosis and possible treatment options.

  • Enumerate different collagen diseases that cause pulmonary manifestations and describe the pattern of its presentation and who to investigate and treat accordingly.

2- Practical skills:

  • Elicit general and local signs of interstitial pulmonary fibrosis.

3- Intellectual skills:

  • Write a report to describe the degree of pulmonary function loss to be evaluated by evaluated by the employee to decrease work load.




  1. Respiratory failure and occupational lung diseases.

1- Knowledge and understanding:

  • Define respiratory failure, classify it and mention the clinical and blood gases characteristics of each type, most common causes, pathogenesis, and management of each type including the appropriate methods of Oxygen delivery, prevention of Oxygen toxicity and indications of ICU admission.

  • Describe different types of occupational lung diseases, etiological factors, pathogenesis, epidemiology, clinical features, lung function characteristics, complications and methods of prevention.

2- Practical skills:

  • Use different instruments of Oxygen delivery and indications of each method.

3- Intellectual skills:

  • Decide when to refer the patient with respiratory failure to ICU.

  • Criticize the measures taken in factories and mining against dust inhalation to prevent occupational lung diseases.

4- Transferable skills:

  • Write a scientific report for patients with chronic respiratory failure recommending domiciliary oxygen use.

  • Write a report describing the disability grade for occupational lung diseases workers to receive the proper compensation from their employers.
