2014 AIAA Hampton Roads Section Middle School Essay Contest
Welcome to the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) Hampton Roads Section (HRS) Middle School Essay Contest. This contest is open to all middle school students (defined as grades 6-8) in the Hampton Roads Section of AIAA.


Three (3) prizes will be awarded to the top essays submitted. The author of the first (1st) place essay will receive a check for $250. The author of the second (2nd) place essay will receive a check for $150. The author of the third (3rd) place essay will receive a check for $50. All winners (and their parents/guardians) will be invited to the AIAA HRS Annual Awards Dinner, held in May.

Additionally, the top 7th and 8th grade entries will be submitted to the AIAA Space Systems Technical Committee (SSTC) and will compete against the top entries from other AIAA sections around the country. The national winner for each grade will receive $100 (with an additional $250 for their science classroom) and have their essay published.

  1. Students must currently be in the 6th, 7th or 8th grade (or equivalent)

  2. Students should fill out all of the information above

  3. Students will write a 500-1000 word essay on the subject below (double-spaced, 12-point font preferred)

  4. Essays will be judged on originality/creativity, logic, realism and quality/clarity.

  5. A parent or legal guardian must read, acknowledge and sign the special notes section below.

  6. Submissions must be received by 5:00 pm, March 14th, 2014.

  7. All decisions of AIAA HRS are final
