“A good role model is an idol to society.” In the famous myth, Antigone, Antigone is a great role model for women but she isn’t a true feminist. Antigone is a great role model for women because she stands up to Creon and she is confident. Antigone is not an early feminist because she is only concerned about her death and emotions. Antigone is a true example of a great role model but no an early feminist.
One reason Antigone is a great role model for women is because she stands up to Creon, a powerful king. Antigone tells her sister, Ismene, about her plan to bury her brother, Polynices. “Creon isn’t strong enough to stand in my way” (p. 1023, Sophocles). Creon banned anyone from burying Polynices because he brought war on to Thebes; Antigone knew this was wrong so she stood up for what she believed in. Also when Creon convicts her of the crime Antigone tells him off. “This talking is a great weariness: your words are distasteful to me…”(p. 1036, Sophocles). Antigone stood up to Creon to prove that she was a true role model.
Antigone is a great role model, not only because she stood up to Creon but also she is very confident. When Antigone is brought to Creon after burying Polynices he asks her if she committed the crime. Antigone’s answer is very confident. “I do, I deny nothing” (p 1035, Sophocles). This really shows her outstanding confidence. Also when Ismene begs to be killed along with Antigone; Antigone is the first one to tell her no. “You shall not less my death by sharing it” (p. 1038, Sophocles). Antigone is quite confident, this is why she is a great role model for women.
Antigone is an amazing role model for women. Some people may think she is an early feminist, but she isn’t. Antigone isn’t an early feminist because she is wrapped up in her own emotions. Women back then were there to do a couple things. They were to cook, clean and have babies. Antigone on the other hand wouldn’t stand for being the ordinary women. She was not afraid to do what was right in her own mind. “He is my brother. And he is your brother too” (p. 1023, Sophocles). True feminists want equal rights for all women, Antigone just wants equal rights for herself, she is swept up in her own emotions. When Creon calls her out for doing the crime she isn’t scared to be proud of her actions, it’s all about her. She isn’t a true feminist because she is only wrapped up in her own emotions.
Lastly, Antigone is not an early feminist because she is only concerned about her own death. In scene two when Creon tells Antigone she is going to die she takes full responsibility for her action. “I belong to death” (p. 1039, Sophocles) On the other hand, a true feminist would fight back but Antigone just took Creon’s punishment. Also Antigone is only concerned for her death because in the end Antigone kills herself. “She had made a noose of her fine linen veil and hanged herself” (p. 1058, Sophocles). A true feminist wouldn’t let death take her but Antigone did. That is why Antigone wasn’t an early Feminist.
Antigone was a true role model for women, She was confident and she stood up to Creon. All women should look up to Antigone she was a good person. However, Antigone is not an early feminist, she is only concerned about her death and her emotions. Real feminists wouldn’t be concerned about just themselves, but Antigone was.
