Why teach computer science? What are the purposes goals, justifications and reasons for teaching computer science? How can current computer science teaching plans and practices be justified? What should be the reasons for teaching computer science if it is to be taught at all?

You need to develop your views on the purpose of computer science Education and the contribution that you believe it makes to pupils to schools and society in general.

In order to articulate a rationale for computer science education, and justify the place of the subject in the curriculum you will first need to examine the nature of the subject itself and reflect on how this informs your personal view.

You then need to consider your subject’s history and its emergence and development as a school subject. What reforms have taken place and what ideas and beliefs have promoted them? Finally what is the present shape of the National Curriculum and the program of study for computer science? Does the program of study fulfil the aims and purposes of computer science education proposed by scholars and professionals? How are your own views informed by these? Does the Programme of Study for your subject help to promote the aims of the Curriculum as a whole?



Set out your arguments in response to the question 'Why Teach computer science?' To support your views you should refer to your study notes and associated readings, your responses to the course activities and to notes you make on activities in your school experience. In addition, where appropriate, you should draw on official documentation such as the National Curriculum (NC) and documentation from the Department for Education (DFE), Office for Standards in Education (OfSTED) and the Qualifications, Curriculum and Development Authority (QCDA).

This argument will convey a huge personal passion for computer science using a variety of personal experiences, current affairs and a range of up to date and relevant literature. Sources will be linked together to form coherent sophisticated points. The questions listed in the guidance will all be covered and often linked together where appropriate. Additional original questions will also be explored. The arguments will cover why computer science is important personally for you, your academic experiences of the subject linked to developments in the National Curriculum and references to relevant materials to show how important it is for young people to engage with computer science in a meaningful way. Actual topics will be given to demonstrate this. The work will give a detailed account of current issues in school computer science and ways forward for the future.

This argument will convey a personal passion for computer science using aspects of personal experiences, current affairs and some up to date and relevant literature. Sources will often be linked together to form coherent points. The vast majority of questions listed in the guidance will be covered. The arguments will cover; why computer science is important personally for you, your academic experiences of the subject and developments in the Nations Curriculum as well as references to relevant materials to show how important it is for young people to engage with computer science in a meaningful way. The work will give an indication of some current issues in school computer science and ways forward for the future. In some instances areas may be missing from the work but compensated for by good detail in others.

The essay will fail if the reader is not convinced of the worth of computer science in the schools curriculum. The work could also be missing key elements by not answering the questions given. The work may also not show coherent understanding by joining relevant points together to form an argument. There may be a limited number of sources used. Reference to relevant literature may be limited or poorly referenced.
