NATIONAL SERVICE SCHEME

A REPORT ON NSS ACTIVITIES FOR THE YEAR 2013-2014

NSS VOLUNTEERS STRENGTH
The NSS Volunteers’ strength allocated` for the year 2013-2014 is 56,000 and the actual enrolment is 60,100 out of which 42,600 are male and the remaining 17,500 are female volunteers (SC: 9,656, ST: 5,312 & OBC: 23,235).
FREE EYE SCREENING TESTS FOR ALL THE EMPLOYEES OF ANDHRA UNIVERSITY
The NSS Cell of Andhra University in collaboration with Non-Teaching Employees Union of A.U. and Vasan Eye Care conducted “Free Eye screening tests for all the employees of Andhra University” on 15th & 16th April, 2013. Nearly 400 employees were benefited in this programme and in some cases they were referred to Eye Hospital for further investigation and in some cases they were suggested for surgery.
NSS PROGRAMME OFFICER’S MEETING
The Visakhapatnam district level NSS Programme Officer’s Meeting was held on 22.04.2013 at NSS Conference Hall, A.U. All the Programme Officers attended and the NSS Official from State Government Sri P. Ramachandra Rao reviewed the NSS activities. The Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor Prof. G.S.N Raju attended as Chief Guest and lauded the services of NSS in community development. Further, he suggested the participants to take up Environmental Conservative activities for protection of the natural resources.
AWARENESS ON HEALTH HAZARDS DUE TO SMOKING & DRUGS
NSS Cell of Andhra University organized one-day workshop on Awareness on Health Hazards due to Smoking & Drugs on 23.04.2013 at NSS Cell, Andhra University. Nearly 150 employees and local NSS Programme Officers along with NSS volunteers participated in this workshop in a befitting manner. Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor, Prof. G.S.N. Raju inaugurated the workshop and he explained in detail about the health hazards due to smoking and drugs. The Keynote speaker Dr. Umaraj cautioned the society and in particular the youth about ill effects of drug addiction.

OBSERVANCE OF VEHICLE FREE CAMPUS DAY
Andhra University administration in association with NSS Cell observed the last working day of every month as the day of “Vehicle Free Campus. This programme was started on 30th April of 2013 as Vehicle Free Campus Day and it is observed on 28th of every month. The Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police and the Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor of Andhra University adopted and implemented this Environmental Protection Programme to create awareness on the importance of conservation of natural resources and to provide clean and safe environment to the future generations and pave the way for sustainable development. All officials and staff of the University and also public have kept their vehicles at outside the campus and walked into the campus. This campaign was well received by the citizens of Visakhapatnam and also extended their support for this noble activity.
SWAMY VIVEKANANDA’S 150TH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS
As part of Swamy Vivekananda’s 150th Birthday celebrations, the NSS Units of Andhra University deputed NSS volunteers to take part in number of inspirational and developmental activities to mark the occasion. The local leaders, Principals of the colleges garlanded the Statues of Swamy Vivekananda and recalled the services extended to youth. In addition to this, rallies were also organised, cultural programmes were performed by NSS volunteers and highlighted Swamy Vivekananda’s contribution to the society. Further, the NSS volunteers of Andhra University area donated blood and distributed fruits to the poor in a befitting manner.
WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY
World Environment Day is observed on June 5 every year to promote awareness on the importance of preserving our biodiversity, and also to identify problems related to the environment and ways to take corrective action. The 2013 theme for World Environment Day is Think.Eat.Save. World Environment Day aims at addressing environmental challenges that include climate change, global warming, disasters and conflicts, harmful substances, environmental governance, ecosystem management and resource efficiency.
World Environment Day has received tremendous support from the public and governments through various awareness campaigns such as beach clean-ups, organizing concerts, exhibits, film festivals, community events and to spread the message, which is to improve the quality of life of all living beings on this planet without harming nature. All the activities of World Environment Day are carried out to spread eco-awareness and increase green footprint. All the NSS Units under Andhra University jurisdiction observed in a befitting manner.
WORLD BLOOD DONORS’ DAY
World Blood Donor’s Day is observed on 14th June every year. This year also all the NSS Units under Andhra University organised Blood Donation Camps, Blood Grouping tests, and public awareness meetings, in their respective colleges and adopted villages.

Andhra University in association with Symbiosis Technologies, Visakhapatnam conducted a meeting at NSS Cell of Andhra University to create awareness programme on Blood Donor Motivation for all the NSS Units in Visakhapatnam. Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor, Prof. G.S.N.Raju addressed the gathering and motivated the participants to donate blood frequently.


OLYMPIC DAY RUN-2013
Visakhapatnam District Olympic Association organised Olympic Day Run-2013 on 23.06.2013 to achieve Guinness World Record, held from A.U. Engineering College Grounds to R.K. Beach, Visakhapatnam with a stretch of 5 km distance. About 700 NSS volunteers participated in this prestigious programme. The Hon’ble Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, Shri N Kiran Kumar Reddy has inaugurated the Run. All the district officials, M.P.s, M.L.As and the Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor, Prof. G.S.N. Raju, Registrar Prof. K. Rama Mohana Rao of Andhra University were also present.
INTERNATIONAL DRUG ABUSE DAY
Andhra University NSS Cell in association with Green valley Foundation, Visakhapatnam organised “International Drug Abuse Day” on 26.06.2013. About 400 NSS volunteers from various colleges of Visakhapatnam city participated in a massive rally started from Kali Matha Temple to VUDA Park. All the NSS Units under Andhra University area observed this day and participated in awareness rallies organized at their respective colleges.
PARTICIPATION OF VOLUNTEERS NSS MEGA CAMP-2013 AT BANGALORE
The Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, Govt. of India in association with the NSS Regional Centre, Bangalore (Karnataka) organized a 12 day NSS Mega Camp-2013 at NSS Bhavan, Bangalore University, Bangalore from 29.06.2013 to 10.07.2013. In this context, 3 male and 3 female NSS volunteers and Team Leader Mr. P.V. Ramana Kumar participated in this Camp.

WORKSHOP ON HUMAN RIGHTS EDUCATION PROJECT
International Association for Religious Freedom (IARF) and NSS Cell of Andhra University jointly organized a 2-day Workshop on “Human Rights Education project” for NSS Programme Officers on 4th & 5th July, 2013 at NSS Conference Hall, Andhra University, Visakhapatnam. Nearly 100 Programme Officers and 50 NSS volunteers 25 resources persons participated in this workshop. The participants learnt various aspects of Human Rights Violdation, Protective measures through Acts, etc.
MOTHER THERESA’S BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS
The NSS Cell of Andhra University organised Mother Theresa Birthday celebrations on 27.08.2013 at NSS Cell, A.U. All the Programme Officers of Visakhapatnam attended the celebrations. The Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor Prof. G.S.N. Raju addressed the gathering.
NATIONAL INTEGRATION DAY CELEBRATIONS
Andhra University NSS Cell organised the National Integration Day Celebrations on 31.10.2013 at NSS Conference Hall, Andhra University. Prof. E.A. Narayana, Rector of A.U. attended as Chief Guest and gave a valuable message to the NSS volunteers. Dr. P. Premanandam, Head of the Dept. of Politics & Public Administration, A.U. has also attended and highlighted the need for National Integration.
NSS PRE-REPUBLIC DAY PARADE CAMP-2013
Twelve NSS volunteers of Andhra University participated in the Pre-Republic Day Parade Camp at Kadi Sarva Viswa Vidyalaya, Gandhinagar (Gujarat) from 6th to 15th November, 2013. The details are hereunder.

INTER-COLLEGIATE NSS MEGA CAMP AT AU CAMPUS
Andhra University NSS Cell organized 7 days Inter-Collegiate NSS Mega Camp at A.U. Campus from 12th to 18th August, 2013. About 320 NSS volunteers of local colleges participated in this camp.
OBSERVANCE OF INTERNATIONAL COASTAL CLEANUP DAY
The Headquarters, Eastern Naval Command in association with NSS Cell of Andhra University organised International Coastal Cleanup Day on 21.09.2013. Nearly 400 NSS volunteers participated in a cleanup drive in the beach areas from Naval Coast Battery to Rushikonda. The volunteers collected huge quantity of garbage and later it was disposed.
NSS DAY CELEBRATIONS
The NSS Cell of A.U. organised NSS Day celebrations at A.U. Campus on 22.09.2013 in a befitting manner. In this context, many competitions were conducted i.e., essay writing, elocution, poster painting, and cultural programmes. Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor of A.U., Prof. G.S.N. Raju appreciated the NSS volunteers for yeoman services rendered by them. Ms. E.P.S. Bhagyalakshmi, District Programme Officer, Dr. S. Haranath, NSS PO., Smt. T. Seshulatha NSS PO and Dr. V.N. Murthy, Ex-DPO were present.
STATE LEVEL NSS AWARDS
The Andhra University NSS Cell received the State level NSS Awards for the year 2012-13 at Palamuru University, Mahaboobnagar.

ELDERS DAY

The NSS volunteers observed Elders Day on 1st October. As part of this, the volunteers visited Old-Age Homes, whey they distributed fruits to the elders.


GANDHIJI JAYANTHI
The local NSS volunteers participated in peace rallies, organized in connection with Gandhiji Jayanthi on October 2nd. They took pledge on National Integration and Communal Harmony as mark of Gandhi Jayanthi.
CAPACITY BUILDING PROGRAMME ON SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP
The Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Youth Development, Sriperumbudur, Chennai organised a 7-day training programme on Capacity Building Training Programme on Social Entrepreneurship at RGNIYD, Sriperumbudur, Chennai from 11th to 17th November, 2013. INDIRA GANDHI NSS AWARDS

Dr. N.A.D. Pal, Programme Coordinator, NSS, Andhra University received the Indira Gandhi NSS Award for Best Programme Coordinator for the year 2012-13 (Letter of Appreciation) at New Delhi on 19.11.2013 by the Hon’ble President of India, Dr. Pranab Mukherjee.


Dr. N. Kiran Chandra, NSS Programme Officer of West Godavari received the prestigious Indira Gandhi NSS Award for Best Programme Officer the year 2012-13 at New Delhi on 19.11.2013 by the Hon’ble President of India, Dr. Pranab Mukherjee.

WALK FOR HEALTH


On 30th November, 2013 “Walk for Health” organized by VISAKHA HRIDAY–SHAN in association with NSS Cell, Andhra University to promote public awareness about physical activity from Kaali Matha Temple, Beach road to VUDA Park, Visakhapatnam. About 400 NSS volunteers (both Male & Female) and NSS Programme Officers participated in this Rally in a befitting manner.
OBSERVANCE OF World AIDS Day
On 1st December, 2013 was observed as World AIDS Day. All the NSS volunteers of Andhra University area were involved in Rallies parading with their College banners. In Visakhapatnam, 1,700 NSS volunteers involved in a Massive Rally started from VUDA building to Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Auditorium, College of Engineering, Andhra University. Eminent persons participated in the meeting. Prof. G.S.N. Raju, Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor of Andhra University attended as the Chief Guest. In this connection, local NGOs, NCC, DM&HO, DLO, Lions Club, Nursing students took part in this programme.
NSS MEGA CAMP-2013 AT ASSAM
The Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, Govt. of India in association with the NSS Regional Centre, Guwahati organized a 12 day NSS Mega Camp – 2013 at Tejpur Central University, Tejpur (Assam) from 13th to 24th December, 2013. Four NSS volunteers participated from Andhra University in this National level Mega Event.

OBSERVANCE OF NATIONAL VOTERS DAY
District Level National Voters Day was observed on 25.01.2014 at Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Assembly Hall, Andhra University, Visakhapatnam. As part of this a massive rally with 500 NSS volunteers was organized and a function at Gandhi Statue Opp. to GVMC Main Office, Near RTC Complex, Visakhapatnam was also held. All NSS Units of Andhra University jurisdiction observed this programme in a befitting manner by highlighting the importance of having Voter Card.
Republic Day Parade Camp at New Delhi
Nineteen NSS volunteers were selected from the state of Andhra Pradesh, out of which 6 volunteers from Andhra University area participated in the Republic Day Parade Camp held from 1st to 31st January, 2013 at New Delhi.

TOT ON SOCIAL HARMONY AND HUMAN RIGHTS AT A.U. CAMPUS
The Rajiv Gandhi National Institute of Youth Development (RGNIYD), Sriperumbdur, Tamil Nadu in collaboration with NSS Regional Centre, Hyderabad and NSS Cell of Andhra University organized a Training of Trainers on Social Harmony and Human Rights for NSS Programme officers at Andhra University, Visakhapatnam from 25th to 29th November, 2013. About 20 NSS Programme Officers participated in this programme from different colleges of Andhra University and were trained in different aspects contests of Human Rights Violation / Legal Provisions, etc.
XVIII NATIONAL YOUTH FESTIVAL - 2014 AT LUDHIANA (PUNJAB)
5 NSS volunteers and 1 Programme Officer participated in the XVIII National Youth Festival-2014 held at Ludhina (Punjab) from 12th to 16th January, 2013.

ORGANISING THE PRESTIGIOUS INTER-STATE YOUTH EXCHANGE & HOME STAY PROGRAMME AT A.U. CAMPUS
The Rajiv Gandhi National Institute of Youth Development (RGNIYD), Sriperumbudur and NSS Regional Centre, Hyderabad in collaboration with NSS Cell of Andhra University organized an Inter-State Youth Exchange & Home Stay Programme at Andhra University Campus, Visakhapatnam from 22nd to 31st January, 2014. About 120 NSS volunteers from 8 different states participated in this programme. The Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor, Prof. G.S.N. Raju, the Rector, Prof. E.A. Narayana, and the Registrar, Prof. K. Rama Mohana Rao of Andhra University, Shri R.Gokulakrishnan, Head, NSS Regional Centre, Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sport, Govt. of India, Hyderabad and Sri P. Ramachandra Rao, State Liaison Officer, State NSS Cell, Govt. of Andhra Pradesh, Hyderabad were present.
NSS YOUTH FESTIVALS
Organised 560 Unit level, 24 Zonal level, 4 District level and 1 University level NSS Youth Festivals were organized in the month of January & February, 2014.
CONSULTATION PROGRAMME ON SAARC YOUTH CHARTER
Rajiv Gandhi National Institute of Youth Development (RGNIYD) and UNFPA jointly organized a consultation workshop to finalize the SAARC Youth Charter from 3rd to 4th February, 2014 at RGNIYD Campus, Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu. In this regard, Mr. M. Rajiv Tagore, NSS volunteer of College of Engineering, Andhra University participated in the Consultation programme.

WORKSHOP ON LEGAL AWARENESS
Andhra University NSS Cell organized a one day workshop on Legal Awareness at NSS Conference Hall, A.U. on 11.02.2014. In this connection, Sri R. Srinivasa Rao, Advocate & Addl. Public Prosecutor, V Addl. District & Sessions Judge Court, Visakhapatnam attended as Chief Guest. Prof. D. Suryaprakash Rao, Dean Faculty of Law, A.U., Sri S. Appala Raju, Legal Metrology Inspector, Vizag, Sri P. Ramesh, Chairman, Presidency Degree College, Vizag, Smt. D. Sudha Rani, Principal, Presidency Degree College, Vizag were present.
LAUNCHING OF NATIONAL YOUTH POLICY-2014 AND RAJIV GANDHI KHEL ABHIYAN
As per the direction of the Govt. of India, National Youth Policy launched on 21.02.2014 by the Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor, Prof. G.S.N. Raju at Andhra University Campus. In this connection, the NSS Cell of Andhra University organized rallies and public meetings with placard, banners, Slogans, Jingles, Posters, distribution of leaflets & pamphlets on this day in a befitting manner. Nearly 282 NSS volunteers participated in this programme. Prof. E.A. Narayana, Rector, Prof. K. Rama Mohana Rao, Registrar of A.U. were present participated in this programme.
TOT ON YOUTH LEADERSHIP AND PERSONALITY DEVELOPMENT

Degree & PG College, Visakhapatnam participated in three days Training of Trainers Programme on Youth Leadership and Personality Development at Rajiv Gandhi National Institute of Youth Development, Sriperumbur, Chennai from 27th to 29 March 2014.
TELUGU BASHA DINOSTHAVAM
The NSS volunteers and Programme Officers of local NSS Units observed Telugu Basha Dinosthavam at Andhra University. The NSS volunteers and NSS Programme Officers listened attentatively the speeches by famous Telugu Poets on this occasion.

Road formation
A total of nearly 80 kms of Roads was formed by all the NSS volunteers of Andhra University in their regular and special camping activities.

HIV/AIDS Programme
300 HIV/AIDS awareness programmes were conducted, and nearly 52,300 people benefited through this awareness programme.
Water Harvesting Pits
In the Special Camping programmes, 648 water harvesting pits were dug by the volunteers.
Pulse Polio Immunisation Programme
46,650 volunteers involved in the Pulse Polio Immunization programme for the year 2013-14
Illiterates made literates
70,120 illiterates made literates under Regular and Special Camping programmes under A.U. jurisdiction.

Health Awareness Campaign

33,000 people are benefited in health awareness campaigns undertaken by the NSS volunteers while conducting Regular and Special Camping programmes.


Repair of Check Dams
7 check dams are repaired by the volunteers while conducting Special Camping Programmes.
