Independent Reading Assignment

For each of the IRA assignments, you must choose from the list provided for each style of book. REMEMBER TO CITE ANY AND ALL EVIDENCE FROM YOUR NOVELS/READINGS- EVEN PARAPHRASES. Failure to cite will cost you anywhere between 5 points- 20 points depending on severity of the issue.


Remember to DO THE WORK YOURSELF- copying from Sparknotes or other online analysis sites will result in a 0 and a detention.
Book 1: Due October 14; Early Submission: October 7

Coming of Age novel.


Assignment Choices:
Diary Entries: Create a diary for the main character. The diary should stay true to the characterization developed within the novel. For each entry, provide information about significant events the protagonist has to deal with and the understandings the main character is developing. You must have a minimum of 5 diary entries- each about 400 words that cover events from throughout the entire novel, demonstrating the overall character growth of the protagonist.
AP style prompt: write a 2-3 page essay (DS) for your novel. I will give you feedback in terms of the essay, but your score will be based on fully responding to the prompt.. The prompts can be found online. You MUST choose one off the list- you can not just make one up. 
Critic’s Review Write a 2 page (DS) critic’s review of the novel. Begin with an introduction that briefly summarizes the novel, and then provide paragraphs that critique the character development, plot development, and a style aspect. Do not merely summarize each category, but rather evaluate HOW WELL the author did when creating the characters/plot/style.
Persuasive Essay: Write a five paragraph persuasive essay that argues the novel should be a required reading in high school. Must be between 750-1200 words. Don’t just summarize the novel.


Book 2: Due November 12; Early Submission: November 5

Biography- book must be a biography, autobiography, or memoir of someone who interests you.


Assignment Choices:

Persuasive Essay: Write a five paragraph persuasive essay that argues the biography should be a required reading in high school. Must be between 750-1200 words.
Poetry: write 3 event poems for significant events within the biography. Then write a poem to represent the setting, a poem to represent the theme/message, and a poem to represent the overall growth of the character. Each of the 6 poems should include details and specifics from the biography.
Expository Essay: Write an essay answering the following prompt: which event/situation, or possibly a string of events, was most significant to the character, and why. Must be between 750-1200 words.
Personal Review Write a 2 page (DS) review of the biography. Begin with an introduction that briefly summarizes the person’s life/contribution, and then pick 3 significant sections of the novel, and write body paragraphs that focus on your personal reaction to events from each section. Then provide a conclusion
Book 3: Due December 16 ; Early Submission December 9

AP book- choose one off of the AP book list under Documents on my website.


Assignment Choices:

Movie soundtrack. There must be a minimum of 6 songs. For each song there must be a paragraph long explanation of what “scene” the music would play, and why it fits (the lyrics, the mood of the music, the tone, etc). You will turn in the explanation document and either a burned disc with the songs, or the lyrics for the songs. The songs must all be school appropriate.
